New Music Right Now Providence, RI sound Brown Bird - Fingers to the Bone THE CLASS OF 2012 - BROWN BIRD's reputation proceeds them when it comes to New England folk music today. They've been stalwarts in the Portland, ME and Providence, RI scenes since David Lamb switched coasts in 2005, with a [...]

I wasn't originally planning on doing a show this evening, but decided to take my normal spot behind the microphone anyway. So the playlist didn't begin coming together until the evening of. There was no theme, it was all variety; folk to electronic to noise rock. If you missed it, here's the list: "The Crystal Cat" by Dan Deacon by Spiderman Of The Rings "A Dark God Heart" by Sleep Party People off We Were Drifting On A Sad Song [...]

It finally happened. Winter arrived. Snow fell and we woke up this past Sunday with about three inches of the stuff. I'm glad it didn't arrive earlier, as Friday saw me at KSVR for a four hour stint of music. The first two hours flirted with folk music and the latter half was full-on garage rock, garage pop and psychedelic pop. Much of the 10 to midnight show came courtesy Finest Kiss , who posted some great 2011 lists. Taking [...]

11. William Elliot Whitmore-Field Songs : Songs about working and struggling and grasping to the only piece of fucking dirt that yours and some SOB trying to cheat you out of it. Thanks WEW. I'm taking bullshit handyman work over the winter just so I can afford to eat Burger King and drink a couple of Miller High Lifes every once in a while, so I'm a disciple of these songs. I wonder what the farmers in Iowa do in the wintertime to survive. Is the suicide rate higher then? He's singing about [...]

With probably the longest entry of 2011 we give the floor to regular MM contributor and top ten compiler...Dr Roddy. Well it seems to be that time of year again. I always spend 340 days looking forward to doing this and 25 agonising over it. This year especially though, as I think there has been a bumper harvest of great songs. When I looked at my Top Ten playlist (with over 100 songs in it) I just thought one thing: bugger! I got there in the end though. There have been certain parties that have tried [...]

For the second of our 'guest' top ten posts we are pleased to welcome the finger-choppin' Banner to the roster with his first contribution to the end of year best of lists. " It's been a great year musically and especially as this year I became a dad. I'd like to thank Doctor Roddy and Chris T Popper for their steady supply of CDs this year and especially for little Max's mega mix from which I've selected some of my top ten tunes. I would like to have written a bit more about the songs but unfortunately I [...]

Pine trees and icicles and carolers - check. But can we please just talk for a moment about how it was -2 degrees the other night in Colorado? TWO BELOW, with howling winds. I like the beer , but man alive that makes for some cold sleeping. All the golden loveliness of autumn is gone, and in its place we have this icy, silent cocoon all around us, luminescent and silvery-blue. Perhaps I just have to survive these next two weeks of school, and maybe go on a little cookie-baking binge, and [...]

You wouldn't think that groovy would ever be a proper way to describe a record by a folk group but after dozens and dozens of listens to Brown Bird's Salt For Salt I can't think of a better one word description. Lately I've been listening to a shit ton of these type bands and the biggest progression folk groups have made over the years is the implementation of percussion. Brown Bird does it very simply, you can check out the bass drum work in this video . Brown Bird is a Rhode Island based duo [...]

Talk about serendipitous. I had never heard of Brown Bird prior to TDBG's post on the decline of the word soul. One of our readers dropped a link in to a video by Brown Bird that piqued my interest. The very next day The Low Anthem made mention of them on their Facebook page which led me to emusic to download their latest effort, Salt for Salt. Brown Bird is a duo from Rhode Island, hence The Low Anthem connection, consisting of David Lamb and MorganEve Swain. Much like The Low Anthem their music is rooted [...]

I've been in this alt/country/folk mood, likely due to the season and the fact that I now live in a seasonal place- I'm not sure what it is, maybe something primitive about the sound of banjos, violins, cellos- but it's music to keep you warm. Rhode Island-based Brown Bird does it well. David Lamb and MorganEve Swain play the kind of foot-stomping music that revisits eras of romance and simplicity, leaning on influences from Eastern European folk, to classic bluegrass and Americana. In their latest release " Salt for Salt " the [...]

This album is a spectacular example of what can be done within the framework of traditional music to push it into the headphones of a new generation, without falling victim to incongruous stabs of modernity. Rhode Island folk duo Brown Bird's Salt for Salt is an extended spiritual rave-up of folk and blues which rages darkly on, expressing the eternal human battle to remain relevant through conflict and challenge. This is the folk album for people who love folk music and want it to remain devoid of anything commercial, a blistering testimonial recorded live to tape, capturing the band's [...]

Just listening once again to this album this morning. A stark, acoustic morning. It's quiet, understated and meant to curl around you, clutch onto you and become part of you. I know there is a new album out from Brown Bird (Salt for Salt - see here ) - but this previous album, along with earlier albums such as Tautology , Such Unrest and even the Split EP with Annie Palmer always bring a certain sound out of this artist for me. [...]
Brown Bird - Thunder and Lightning Brown Bird - Bilgewater When I got my first crack at hearing Brown Bird I was totally floored. Amazed at how much great sound duo David Lamb & Morganeve Swain produce together. Their influences are varied but reside mostly in roots rock, early American Folk, Gypsy music. Salt for Salt is the perfect example of this blend. Its a total joy to listen to. Its this dark side of folk that they mainly explore.Brown Bird has a tendency towards the dark side. Pulling from [...]

Brown Bird - Salt For Salt Supply & Demand: 2011 Brown Bird inhabits a dark territory, a sonic outlier in the contemporary folk genre, singing saloon songs for the road-weary. This is to say, Salt for Salt , their latest LP is eerie, sparse, spooky, suspenseful and simply superb - an antidote to cliche-ridden muck miring within the burgeoning folk genre. In many ways, Salt for Salt (released Oct. 18, via Supply & Demand) is an ideal autumn album. The lyrics and tones touch on hard-earned [...]
Perhaps our favorite album of the week is the debut, self-titled release from Colorado duo, Gauntlet Hair. If you're a fan of Animal Collective, then it's likely you'll dig the sounds of Gauntlet Hair, especially the lead tracks below, "Top Bunk" and "Keep Time." Following right behind GH is the newest single, "Yellow Missing Signs," [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe
