Wow, a really late album review on Song, by Toad, whoever would have expected that? Well, pretty much anyone who ever reads this page I suppose, but erm, well why change the habit of a lifetime. I really like this band, but this album could easily have been a disappointment. Primarily, would being shouted at for forty minutes whilst the drums were enthusiastically spanked by a Mancunian Duracell Bunny having a fit really have been all that much fun to listen to, because that's easily what Born to Lose could have been. Brown Brogues [...]

Supported by Brown Brogues & British Sea Power As a new trend British Sea Power are playing support to their support band and come on a mere twenty minutes after doors open for a short five track set. The Rescue Rooms is already rammed so everyone has clearly got to know about this. [...]

The Queuecast is the best I could come up with in an attempt to amalgamate the anticipation of heading off to SXSW on the weekend, with the inevitable queueing to get into stuff once there. Actually, that’s not quite true. There’s so much going on at places like SXSW that really, if the thing you want to see has an annoying queue (and for me they are never anything other than annoying) outside it, then you can always walk five minutes down the road, walk straight in untroubled, and see something else equally brilliant instead. Mrs. [...]
The VPME Here we have something of a Brown Brogues triple header (oo-er)! Mark Vernon one half of Brown Brogues, AKA King DJ is steadily gathering more musical nom de guerre's than that pretentious prancing purple garbed passion-pygmy sometimes known as Prince. You can now add Ize to Mark's collection of musical aliases, as he teams up with Faith from PINS, to produce some raw and ragged swamp blues basement rock n' roll psychosis , which with a touch of eye-liner and some leather pants could see them transforming themselves [...]

Scuzz rockers Brown Brogues are going to release their début album Born To Lose on Ultra Cool Records on January 21st. To celebrate they've got a video of 'Mike, I Love You' taken at a party in Manchester, which you can see below. Tracklisting 1 - I SAY OH YOU SAY YEAH 2 - MIKE, I LOVE YOU 3 - YOU'RE NOT MINE 4 - MAY I WALK WITH YOU 5 - LEATHER PUSHERS [...]

Manchester noise duo Brown Brogues have revealed details of their upcoming debut album. The pair will release Born to Lose via the wonderfully-named Ultra Cool Records come 21 January 2013. The band have scheduled special launch shows at London's Old Blue Last and the Roadhouse in Manchester on 10 January and 12 January respectively to celebrate the release. As well as this, they've teased the release by revealing a new video to their track 'Mike, I Love You'. Watch that below, beneath their [...]
King DJ is the solo project of a certain Mark from Brown Brogues , although I get the impression calling it a project might be slightly over-stating the level of seriousness with which this stuff is treated. Not that it's throwaway or anything, more that having asked him about it, Mark himself replied that it is simply something which he keeps tucked away on the sidelines that he can work on with no pressure, no goals and without the practical restrictions of writing for a guitar-and-drums two-piece. King DJ is something which is intended to work as [...]

2012 has been a great year for Brown Brogues. So far have toured the UK and America for the second time, toured France for the first time and released their 3rd single and video 'Anyone But You' on Flexi disc. They are currently working on their first album and as a break from recording they are embarking on their 3rd tour of the UK. JULY TOUR [...]

Shout out to this holiday for making me feel more foreign and overwhelmed by Union Jack bunting & this damn cutout at my work (see the above incredible art I did for this mix) but I did want to celebrate Englishness by putting together a few of my favorite songs by English bands (well, except for Low Cut Connie but they have an English person in the band, so I guess it counts): 01 Low Cut Connie - Right Here 02 Virals - Magic Happens 03 Sealings - Milkshake [...]

Well, it's a vulgar headline, but you know I will. No-one wants to be that stupid prick at the world's busiest music festival with not a fucking soul at his fucking picnic. So honestly, please come! In all honesty, I think you'll struggle to find a finer lineup for an afternoon's entertainment. Blitzen Trapper are headlining. Mute's Big Deal are playing too, who I discovered courtesy of the brilliant PAWS covering one of their songs for our June split 123. Jonathan Meiburg from Shearwater will be playing a stripped back set with an electric guitar and a backing [...]

Ah, Tartan Shortbread, that most wonderful of sardonic Scottish put-downs. For those unfamiliar with the term, this is the offhand dismissal used to describe the sort of mawkish, clichéd tourist tat which masquerades as Scottish heritage and culture for those with woefully little imagination. Alternatively, I suppose you could say that Tartan Shortbread is a blanket term for Scottish heritage as a sort of motorway service station take on national identity. Anyhow, given I work very much at the coalface of the DIY music world in Scotland, I find that I have been oddly unsupportive of [...]

Alright, I know that by the end of January you are supposed to stop using terms like 'new year' but I reckoned it was about time for an update on these matters, and that seemed the most appropriate way of phrasing it. So, with a flurry of album launches coming up in the late Spring/early Summer, we have a small but exciting fistful of gigs to tide us over until then, which I will list below. Apart from the aforementioned launches, which we'll generally try and do somewhere a bit strange, I am looking at putting on as [...]

Brown Brogues 'Anyone But You' from Plastic Zoo on Vimeo . Check out Brown Brogues newest official video above for Anyone But You their brand new 73 of the same name coming from the impossibly en pointe Italian Beach Babes label. As for the song itself, besides being really great - is a different side to BroBro that I haven't really seen before. So much less aggression, but like I said, still great - I'd say erring [...]

I first heard the gritty, lo-fi and under-produced Brown Brogues ( Bandcamp ) on a Song, by Toad Podcast (a Toadcast if you will) a good while ago, but they are a band I keep turning back to for the pop-songs that underpin it all. The Manchester two-piece describe themselves as garage/jive-o-tonic and that seems to fit with a sound that feels like it was recorded on a dictaphone and a basement surrounding some catchy-as-fuck pop charm. Compare them to The White Stripes at your peril. Italian Beach Babes [...]

In 2011 Brown Brogues toured with The Kills and played SXSW and now the lo-fi garage twosome from Wigan return with their new 73 via London label Italian Beach Babes. The video for the lead track, ' Anyone But You ' was directed by Manchester's Plastic Zoo and was shot as an homage to long forgotten family holidays on an ancient VHS Camera. Catch the boys live around the UK in support of the single, [...]

Brown Brogues return with the next single 'Anyone But You', to be released on 7" through one of London's most exciting new labels Italian Beach Babes. The video, directed by Plastic Zoo - founders of Manchester video blog MCR Scenewipe - sees the duo take to the beach, and feels like equal parts Cormac McCarthy's The Road and a lost VHS of a forgotten family holiday. As a follow up to the much loved "Treet U Beta" video, this was lovingly filmed through a 17 year old Hitachi VHS Camera.

Italian Beach Babes are putting out a 7" Flexi by Brown Brogues , featuring the track you can see below. 'Anyone But You' is exactly what you'd expect from the band, and is summed up nicely in the video they put together for it, featuring some dogs and a beach. The 7" is backed with 'I Drove For Miles Just To Hear About The Book That You're Reading' and can be pre-ordered here .

Came across this kickass collab between Brown Brogues ' Mark masquerading as King DJ and Manchester upstarts Cold Bones . This demo is totally wild-eyed and rough around the edges, but the sinister guitar and vocals work really well with the mid-song freakouts, both making me come back for more. Don't know much more about No Need For Names other than it rules, and that's pretty much all you need to know. mp3: Cold Bones (feat. King DJ) - No [...]
