Blogger wouldn't let us use more than 200 characters in our labels, hence this second post, as promised. What a bunch of characters Blogger are. And just look at poor Brown Recluse down there, its Play arrow all wumpy-jawed. Sheesh. (Hope you enjoy the music, though.) This is a bummer to hear. Slumberland Records' Brown Recluse has decided to call it quits. The genteel indie pop outfit released a statement (part of which is below) this past weekend via the band's Facebook profile before Tim Meskers' performance opening for Gruff Rhys at PhilaMOCA. The band still plans to release a final collection of unreleased material, alternative mixes and demos towards the end of the year. Thanks to The Key for bringing it to our attention. Brown Recluse has formally dissolved its collective [...]
Over the weekend, Philly popsters Brown Recluse quietly announced that they were calling it quits after seven years, an EP and full-length with revered indie label Slumberland Records, and several self-releases. From the band's Facebook page: Brown Recluse has formally dissolved its collective efforts in performance and production. Work is in progress on a collection ... Continue reading
Meeting at the crossroads of introspective indiepop and aggressive punk is Philadelphia’s Pet Milk. You see it in the group’s pedigree – drummer Josh Agran also plays in the mighty Paint it Black, a long standing local hardcore act, while singer-guitarist Herbie Shellenberger is an alumnus of South Philly-based Slumberland Records popsters Brown Recluse. Bassist ... Continue reading

If you follow this site, you've got to know my affinity for really well written indie-pop tunes, so I was pleased to come across Pet Milk through the suggestion of Literature front-man, Nate. Apparently, the Philly group carries with them some members of Brown Recluse (a solid band on Slumberland ), but Adriane's vocals on this recording provided a nice little twist to the band's sound, giving it a hint of warm sexuality. Still, you'll find my favorite musical trademarks like heavy-handed guitar jangles and anxious drumming; [...]

Enter a large unfamiliar house in the hopes of finding a hidden treasure. The interior hallways are long and poorly illuminated. Every door looks the same. As you rummage through this ancient structure every, he floorboards creak making you hold your breath fearing the worst. Yet every corner turned and every door opened contains the light and warmth of possibility, but you never know what's going to be on the other side of that door, unseen around the bend or what lurks behind. Baroque pop Philadelphians Brown Recluse provide the soundtrack to this journey into the unknown. Sometimes, [...]

The warmer weather might have you in the mood for sunny tunes and the summer to come. If so, Brown Recluse will provide the soundtrack to those feelings when they play Kung Fu Necktie tonight. The local outfit has a way of mixing 60s sunshine pop with arcade 80s sounds. They self-describe themselves as Baroque-pop, and there are bits of Belle and Sebastian-esque moments disbursed throughout their music. The daydream-y quality of their songs can get you so lost in its warm glow that you almost don't notice the sometimes eerie lyrics that lay underneath their soundscapes, which [...]

photo courtesy of Acres of Diamonds "Our recording process has been somewhat glacial," jokes Sarah Davis, the singer and keyboardist / glockenspielist for earthy, expressive Philly rock combo Acres of Diamonds . The band's excellent self-titled EP dropped in summer of 2010, and it has been working on the followup at an extremely measured pace in the time since. But that's completely fine; if the end result is a collection of songs as rich and inspired as today's Philly Local Phile, AOD's brand-new number "Penultimate," it will be absolutely worth the wait. This show began like any other, but without the transition difficulties. All was smooth. The music, on the other hand, was not. After a long, satisfying week, I was in need of some loud, abrasive rock music. But it wasn't all like that. Due to the cold weather, I mixed in some beach pop, fuzzy dream pop and good old garage rock and pop. Don't forget to hit up the bottom of this post and listen to two tracks from the playlist! "Torn Curtain" by Television [...]

Brown Recluse may describe themselves as "psychedelic/baroque pop," but what I hear, especially on their record, Panoptic Mirror Maze , is a spiraling funnel of vintage easy listening, Monkees-meet-Brian Wilson coastal radio pop, loose lo-fi lounge, organ rock, and 8-bit experiments. I know--that's super specific. But in order to understand the greatness of one of Philly's best kept secrets, you have to understand the textures and layers that define their sound. The band's ironic richness will be mixed in at Johnny Brenda's tonight with the one-man alt-hop innovator, Lushlife , who twists and melds beautiful old world [...]

Today's free mp3 is wonderful indiepop from Philadelphia, courtesy of Brown Recluse . 'Impressions of a City Morning' is taken from their album 'Evening Tapestry' which is out now.

El Brown Recluse is Michael Ramos' most fully realized expression of the Charanga Cakewalk concept he's been developing for half a dozen years. Like the best conjunto music, El Brown Recluse is all about the dance floor. But the ballroom in this case is full of cowboy boots and skinny jeans. Read more »

Is there a recipe for a good song? Is there a recipe for a good album? Perfection may not exist, but good songs and good albums exist after a formula. But forget good albums and good songs. Forget them, because artistic mastery don?t have recipes: they appear when the artist tries to make real what is inside is mind. And some know how to do it better then others. That?s why there are good songs, good albums, and there is Evening Tapestry, released by Slumberland Records. Recall the first appearence of Brown [...]

The Loxosceles reclusa species is one spider you may want to be bitten by after swaying and swooning to Brown Recluse 's headlining set at Kung Fu Necktie tonight. Fueled by hypnotizing keys and soothing vox, with a merriment-pop vibe, the local natives and one of Philly's unsung heroes in the indie music scene will infest your auditory perception with the most pleasant toxins. Joining Brown Recluse will be four-piece Arc In Round , led by producer extraordinaire Jeff Zeigler ( Kurt Vile , The War on Drugs , Pink Skull ), reflecting a dark pop [...]

FRIDAY, AUGUST 26 Brown Recluse is firmly grounded in Philadelphia. The band's latest album, Evening Tapestry (released on the iconic indie-pop label Slumberland last spring) was recorded at Sound In The Round Studios in Philly. They've even got a song called "Conshohocken Curve." Despite their burgeoning reputation—Brown Recluse has played with Matt and Kim and Tokyo Police Club, among others—the six-piece band remains committed to their roots. Brown Recluse performs with Arc in Round and Royal Shoals at 7:30 p.m. at Kung Fu Necktie; tickets to the 21+ show are $8. [...]

Tweet Timothy Meskers, Mark Saddlemire and their mates may as well have been curating our mixtapes recently given the amount of their songs which end up there. This year's 'Impressions of a City Morning' is probably their bona-fide classic yet a couple of years earlier they were still turning out indie pop gems. Like the 12-inch vinyl release 'The Soft Skin' that included 'Night Train', a song so flush with gleeful dynamics it could surely erase sun-drenched clouds from the sky. It's [...]

It's been some time since I've posted on this blog and I am happy that topomodesto gave me the opportunity to put together a mix. In the face of algorithm driven mix generation I hope that there continues to be interest in crafting diverse listening experiences. What may start as a matter of convenience easily translates into common practice. Collecting and orchestrating music samples into coherent ideas may be perfected by professional dj's, but I find my interests don't take root until I search out the connections between songs and artists myself. And this invariably leads [...]
Thank god the heat is starting to subside around here, if i have to listen to another person complain about the temperature i think i'm going to snap... it's not that bad... relax. Sorry thought that it needed to be said. Anyways here's a few songs: . Phineas and the Lonely Leaves- The Feeling . [...]

Sunshiny and warm at first listen, Brown Recluse (named after a poisonous spider for some unfathomable reason) is good at what it does - faithfully reproducing the sounds of indie pop giants like Belle and Sebastian and Of Montreal, even Neutral Milk Hotel at several turns. Well-harmonized, upbeat and catchy, Evening Tapestry succeeds at being a fun background album - a good choice for driving or an afternoon workout. What it does not even begin to do is anything new. Chord progressions and stylistic tactics that would be excellent if they hadn't already been done to [...]
