Bruce Haack made some of the weirdest, most zonked electronic pop known to man, but he didn't get enough credit for it at the time. His first records were coming out in the early '60s, and Moog music technology was just getting into the hands of musicians, so a lot of the pioneering tunes from that era were full of wild experimentation and sounds people were hearing for the very first time. They're fascinating listens now, but audiences at the time just weren't there yet. Thankfully, Haack's records stood the test of time, and he's since received a fair [...]

Kosmilised teemad ja ulme on mulle ju ikka meeldinud ja aeg-ajalt on see ka siin välja paistnud. Nüüd jälle ja suisa topelt. Alustuseks on Käärkäsi Soundcloudi üles laadinud ühe audioreisi kosmosesse. Käärkäsi aKa Sizorz - Speiss Teine reis tuleb Youtube'ist, kus on ühes videos kokku saanud elektropioneer Bruce Haacki muusika ja minu lapsepõlve paljude õudusunenägude allikas - ulmeklassika Navigaator Pirx, siin küll Ungari telesari, mitte Poola-Nõukogude film, mis mind kummitas.

"On top of spaghetti, all covered with cheese..." At a Polish church basement sale in the EV a few months ago, I bought this Tom Glazer cassette for something like 50 cents. I also bought a lot of Polskie Nagrania vinyl in the hopes that it would be jazz but it all turned out to be light instrumental/vocal music of one kind or another. Of course, the real charm was the coffee and cupcakes being sold and the Polish kids intended to market them. I'd never heard of Tom Glazer before--but, incidentally, I came across [...]

There's been a seemingly endless flow of good remixes attacking the blogosphere as of late. Nothing high profile or anything, but definitely some exceptional reworks of some equally... [go to the website to read the rest of the article, download mp3s and more]

Because five hours remain in unofficial Dilla influence Day (little known fact: it is also Treat Your Secretary Right Day, sponsored by Chubb Rock ), Stones Throw's stellar Bruce Haack compilation deserves metnion. There is a straight line from the late vocoder pioneer to a song like " E=MC2 ." Somehow, this record escaped review from Pitchfork, RA, Dusted, Fact, and everywhere else. Its lone official review came from Pop Matters, who allowed a church musician to give it a 2/10. Admittedly, Haack is no Michael W. Smith. However, he was a Julliard-schooled, peyote-ingesting polymath [...]
Je n'aime pas les ballades tranquilles. Le long des immeubles je cherche du regard les planques, pour t'y attirer peut-être. Bruce Haack - Maybe this song ANBB (Alva Noto & Blixa Bargeld) - I wish i was a mole in the ground (extended)
Another remarkable selection courtesy of those lovely chaps over at 14 Tracks ; Last weeks collection focused on disco with electronically enhanced grooves. Mega picks from the likes of Space System, Peter Gordon & Love of Life Orchestra, Soundforce and many more (11 to be precise). A little taste for you, here's Pablo Mandelbrot with the wonderfully mutated 'Hot Swap'. Pick up the record here . Oddball electro tune reminiscent of late Kraftwerk. Brilliant. Thank-you Robin for the recommendation!

Up until now, you've probably never heard of Bruce Haack . And that's a crime. But it's a name you'll be hearing more and more in the coming months and years. Proto-hiphop, proto-vocoder, pre-dating Kraftwerk. Building his own modular synths in the 602s. Writing surreal, hallucinatory children's songs. Experimenting with peyote, making a psychrocktronic concept album about Lucifer and "powerlove". What a fascinating character. Stone's Throw and Peanut Butter Wolf are putting out Farad: The Electric Voice on October 19. From the [...]

Things have been pretty quiet in the 20 Jazz Funk Dates office since we launched a few weeks ago. The phone rings never with the silence of a firing squad's post-coital epitaph, and our inbox is deader than the crims they just shot. What's wrong with people these days? Is everyone shacked up already? Were [...]

Bruce Haack (1931-1988) was an electronic music pioneer. He created a variety of synth devices and put them to groundbreaking use. After accumulating a significant body of work, in 1982, he released a collaborative song with Def Jam's Russell Simmons, "Party Machine," which turned out to be Haack's last published work. YouTube Direktvideo link [Embedded Video] This summer, Stones Throw will release Farad: The Electronic Voice , a collection of Haack's work. It will focus on Haack's work with the vocoder. He [...]
