Hectic doesn't begin to describe my life these days. Two weeks away from curtain in our local production of Alice In Wonderland, with a title role in The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe waiting in the wings, my brain swims with characterizations, half-learned lines and dance moves. School Committee work comes to a head now, too, with budget season and the superintendent's evaluation on our plate, and a town demanding answers as budget dollars continue to sink. Back at work, state testing begins next week, making a hash of curriculum even as we push [...]

Two weeks ago, I stayed overnight in the home of Bob Weiser , an old folkfest friend, community organizer, and long-time community radio mainstay with regular shows in two Massachusetts communities. As both a music publisher / distributer of sorts and an old radiohand myself - see below for more on that - it was inevitable that the conversation turn to radio, and we stayed up late chatting about the changes which digitalization has brought to both radio signal distribution and playlist management, not to mention the potential transformation of form, function, and fandom which the streamable [...]
Covers of all eight songs from the 37 million-selling record. It even makes "Stairway to Heaven" listenable again!

My brother was the Talking Heads fan in our household. As such, my strongest memories of the group are primarily visual: David Byrne in his trademark oversized suits; album cover images, most especially the stark black-and-tan cover of Stop Making Sense; the New Wave theatricality of the concert video espied in passing as I wandered through the living room looking for books. By the time we were old enough to venture out to concerts on our own, the band, while technically still together, was primarily involved in solo projects, due [...]
One of my friends recently moved to Chicago and complained to me about the lack of good radio stations. This puzzled me, as it seemed to imply that there were good stations anywhere anymore. If there are, I don't know 'em, which leads me to ask this question:Jesse Malin – Do You Remember Rock 'n' Roll Radio? (The Ramones)Joey and the gang predicted the demise of radio by a good twenty years.
Saw the movie Marley and Me today. There are so many movies that I want to go see, but when it comes down to it, I usually end up seeing shit like this. But whatever, it was at the $1.50 theater. I thought this movie was gonna be pure fluff, but that fucking dog started dying like 15 minutes into the movie and the remaining hour and a half was full of tough life decisions, suffering relationships, and a family coping with death. It makes me miss my old dog though. Anyways, the reason for this post is [...]

I'm happy to announce that we've been invited to guestblog over at Breakthrough Radio , a wonderfully eclectic Internet radio station specializing in a wide swath of independent music chosen by a diverse set of DJs. I'll be spending the week over there exploring the potential of a new forum, spreading the good word and shuffling through a veritable feast of originals and covers. I'll also be simulcasting all entries here, so you won't have to miss a trick. Unfortunately, I had to write all the entires in advance, which [...]

This week's coversfest is the most cramped yet. I present the original song with not one, not two, but three cover versions. Today's song was written and performed originally by a one-hit wonder if ever there was one. Ever heard of Wall Of Voodoo? If you have, it's either because you've heard Mexican Radio (today's song), or you're some kind of supernerd that likes relatively unsuccessful 80s pop bands. Mexican Radio is a very catchy pop song, boasting a memorable chorus, originality and delicately inventive instrumentation. [...]
