![Bruce Peninsula: EONS, Neil Haverty & Misha Bower’s Book Release @ Raw Sugar Cafe [February 28, 2013]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4808755_lg.jpg)
A nice way to end February 2013 with this show at Raw Sugar Cafe . Arboretum Music + Arts Festival presented their first line of shows for 2013. You can say it was the Bruce Peninsula trio featuring EONS , Neil Haverty and Misha Bower . It was also the Ottawa book release for Misha Bower 's Music For Uninvited Guests . (Read most of it and it's brilliantly good) It was a strip [...]

Jonathon Bernstein As I mentioned back in October , in a few years - or even sooner - the late Spiral Beach could well be regarded as an important touchstone in the recent history of the Toronto independent scene. Bassist Dorian Wolf now holds down those same duties in internationally-noted electronic act Austra , guitarist Airick Woodhead is garnering heaps of attention as the circuit-bending Doldrums , and the remaining two members - keyboardist/vocalist Maddy Wilde and drummer Daniel Woodhead - have slowly but surely been turning heads as the dreampop-peddling Moon [...]

by Tiana Feng St. George the Martyr Church on 197 John Street transforms itself occasionally into The Music Gallery hosting nights of eclectic music for those who yearn to listen. On Thursday night, Evening Hymns and Neil Haverty played to a sold crowd of family friends and fans. Neil Haverty of Bruce Peninsula performed a solo set singing his own tunes accompanied only by his guitar. He humbly thanked the Music Gallery [...]

Thursday night saw the Front Room of the Great Hall play host to the release party for Misha Bower' s new book, Music for Uninvited Guests ( Cringles , 2012). Despite the fact that this is Bower's first book, it's far from her first time writing, as she's also known as one of the founding members of Bruce Peninsula , Toronto's best gospel-tinged folk-rock collective. It was a touch louder than most literary launches, as Bower called upon various members from her main band and the Toronto music scene [...]

Music For Uninvited Guests by Misha Bower from Misha Bower on Vimeo . Bruce peninsula's singularly stunning chanteuse Misha Bower is getting set to release her first book of fiction, Music For Uninvited Guests with a series of book launch parties: the first on Thursday, October 11th at Toronto's The Great Hall (Conversation Room) features Misha reading with guest performances from Doug Paisley, Simone Schmidt (of Fiver and formerly of One Huundred Dollars) and Bruce Peninsula in an acoustic set; the secoond on Saturday, November 3rd [...]

Ingram Barss There's been a series of articles The Grid for the past year called Then & Now that has been diligently recording the history of Toronto's musical history by way of its clubs and venues, many of which have been consigned to history regardless of what legendary acts have sweat upon their stages. It's truly fascinating reading - especially if you take the time to look up what sort of pedestrian businesses reside at those addresses today - but it's comforting to know that the [...]

Live music picks for THURSDAY MAY 24 through MONDAY MAY 28, 2012. THURSDAY MAY 24 / BRUCE PENINSULA / THE GREAT HALL / 1087 QUEEN W / $12 - $15 / ALL AGES Drop everything you're doing and go to this show. Trust me, you won't regret it, because Bruce Peninsula is quite simply one of the most astounding acts I've ever had the pleasure of coming across. It's difficult to even tag them with a genre--they blend elements ranging from gospel, folk, rock, country, and [...]

Trying to determine "the best" album of the year is always going to be an exercise in subjectivity, and well it should be. You can assign points for technical proficiency, and set all kinds of arbitrary criteria as if this was a figure skating competition, but even at the Olympics, they're looking at artistic impression. In my year-end columns, I always stress that I'm very uncomfortable saying my choices are "the best" records of the year, deferring to the old stand-by "favourite albums" tag to define my choices. Being a Polaris Music Prize [...]

by teepoo Whoa, here is a 14 minute long new track by
(Norman Wong) Last Tuesday, Bruce Peninsula released "Of Songs", a 13 minute and 47 second song cycle that they have been working on with tender love and care over the past few years. It features contributions from 15 members of the Bruce Peninsula collective: Neil Haverty, Matthew Cully, Misha Bower, Andrew Barker, Steven McKay, Tamara Lindeman, Ivy Mairi, Kari Peddle, Amy Learmonth, Daniela Gesundheit, Leon Taheny, Taylor Kirk, Christienne Chesney, Mike Smith and Dan Goldman. They recorded "Of Songs" with Leon Taheny throughout 2010 in basements and [...]

Norman Wong We're going to close out the week with some new and hopefully interesting stuff to listen to, domestic-style. Unless you're not Canadian in which case this will all be strange and foreign and exotic. Whoooooo! Last week, Bruce Peninsula were teasing on their website that something big was coming as of April 24 and they weren't kidding. And it's literally big - an epic-sized, three-part, almost 14-minute song cycle entitled "Of Songs" that takes the band's choral gospel-blues sound in unexpectedly experimental directions. It's available to stream - as below [...]

Frank Yang If you were to plot out my appreciation for Patrick Watson on a graph versus time and geography, the salient data points would read something like this: September 2007, Toronto, Ontario - Watson wins the second Polaris Music Prize with his second album Close To Paradise , an album I was almost wholly unfamiliar with despite the fact that, as a juror, I probably should have been. I generally resent him for this because I was sure that Feist was [...]

Frank Yang Though his punk credentials are beyond reproach thans to his tenure in Propagandhi , John K. Samson has always cut a bit of a curious figure in front of The Weakerthans . While his bandmates are more than willing and able to play the part of rockers in turning out muscular guitar riffs and solos, Samson by comparison has always been a bit slight of stature, reedy of voice, sheepish of grin; the thoughtful and verbose folksinger who somehow ended up fronting a rock band. I don't know if the [...]
At a younger age, there would be no way I'd catch myself at the office on the saturday of a birthday weekend. Perhaps this is what happens when you turn 34. I'd now rather take an afternoon to power through this inbox, plus post about all these great tunes I've bookmarked from the last two weeks, than start drinking at 1 in the afternoon. Maybe I can do both actually.... Soundtrack to this exact moment is the new video for Bruce Peninsula 's song "In Your Light" off the record Open Flames . The [...]

When we spoke to Neil Haverty of Bruce Peninsula back in 2009 , the band had just been Polaris long-listed for their debut album A Mountain is a Mouth . Back then Haverty spoke about the logistics of putting a multi-membered project together both in the studio and on the road, introduced us to some of the band members' other projects, and placed a lot of stock in the band's capacity to be adaptable in the face of change. This skill has been vital to the band in the two years leading [...]
![Snowblink – The Tired Bees [Music video]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3979031_lg.jpg)
Snowblink is one of my favorite acts you have to see live. Last year their album " Long Live " was re-released worldwide and opening up to acts like Jeff Tweedy, Owen Pallett and Ohbijou. While no word on when Daniela Gesundheit and Dan Goldman will return to the studio and make a new album. Why not check out their music video to " The Tired Bees ". Directed by Carla Susanto . It is a beautiful animated music video.

Here is part four of the Best of 2011 Canadian albums. We are almost getting to the Top 10. These albums that are still worthy to check out. Here is the ranking from #20-11. 20. Sound of Lions - 11.44 Listen to Blue , Counting Eights , One and Passive Attack . 19. Mother Mother - Eureka [...]

This week, Quick Before it Melts welcomes the roster of Hand Drawn Dracula to help round out 2011 with a series of guest posts. Today, guest blogger Neil Haverty of Bruce Peninsula muses musically on an unforgettable 2011. (Norman Wong) 2011 was a big year for me. Half of it was the worst year of my life (I was sick for a lot of it) and [...]
