The New Oxford American Dictionary has declared that 'hypermiling' is the 2008 Word of the Year. It was coined by car expert Wayne Gerdes, and it means "an attempt to maximise gas mileage by making fuel-conserving adjustments to one's car and one's driving techniques". Hypermilers employ techniques like driving under the speed limit, avoiding hills and maintaining proper tire pressure. The word beats other contenders, including 'aejwlk', 'hvkjahdvkjah' and 'yo'.
