derTANZ // Kaktusz Whatever is going on over in the music scene in Budapest (and just Hungary in general) I am so into it. I cracked into the scene with Piresian Beach and from there I found Broken Cups , Halál Judit , Busó and Summer Schatzies . With the exception of Summer Schatzies , all the music I’ve stumbled upon has been super dark, [...]

Every since I got sent over Pom Peri Posse's upcoming 2-year compilation with Etush Ya's track, ' Many Lies ', I have been hooked on his Hungarian lo-fi melodic sound. He recently released, Organism , on his bandcamp page, which is a 7-track album filled with dreamy electronic beat sampling. Definitely keep an ear out for this guys' sound, it surely wont be regretted. Download, Organism , below... Organism by Etush Ya

Budapest artist Zagar has just released a new single called "Space Medusa". The track is superb and well balanced, even the autotuned voice fits perfectly on this track. Zagar will be featured on Kitzuné Parisien 3 compilation; it is a well known fact that Kitzuné tends to unearth some of the best unknown artist out there and it's no surprise that Zagar was picked with this honor. Zagar - Space Medusa [...]
We continually search far and wide for something; anything to prick the ear and compel, kicking and screaming at the lobes. However from time to time, a certain something which transpires to be unspeakably fine resonates out from right behind you, as today is the case with London ambient architect Moon Zero . Aeolus, the latest from the evasive drone-preferring producer, couldn't better befit this afternoon were it enwrapped in layer upon layer of dense wool for it genuinely sounds like a blizzard a-whirr with prickly stabs of whitish noise and sweeping barbs of squawking gust. It's music to make [...]
Thanks to everyone who supported us in this amazing year! It's time for a little retrospective... We are super happy to have ended up in the top 100 mixes on Play FM & Mixcloud, got online + print features/interviews on Mixmag, Ibiza Voice, Prinz Berlin, Athinorama, Berlin Poche, Time Out Tel Aviv, Killerrr, MitVergnuege n, Elektroaktivisten, Peanut Butter & Jams, ZasMag, [...]

You may have heard of YOLANDA BE COOL from a fairly well known track of theirs scattered with cheeky trumpets, Latino verses and general dance-floor swashing. The pair have just issued a product recall claiming that “the beats are no longer fresh” and that the song has taken over their entire image – just in time for the release of their album Ladies and Mentalmen . We got speaking to one half of the Sydney-based dance duo, Johnson “Durango Slim” Peterson , on the creation of the [...]

Summer Schatzies // Take Me to Bohemia Well I’ll be darned if this isn’t a wonderful little surprise. Zsófia from Budapest dark-pop band Piresian Beach just shot this EP over to me a few days ago. Summer Schatzies is a new band that she started earlier this summer with members of fellow Hungarian bands Broken Cups and Halál Judit . Given the shadowy sonic places that Piresian Beach and Broken [...]
It's not without some hidden joy, that I discovered and played on mys sets the band "Nouvelle Phenomene" , timeless music with real soul of the 802s like Visage, Softcell or Ultravox sometimes with the spirit of Chromatics. Syncopated rhythms and keyboards that are perfectly mastered. They perform a French Berliner Pop and new wave [...]

My friend Rob swears against it. Last night, another friend, Samuel, declared it utterly despicable. Now that I think about it, I can't think of a single friend who has ever listed Budapest among the cities they just have to visit before they die. A former Kiwi colleague of mine in Buenos Aires did once tell me that he loves the Hungarian capital, and he may or may not be living there at the moment. His must be the only positive review I've ever heard of it, other than my own. I've gone exactly once. It was [...]

When in Budapest, look up. Budapest's buildings are beautiful and ugly, a fascinating mixture of all kinds.of architectural styles: gothic, classic, art nouveau, brutalist. The beautiful buildings radiate, adorned with symbols and alive with detail. The uglier buildings are monumentally so, and tell of a dark history. I went [...]

Still reeling from the excitement that was Uprising Festival, the next morning we took a train from Bratislava to Budapest. In about 2 hours we reached our destination and checked into a hostel. Even though I say hostel, we actually had two rooms with attached bathrooms, not really a 12-person dormitory scene like one would imagine. We met up with some friends from Denmark who were hanging with us during our Budapest leg. We wasted no time and walked around the city. Even tried some local Hungarian food, which was a complete fail. Perhaps it was the language barrier, but [...]
New Delhi reggae soundsystem Reggae Rajahs are going to embark on a European tour this August. The trio are all set to visit Norway, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary before they play the Outlook Festival in Croatia (more on that here ). The Reggae Rajahs' first European tour will kick off in Norway, thanks to the efforts of Rikskonsertene /KRUNK (speaking of KRUNK, Bay Beat Collective are on a tour of Europe as well ) which has organized plenty of tours for artists from Norway and India in the past. They will also play a [...]

Broken Cups // Slaves of the Grave This release found its way to me courtesy of Zsófia Németh (who some of you might recognize as Piresian Beach ). She is good friends with the group and is eager to share their music with anyone who is willing to listen. Broken Cups hail from Budapest, Hungary and their sinister take on 1980’s post-punk borders on being straight up gothic. Doing their best to “keep music evil”, the band insists on keeping things pretty dark here. [...]
Dorothy’s Legs | Then You Run There’s something strangely eerie about ‘ Then You Run ’. Instrumentally, it could disguise itself as a vogue pop song of new-wave coolness, but at its centre, where the vocals lie, there’s a sinister side lurking within. Lead vocalist Lili Walters is tense in her performance, her voice placed at the very top of the mix. Maybe it’s her, maybe it’s the creeping synths: Either way, this slice of Budapest-based pop is anything but standard fare. [...]

Here's the first part of History Of The Hawk 's European tour diary. Singer, Nathan Coyle has promised photos of what they've eaten, so it'll be just like Instagram. (You can follow ThrashHits on Instagram, by the way.) In Part 1 we follow the Stourbridge quintet from Manchester to the Mainland where they do... some slightly homo-erotic stuff and then play gigs. Cool. Day 1: The journey We're currently sitting on a bus heading to Manchester airport, eye-bleeding bored. I think I'm getting a bit [...]

Tóth Kína Hegyfalu is the Budapest, Hungary based duo of Kinga Toth and Gergely Normal. The pair has a strong performance art bent, with Gergely's sparse, often minimalist instrumentation serving as counterpoint and complement to Kinga's poetry, which takes the form of aggressive growls, and wails. Gergely also contributes the artwork for the releases, which also reflect the ever present themes of alienation and violence. Tollasbál represents a fervent desire to capture the disruptively awkward and often unsettling feel of an art house performance. Standing in contrast to most of the record, "it hurts (kapar)" forcefully prods the listener into [...]

MIXTAPE MONDAYS! I would guess about half the music I end up loving comes from mixtapes, so of course Monday is easily my favorite fucking day of the week to share new stuff with y’all. Hence the exclamation point and generally overly excited disposition. This week is off the fucking hinges with all kinds of treats with mixes from Stay+ and Bonobo, Dinowalrus/Blizzardo’s Pete Feigenbaum’s Acid House mix for Sup Mag, Dropping Gems Records second edition of exclusive tracks and UUUUUUU AAAAAAA. Mondays don’t suck. You just need better tunes. [...]
