Its the stuff of rural life, desperation, poverty, chances taken, opportunities missed...it's dark, folky, americana. The gritty twanged vocals [...]

I've fallen a little behind over the Holidays, but I'm going to try to get back on track and get the list finished up soon. We'll start back today with #9. #9 - Written in Chalk by Buddy & Julie Miller Based solely on critical acclaim and awards, this would be the number one album on the list... hands down. Buddy & Julie nearly swept the Americana Music Awards in September. The husband and wife team captured awards for Duo/Group of the Year, Album [...]

01 The Avett Brothers | I and Love and You ( buy ) I don't think it would be possible to look back at 2009 and not think about the Avett Brothers and this record. The two will be forever cemented in time together. I saw the band in Chicago , San Francisco and Madison - each time different, but wonderful memories that made up some of my favorite nights of the year. This record chases down big dreams, is the product of hard work [...]

I love Steve Earle and Allison Moorer. I think Bruce Robison and Kelly Willis are great. Karin Bergquist and Linford Detweiler of Over the Rhine make me giddy. You know how I feel about Kasey Chambers and Shane Nicholson. For my money, though, Buddy & Julie Miller are the first couple of Americana music. Buddy is the multi-instrumentalist/producer /singer/songwriter [...]

*** Well... The results are in from last night's Americana Honors and Awards Show, and the winners are Buddy Miller, Buddy Miller, Buddy Miller, Buddy Miller, Gurf Morlix, and Justin Townes Earle. Obviously, Buddy was the big winner on the night. He walked away with wins for "Artist of the Year," "Duo/Group of the Year" with his wife Julie Miller, "Album of the Year" for Written in Chalk (also with Julie), and "Song of the Year" for his duet with Patty Griffin called "Chalk." [...]

So far we've covered the nominees for "Best New and Emerging Artist" and "Song of the Year" at this year's Americana Music Awards & Honors. I gave you my picks and asked you to vote for yours. You've voted for all Texas artists so far with The Band of Heathens and The Flatlanders each taking their respective categories. We'll find out who really wins when the awards get passed out September 17th in Nashville. This week, it's time to look at the "Album of the Year" nominees. I've already covered [...]

Last week, I previewed the nominees for "Best New & Emerging Artist" at this year's Americana Awards and Honors and asked you to vote for who you thought should win. You chose The Band of Heathens by an almost two-to-one margin over Sarah Borges & The Broken Singles. This week, we're going to dip into another category and ask you to vote on the "Americana Song of the Year." We'll start with "Chalk" by Buddy Miller and Patty Griffin from Buddy and Julie Miller's 2009 release [...]
On "Ellis County," husband and wife duo Buddy and Julie Miller show why they are so well regarded in the folk and country communities...

Haven't heard the new album from Buddy & Julie Miller but I've been listening to this song a lot over the past few days so I'm looking forward to hearing the rest of it. Really interested to hear the song that Robert Plant guests on. Never really listened to the duo before but I really like this song, it's definitely worth a listen. Buddy & Julie Miller - Ellis County

Last night the wind knocked out my internet access for a good couple of hours. I used my time away from the web to take a complete and uninterrupted listen to Buddy & Julie Miller's Written In Chalk , released last week on New West Records . Recorded in Nashville, TN and including guest appearances by Robert Plant , Emmylou Harris , Patty Griffin , and Larry Campbell makes this one hard to pass up. Invest the time to check out this [...]
Written In Chalk is the new album from husband and wife country duo Buddy & Julie Miller. After lengthy careers playing with a veritable who's who of country music, the couple have a lot of favours to call in. And boy do they ever. The album features guest appearances be the like of Robert Plant, Patty Griffin, and the legendary Emmylou Harris. Most of the tracks are good, down home country music
I am one of very few that thinks U2 really isn't that great, other than The Joshua Tree and a few other random songs. The fact that Rolling Stone gave the new release five stars pretty much guarantees I won't like it. But Neko Case ... ohhh Neko Case. If only you were ten years younger. Anyway, you already know I like her new album , so there's that. Wild Light 's debut is catchy, but I bet the feeling won't last long. We shall [...]

I've been listening to Buddy and Julie Miller's new album Written in Chalk for a few weeks now, but I tried to hold off on writing about it until we got a little closer to the March 3rd release date. That is until I saw on the Ramblings... blog that New West Records has made the first track from the album, "Ellis County," available as a free download from their website . For the album itself... it is a bit different from the self-titled effort they released in 2001. [...]
