Richard Thompson played songs from his new album. Gotta tell you - the weather's great here in Austin, Texas. Thursday was a bright, sunny spring day that topped out at about 80 degrees. And it was too nice outside to stay cooped up at all the official events of South by Southwest (SXSW) so we played a little hooky. We did our official bit by attending Dave Grohl's keynote address but the sunshine streaming through the glass at the Austin Convention Center was just too alluring. So we split, [...]

Jim Lauderdale and Buddy Miller. (Photo by Michael Wilson) Buddy Miller and Jim Lauderdale have known each other for more than 30 years, and they frequently hang out both on- and offstage. Separately and together, they create country music of the highest pedigree. So whenever they want to tear into a wailer or a weeper – which is fairly often - it’s always good for the listener. You can find some of these on Buddy and Jim (New West Records), the album collaboration between these two wonderfully talented music pros, and even [...]
Country music vets Buddy Miller and Jim Lauderdale bring their collaborative tour (and its corresponding album) to World Cafe Live tonight for an XPN Welcomes performance. This afternoon, they warmed up for the show with a twangy Free at Noon performance. See photos of their set in the gallery above, check out the setlist below ... Continue reading
Leagues combines the talents of three Nashville rock scene veterans. The group, comprised of Thad Cockrell, Tyler Burkum and Jeremy Lutito, recently released an EP of jangly pop rock. They've opened for the likes of The Fray and Matt Kearny, but they’re headlining their own shows as they tour the country for the next month. Tonight’s ... Continue reading

Buddy Miller and Jim Lauderdale New West Records The 11 songs that make up the new album by Buddy Miller and Jim Lauderdale are nothing different from the straight-forward country songs they've been turning out for years. There's a rocker or two, a ballad or two, a Cajun dance tune and a country shuffle, all solidly written and unpretentiously presented. Likewise, the production values and the song arrangements that comprise the 35 minutes or so of music on "Buddy and Jim" are nothing much to write home about. The production is functional, neither too glitzy [...]
When fans talk about past Phish runs at Madison Square Garden, the one that gets the least attention was a two-night stand in 1996. Unlike every other Phish MSG Run, these shows didn't take place in December. The quartet visited the "World's Most Famous Arena" just a week into a fall tour that wound up taking a while to heat up. After three and a half uneventful sets at the Garden, Phish finally broke through at the end of the second set on October 22nd with an amazing version of Weekapaug Groove that fans dubbed " Freakapaug " [...]
Two legendary singer-songwriters, Buddy Miller and Jim Lauderdale, have teamed up on a new album appropriately called Buddy and Jim. The two Americana/alt-country legends have created an excellent collection of original and cover songs that are well played, well crafted and well produced as one would expect from these two. The album is out next ... Continue reading

When you have to travel halfway around the globe, it takes a bit of advanced planning when you want to line up a tour, so just weeks removed from wrapping up a mini U.S. club run, Tame Impala have announced that they will be returning to North America early next year. The Australian psych-rock band , who released their highly recommended sophomore effort Lonerism last month, will return to the western hemisphere with their brand of acid-drenched, Beatles-esque pop for 16-date tour, which will kick off on February 19, with a gig at New [...]

Singer/songwriter Shawn Colvin’s eighth studio album is a deeply personal, deeply sustaining experience. All Fall Down was produced by her long-time pal Buddy Miller and features the input of such luminaries as Alison Krauss, Jakob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, Bill Frisell, and Mary Chapin Carpenter. The album was released June 5, the same day as her Diamonds in the Rough memoir. [...]
Singer-songwriter Shawn Colvin has made a very welcome return with her eighth studio album, All Fall Down. Collaborations with producer Buddy Miller (who first discovered Shawn three decades ago), Bill Frisell, Allison Krauss, Patty Griffin and Emmylou Harris add some fresh country flourishes, but overall the new songs stay true to the authentic, heartfelt acoustic [...]
For All Fall Down (Nonesuch), her first studio album in six years, Shawn Colvin enlisted the help of friend and versatile musical "buddy", the acclaimed guitarist and producer Buddy Miller. The initial offering of the collaboration comes via the new project's title track, a simply-structured song that, over the course of about three and a half minutes, slowly builds from hand-clapping acoustics to a epic riffed folk/rocker thanks to the shimmering guitar lines from Miller and Bill Frisell, Brian Blade's dynamic drum work and a gospel-tinged sing-along chorus that quickly embeds itself [...]

With Christmas out of the way, and the year almost over, it’s time I finally get around to compiling my Top 20 albums of the year of 2011 (in fact, there are 21 entries). Each album is represented on the mix with a song, and each entry has a link to the artist’s homepage or other outlet where the album can be ordered from. Because this list is intended not only to show off my impeccable taste, but also to showcase artists, all data files in the mix have been downscaled to 128kbps. This is not really a chart, but [...]
