Slotted high on lists as one of the greatest debut albums of all time, Buffalo Springfield introduced the public to a revolutionary new sound. Comprised of Stephen Stills, Neil Young, Richie Furay, Bruce Palmer and Dewey Martin, the collective talents of these fellows equaled a unified whole. Prior to getting together in the spring of 1966, the members of the [...]

LA from The Byrds to The Eagles This is a great BBC documentary that makes a nice companion piece for our Southern California series from last year. Here is what the BBC website has to say about it.... Documentary looking at the music and mythology of a golden era in Californian culture, and telling the story of how Los Angeles changed from a kooky backwater in the early 1960s to become the artistic and industrial hub of the American music industry by the end of the 1970s. Alongside extensive and never before [...]

groooovy! Buffalo Springfield - For What It's Worth (Nico Pusch Bootleg Remix)

Here is a nice facelift to a classic that you all will recognize. Stop. Hey what's that sound? Everybody look, here's what's going down, it's DC's Finest's Remix of the Fort Knox Five Vs. Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth" . In reference to Goldie locks and the three bears "This chair, this porridge, and this bed.... this song" fit and tastes "just right". It's simple and not overdone. It'd be so easy to mess up a classic such as this one, but DC's Finest does a superb job at remixing this already combined number. [...]

Change is in the air! This weekend President Obama was inaugurated for a second term and for the special occasion FORT KNOX FIVE chose one of their favorite anthems from the Summer of Love and remixed it into a funky party jam. Frank Yang Ideally, I'd have been able to label this one as " Metric covers Neil Young ", given that both acts are in town this week making sure the Air Canada Centre is still hosting some serious Canadiana even with the NHL locked out, but that wouldn't be quite correct. Even though Metric as a full band can officially include the Young-penned classic "Expecting To Fly" in their discography, the track I'm posting predates that by a good five years or so when frontwoman Emily Haines was operating as a solo artist and [...]

I don't have shit to say and I haven't for a while. We're spread out in unfamiliar territory. The partially read stack of books grows higher; the things I have to learn is much longer list than the songs I'm listening to. To add that I'm underwhelmed with what I'm hearing; the signal to noise ratio in music is at an all time high. djnodj at conception was a irreverent and perhaps cynical voice of Tunawax which for a brief moment had the momentum... and then dissolved. Even the name djnodj was a jab at the imaginary coolness of music, [...]

Part one of a three-part look at Neil Young's reinvention of a greatest-hits album, featuring Rush, Three Dog Night, Buddy Miles and more.
Neil Young still seems pained over the difficult times endured by the legendary 1960s band Buffalo Springfield, returning to the theme again and again in his new autobiography Waging Heavy Peace Seemingly cursed from the first, Buffalo Springfield was more influential than it ever was consistent, recording just three albums in its heyday, then seeing a long-awaited recent reunion scuttled [...]

Certain songs are impossible to hate. Certain songs are impossible to NOT love. They are timeless classics that you could play for anybody, any age, and any color, and receive the same reaction: joy. These songs belong on an imaginary list where perfection is the norm. Buffalo Springfield 's "For What It's Worth" is one of these songs. Stephen Stills made a flawless song and it's one that, if I haven't learned anything from the bloggosphere, is one of those songs that should not be touched, covered, or (gasp) remixed. Then I discovered this cover. [...]
By this estimation, the decade of the One Hit Wonder was the 1970s, as our panel of potentially stranded passengers voted for 18 tracks from that era to take along on their doomed trip. The 1980s came in second, followed by the 1960s and 1990s (in a tie), and then the 2000s. A quartet of these shooting-star songs received multiple [...]

I still mourn their passing!

As I sit down to write this on a bleary-eyed early morning, I can hear the coffee maker click on automatically. My phone dings insistently to remind me of meetings, appointments and upcoming annoyances, then it offers up a morning tweet for dessert. In my pocket I there's a little flash drive smaller than my thumb, carrying about 35 albums' worth of music with a little room for more. Technology has surely wiped some of the romance out of modern life; what did you expect? Old guys like me quickly get tiresome in referencing the past to recall [...]
![[History Lesson] Poco – “Keep On Trying”](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4193517_lg.jpg)
Poco was a band formed in the late '60s by Richie Furay after Buffalo Springfield called it quits. While they have created some well known songs ("Crazy Love", "Heart of the Night", etc) the band was also a hotbed for artists on their way to successful careers. Artists like Jim Messina ( Loggins and Messina ), Randy Meisner ( Eagles ), Timothy B. Schmit (Eagles) all did stints with the band. Poco is known for the softer side of music with heavy and deep harmonies. If you listen to their catalog which has covered more than three [...]

Y'all should know how much I love Soul Asylum , at least the Soul Asylum who existed from roughly 1986-90. I've written about this era of the band here , here , here , and mmm lemme see oh yes, here . And I am well aware that beginning with Grave Dancer's Union in 1992, the law of diminishing returns enters the picture. However, during the hallowed quatrain of dominance, they were damn near the perfect rock band. Their live shows are deservedly legendary, but the secret weapon turned out [...]
