Words by Brendan It's 2009. My burgeoning interest in indie music leads me all over the internet and, in particular, to eMusic . I quasi-randomly click through the "Similar Artists" links on every page, sampling songs and buying what I like. I come across a band with the somewhat odd but intriguing name of Buildings Breeding . I stream a few samples and am immediately hooked. I buy the only album available there, and later order it on vinyl from their website because it's that good. Mere months later, the band [...]

This one has a lot of background behind it. From what I've gathered, frontman and founder Chris Larsen started the band as a way to reach out to his girlfriend (now band mate co-vocalist Melanie Glover) while she was abroad. Larsen created Buildings Breeding as a "fake" band which included its very own MySpace page. Essentially, a way for Larsen to keep in touch with Glover. Make believe or not, the "bands" music drew attention from Glover and many others. To take it even further on the absurd side, as a joke, Larsen sent his songs out to Mushpot Records [...]

A friend asked if I was going to do a "Best of '08" list and I told him that I don't usually do these things. For one thing, I tend to post a lot of music that is either pop, mainstream or more than a year old. So rather than calling it a best of '08, I'm calling this the accurately and glamourously named "Rodeo Round-up of Favorite Songs Posted This Year Period." (What's that? Why the "period"? Ummm, it's called an 'Element of Style.' Duh , Vance. Look it up. ) I'd [...]

Buildings Breeding was never meant to be a real band. Their songs were created as a bunch of love letters Christapher Larsen made for Melanie Glover while she was overseas. Buildings Breeding settled in as a fake myspace.com band from Chicago featuring four members — all alias for Larsen. With great response, the band finally took its live form in April 2006 in Davis, California with Chris Larsen (vocals, guitar), Melanie Glover (drums, vocals), Evan Hart (guitar) and Chris Vogel (bass), who later joined in August 2007. Playing gigs locally for a short time before gaining national attention, [...]
Yay, America. It's voting day, so please, please, please get out and make sure that you voice is heard this time. I don't want to hear that "the system is corrupt" or that...

I got an email release the other day that started: "The members of Sacramento/Davis-based band Buildings Breeding understand that times are tough. With the economy pressing hard on music-lovers everywhere, the band has decided to release its second full-length for free online-only." I thought that was really nice of them. Download it from their website, www.buildingsbreeding.com , starting today. It's a 13 tracks- which I'd call an album, but they call an EP- full of the Sacramento, California band's airy, light pop music. The band started as a mock myspace page [...]

Our friends from Sacramento-based band Buildings Breeding are well aware that times are tough. With the economy crunching the wallets of music-lovers across the country, the band has made the decision to release its sophomore effort as a completely free download on its website tomorrow. The album was recorded at Tiny Telephone Studio (John Vanderslice) and at the band's home studio. Two songs on the album, "Lowest Light" and "Rushing Red" , are from the EP, Colors Bent to Seasons , and were produced and recorded by Aaron Prellwitz (producer, [...]

Okay, this week's Friday Mixtape is a little short, and I haven't even listened to all the tracks on it yet. In fact, I can't really listen to much of anything right now, as I've got the killer cold from hell that simply won't quit. My sinuses and ears are all out of whack, and it's only because I'm all napped-out that I even got around to doing the mixtape tonight. So, download, listen, and let me know how off my ears really are in the comments. I'm going back to bed now. Tracklisting: [...]

I was recently contacted by Christapher Larsen from Chicago's Buildings Breeding . The band have been shopping their sophmore effort, A Great Divorce , to labels and wanted to share a few songs from it with you. Be kind and let them know what you think about them! There is no official release date for the effort at the moment, but they're currently hoping it will be out this April. For those unfamiliar with the band, we interviewed Chris shortly before the release of their debut. Click here to check it [...]

I ran into some road blocks the last few days...It's been good fun. While trying to point my blog*spot URL to my custom domain I got an unfriendly error message that might as well have said, "Go to Jail. Move directly to Jail. Do not pass "Go" Do not collect $200". Actually the real message says something like, "There is another blog hosted at this address" or something around those lines, the thing is there is nothing else at that address and I told Blogger that but Blogger didn't care so Mr. Pip came to the rescue and is trying [...]

Slow, methodical, and downright breezy is what first hooked me onto the Davis, California band Buildings Breeding. But interesting lyrics and a propensity to experiment kept them in the fold. With one full-length out and a new outtakes EP dropping early in March, there's plenty for you to wrap your head around. Resting somewhere between Dntel and Brightblack, I present to you a great track by Buildings Breeding. ::: Buildings Breeding - Sitting Duck You can order their albums here . I ran across these guys a few weeks back via an email. I came into the station that very day and noticed that it was also sitting on the shelf begging for a bit of airplay. Buildings Breeding's claim to fame up to this point is that they really had no intention of being a band, much less a good one. Guitarist Chris Larsen uploaded some tunes to MySpace for his girlfriend that he had written which got things going. The result was a completely accidental domino effect that resulted in a [...]

California is known for a lot more than meets the eye... and while it may be hard to see through the smog or to look at anything besides really really ridiculously good-looking people, once you get past the glare you'll discover a number of great underground scenes--from hip-hop to surf rock to 70's-style punk--all supporting what made California great before the glitz and glamour: DIY. Buildings Breeding , an indie rock/pop 4-piece from Davis, CA, originally began as somewhat of a joke. Singer/guitarist/bassist Chris Larsen created "Buildings Breeding" as a joke band on [...]

Buildings Breeding began life as a completely fake band, the band was actually started as a joke by founder Chris Larsen . That's right, a fake. He had a fake MySpace page, fake members...even fake songs. There was only one problem, the fake songs were actually 'really' good (yes, pun intended). So good in fact that one of the fake members, a very real Melanie Glover , decided to join up and make the band a reality. Their new album is available directly from their label, Mushpot Records.
