Bay Area art-rockers SUNBEAM RD have recently released a couple of very impressive tracks on their official bandcamp page . These new tunes are filled with highly dreamy harmonies, off-kilter guitar lines and a soothing atmosphere not unlike their usual material. But I'm sensing a more structured SUNBEAM than before and I like what I hear. You can catch SUNBEAM RD at SF's Cafe Du Nord on January 20th and at The Hub in Sacramento on the 22nd. One of the most reliably entertaining live bands in the Bay Area, Or, the Whale possess that endearing combination of superb musicianship and the ability to cut loose and have fun. The national re-release of Light Poles and Pines earlier this year on Seany Records kicked off a series of tours and country radio success. With a new album completed and awaiting release, we're pleased to present the band's homecoming performance from their recent West Coast tour. [...]

The beauty in the new Audrye Sessions album lies in the way in which it navigates dynamics, songwriting, and energy. Even in its mellower moments, their debut album brims with a subdued tension that is only relieved by explosive energy. The way in which Ryan Karazija and his cohorts navigate the dichotomy between soothing lullaby and devastating intensity within song form (in the micro) and the overall album (in the macro) expresses a compositional maturity that belies the "rock" format within which they are categorized. You can catch Audrye Sessions on [...]

Words and Photos by: Nicole L. Browner From Monument to Masses means so much to a lot of people, and this is something easy to forget when a band goes on a prolonged hiatus. I still listen to The Impossible Leap once or twice a week, dwelling in the memories of their shows, which always left me feeling reborn. Last night Bottom of the Hill sold out by the time doors opened, and frequent audience shouts for the headliners during first two bands made it clear that excitement was [...]

After meeting Jonny Latimer of both the Aimless Never Miss and Built for the Sea at the Bottom of the Hill, I'd been looking forward to this show all week. First off, it was at Cafe du Nord , which happens to be one of my favorite venues in the city. It feels like it belongs in the television show True Blood alongside the vampire bar Fangtasia . Antique couches line the rear of the club and a deep scarlet red is seen literally everywhere. The first step, well, she's a doozy no doubt [...]

Our Noise Pop 2009 coverage is ramping up here over the next few weeks, and some recent announcements definitely merit your attention: First, the festival's schedule has been updated again, with a bunch of great local bands added to the lineup, including David Dondero , Built For The Sea , Mike Relm , Wallpaper. and more. Two free shows aren't on the calendar yet, but both look pretty great: - The opening night party with Deerhunter and Lilofee [...]

Yet again the folks at CreativemindsSF , a grassroots, artist-run art and music promotion project, are bringing together some fantastic local bands at the Rickshaw Stop this Thursday. Loquat , Built for the Sea , Winter's Fall and DF Tram will perform. In a somewhat random but still prestigious occurrence, Loquat was recently featured on the Victoria's Secret Pink website , alongside Bloc Party, The Kaiser [...]

Nothing feels like a sensual dose of nonsensical but quirky music. Just a rundown of some good-old-nothing-to-be-afraid- of music. I just noticed that I kinda fancy lengthy and stretched adjective lines. Oh well. Enjoy. Ben Folds - Effington ( my Last Song Syndrome ) Built for the Sea - Baby, It's Cold Outside Animal Collective - Fireworks Andrew Bird - Oh No! There you have it. Just in case you want my opinion. Andrew Bird got me.

I love this band. They are one of the few whose music (name also) speaks for itself. Take heed that they are dubbed as a non-pretentious mellow rock band. I swear I don't sugarcoat my posts so you got to take my word when I say this band makes dreamy and captivating music that will haunt you senseless. Be sure also to listen to their remarkable cover of 'Baby Its Cold Outside'. Built For The Sea Built for the Sea's sound can be described as dreamy indie pop music with Rose's beautiful, haunting vocals [...]

Sigur Rós at the Greek Theatre I have obviously been busy this week and will be for the coming week. But my shortage in lengthly posts and descriptions of new and upcoming bands will continue in the coming month. I'm just taking a short break (or holiday, for that matter). Anyway, there certainly is no shortage of fantastic shows in the Bay Area this week. I'll be attending a handful but it would behoove you to try to see at least one of these this week... (cough) Girl Talk (cough). Concert Pictures - [...]

If you're looking for a taste of what's up and coming on the local music scene, Slim's is your spot this Thursday night: Tartufi , Built For The Sea , and Low Red Land will all be playing, and all releasing new discs - on the same night! All three bands definitely seem to fall pretty firmly into the "atmospheric indie rock" department, but we were pleasantly surprised by the fact that each seems to be pretty firmly defining their own flavor. Low Red Land has some nice fuzzy distortion [...]

Hypnotist, the second track off Built for the Sea's debut self-titled album was released in November of 2006. It invitingly appeals for one to jump into the lush ethereal dream-pop world seemingly created effortlessly by this San Francisco based indie rock five piece. BFTS actually have a new EP (Mise en Scene) that is officially releasing on 18th up in San Francisco at Slim's, but since this is an introduction to the network, lets dip into the earlier material first. You may recognize Long Beach rooted singer Lia Rose (as pictured from her March show in [...]

when we spoke with built for the sea recently, band leader lia rose mentioned they had recently finished up work on a new five-song ep, mise en scene . the album will be self-released and available beginning 18 september and we're happy to have the terrific first single (along with the cover art, at right) available here for download. get it while it's hot: built for the sea - the (re)adjust the ep release will [...]

lia rose , the singer & songwriter and founding member of the excellent local independent rock quartet built for the sea , recently, graciously, agreed to answer a few questions for us while she and the band finish up a brand new ep and prep for a tour. you can see lia and the rest of the band live and in living color for yourselves at their next show , 30 august, at bottom of the hill. anyone's guess: what's your favorite song to play live? built for [...]
