I should probably just mention up front that I already had a ticket to see Archers of Loaf before I got assigned to cover it for The Bay Bridged and hence had a press badge to get me in. So if you've come here for an impartial review, you're shit out of luck. Seriously though, there are few joys in life that compare to an Archers of Loaf show. I saw them last September when they played the Great American Music Hall, and was blown away. They played more of the old-school [...]
Deerhunter's prolific musical genius, Bradford Cox, has been one of our favorite 'indie' musicians for years. In addition to his work on his mothership, that is Deerhunter, Cox has lots of other music projects and collaborations, including the most popular of them all - his solo work under the moniker Atlas Sound, a project that [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

Friday evening was a mad house. Getting into the station wasn't the issue, as I expect it will be in the coming weeks now that winter is upon us; it was the transition. Transitioning from one on-air personality to another is a bit nerve-wracking. The quarters are cramped, the mic is hot, and you have to do your best not to step on their toes as they wrap their show and you begin yours. And when it's time to fly, you have to remember which buttons should be lit and which ones shouldn't. After the [...]

Built Like Alaska is, slowly but surely, changing what many classify as indie rock, putting its owncaptivating spin on the genre itself. After band-member adjustments and other rough patches, the group finally put together and tweaked third album In Troubled Times, out November 8 via Future Farmer Recordings. Neil Jackson contemplates the ever evasive topic [...]

Woke up Saturday morning and to my pleasure surveyed Built Like Alaska's upcoming album, In Troubled Times . The album comes out November 8th and you can get your own ideas about the record with a listen to "John Henry" and "Antique Love" . http://www.builtlikealaskaband .com http://www.futurefarmer.com/

Six years is how long it has been since we've heard anything from coastal rural California band Built Like Alaska gave us their sophomore release Autumnland . In that time, the band has had plenty of member changes, recreating - in a way - their identity. In Troubled Times... is Built Like Alaska's third release and it finds the band rejuvenated and focused on creating an album packed with pop greatness occasionally thwarted by rock ferociousness. Built Like Alaska did the [...]

Oakdale, CA's Built Like Alaska is ready to unleash their newest album, In Troubled Times , November 8 on the Future Farmer label. The first taste of that record is the track "Antique Love." There's a sort of after-hours indie-rock feel here that has a Pacific Northwest folk vein running through it. I'm also struck by the subtle nods to 90's indie-pop - the song shows a nice blend of influences without overtly copying anything. This is my first taste of Built Like Alaska, but based on "Antique Love" I think their record could be [...]

MP3: Built Like Alaska - Antique Love Built Like Alaska op Myspace [...]

When you're in the business of discovering and exposing jazzy new tunes and bands, whether it be for yourself or for throngs of adoring fans and readers, you find that far too often groups that you develop an affinity for will suddenly just fade away and disappear. For many years, I've had to lump the band Built Like Alaska into that categorization. My first introduction to the Oakdale, California based band took place in 2005 after having come across them following the release of their album Autumnland , a record that made it's way satisfyingly through my [...]

From busy bass lines to trippy Ben Folds look-a-likes, this week's Freeloader Friday is full of 5. Count them, 5—pretty cool MP3s from very different bands.

Why is it that it's your favorite bands that are always the least prolific, yet bands like Nickelback can crank out crappy record after crappy record year in and year out? A new song from the band Built Like Alaska got me thinking this very question. Variations on this question include: why do the best bands inevitably wind up on labels that promptly go out of business, why are the best bands so much less well known than dance music remix crap, and why do the best bands always split up? I've been [...]
If you've read this blog from the beginning (sometime in 2004) you know of my love for the SF band Built Like Alaska . I'll follow them anywhere, whether they're into noisy ephemeral rock (like Mercury Rev) or folksy, earth-mother jams I'm a 100% behind this band. It's been three years since 2004's Future Farmer release Autumnland and the band is looking to self release a 2 disc set sometime mid-winter. They're also entertaining offers from indie labels. Since I'm pretty sure Blitzen Trapper's been signed up, I'd go as far as to say they're [...]
(Editors note: I've probably written this exact same sentence once or twice before. It's hard not to repeat yourself after almost 3 years of once-a-day posts so forgive me if you've heard it before.) I'm only truly excited to receive releases in the mail from a small handful of labels (even given the fact that I get them all for free). I won't list them here in case I piss anyone off, but I will say that the small indie label Jackpine Social Club is tops on that list. The reasons for [...]
