When I sometimes look back at my earliest writing on music, I cringe. I tended to talk about things in absolutes and superlatives. Albums were often 'an album of the year', even if they were discussed in February. Indeed, almost everything was the best/ the most/ the ______est of its genre or kind. I was fond of adjectives too, and many nouns died in that tragic circumstance, the multi-adjective pile-up . "It's ugly Doc. The album review didn't stand a chance. Looks like another case of adjective asphyxiation. They say was the word 'ethereal' that [...]

While they won't have a new studio album out until next year, Built to Spill still plan on soaking up the best parts of 2012 with tour dates across the summer and into the fall. The Boise indie rockers will patrol the East coast in late June, appear at Quincy, CA's High Sierra Music Festival in July, and recollect in late August. Pretty erratic itinerary thus far, so take a peep below. Then stream a recent performance of "The Plan" at this year's South by Southwest shortly after. Built to Spill 2012 [...]
On this edition of Audiography, we feature reviews of the latest releases by former White Stripe Jack White, Spencer Krug's experimental project Moonface, a remix of Battles' Gloss Drop , and the bass-pushing production of Bassnectar. We also include my conversation with Built to Spill's frontman Doug Martsch. I caught up with him as he and his band were preparing for a week-long stint at Austin's 2012 South by Southwest Festival. The two of us talked about the band beginning work on their latest album and looked over the history of Built to Spill, including the band's [...]

I worship at the church of karaoke. The parishoners and I are there to confess and meditate, to feel welcomed by a community, to hear a good sermon or two, to perchance see someone speak in tongues and have the words of the Lord Bon Jovi be channeled through a mere mortal. And, of course, to have some drinks and venture to make complete fools out of ourselves. Karaoke exists in a vacuum of taste, where anomalies and exceptions always seem to arise and mess with my preconceptions. Maybe, like me, this is the only time you can really tolerate a Billy [...]
I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that last night I was anxiously watching Twitter for teasers and refreshing Hopscotch's homepage until midnight, when Hopscotch 20122s lineup was released. I read out loud the 175 bands to my roommates with the occasional (and frequent) yelps of joy. Headliners this year include The Roots, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Built to Spill (one of my personal favorite bands), Yo La Tengo, Liars, Sunn O))), and Zola Jesus. Some others that I'm excited about are Thee Oh Sees, Wye Oak, Deerhoof, The Mountain Goats, Versus, Exitmusix, Ducktails, Samantha [...]

A couple years ago, Built To Spill bassist Brett Nelson launched the Electronic Anthology Project , a passion project that reimagined Built To Spill's songs through the aesthetic of New Wave bands like Talk Talk and Men Without Hats. The record contained all new vocal tracks from Built To Spill frontman Doug Martsch. Now, The Electronic Anthology Project of Dinosaur Jr. , a collection of reinterpreted Dinosaur Jr. tracks, and yeah, Nelson got J. Mascis to record some new vox for that, too. This Nelson fellow is a go-getter, seems like. We've got the full thing, which features [...]

I've been digging through my old records lately and I can't believe just how awesome music was between 2003 and 2007. This awesomeness has inspired a new series, The Throwback Mix Series , which will be a six or seven installment set of mixes each containing 20 songs that I loved during that time span - and each mix will be completely rad. Spread the word and be sure to support the artists you enjoy. Neutral Milk Hotel - "Holland, 1945" [...]
In support of their upcoming new album Whistle Tips out tomorrow on Ernest Jenning Record Co., New York-based infectious pop quartet Dinosaur Feathers have premiered a stream of their entire forthcoming release exclusively at Spin.com. In addition, Dinosaur Feathers are currently wrapping up their ongoing full US tour, which saw ...

photos and words by Alex Crick It's exactly 505 miles from the KEXP studios to the heart of downtown Boise and that's exactly how far I traveled to catch the inaugural year of Treefort Music Fest . Featuring 138 bands from the Northwest and beyond Treefort Fest bills itself as a new and emerging artist festival, which it was in every way. After arriving in Boise late Friday afternoon, about a day and a half after the festival had already begun, I caught my first performance with Sister Crayon . [...]
Brooklyn quartet Dinosaur Feathers have debuted a new track, "Beatcha," from their upcoming album Whistle Tips, out on April 10 on Ernest Jenning Records (pre-order it on iTunes now!). The band is currently on a tour of the U.S. with Built To Spill, Battles, Of Montreal and many others. With the release of Whistle Tips, ...

The Panic Manual is a model of inefficiency. Case in point: the last day of our annual trek to Austin found the entire four man Panic Manual crew (2 writers and 2 photographers) stationed at Cedar Street Courtyard to check out Built To Spill's final set of the week. A bit redundant of us perhaps, especially considering that only two of us had any real familiarity with the band, but it's a cool little venue and they're a great band, so why not? And so, after the bartender mixed us perhaps the best mojito I've ever [...]

Goodbye SXSW Let's face it: South by Southwest is exhausting. 4 days of 15-hour live music orgies is enough to enervate even the spryest of striplings, particularly when accompanied by a diet composed solely of barley and hops. Our last day at SXSW began on the slow side, with a trip out to legendary BBQ castle Salt Lick , where this particular editor ordered the "all you can eat" plate, and where the FP staff learned that I cannot in fact eat very much. But, while our start was slow, our finish was fast and [...]
This is a very packed picture post. But it's SXSW...what did you expect? So here's a fraction of a fraction of all the musicians, madness, and maniacs from SXSW 2012.
