It's really funny that this track popped up in our inbox the other day, just a night after I was talking to our friend Marcus about the lack of credit given to the Idaho scene. In 2011 the scene hit big with Youth Lagoon , and the state is the home to Built to Spil l, who took out the band Finn Riggins for several tours. This track from Finn Riggins definitely has a nice little groove to it, and it'll feature on the band's Benchwarmers EP [...]

Built to Spill played The Fillmore last night to a crowd that sold-out the venue months and months ago for 2012′s Noise Pop Festival. Sharing the stage with openers Sister Crayon, frontman Doug Martsch (read our interview with Doug Martsch) and his bandmates played an eclectic and fulfilling set, while keeping the crowd enthralled at all times. Forming in 1992, the group released their debut album Ultimate Alternative Waters in 1993. Just a year later, Doug Martsch signed to Warner Bros. The deal was a rare one: Built To Spill kept creative control. The group's adored sound of crunchy guitar [...]
Video: Vimeo - YouTube Photos: Flickr Audio: zip download - right click, save as I am rather embarrassed to confess that we recorded this session absolutely bloody ages ago. First the Festival, then the mixes, then intervening sessions, and finally just the sheer amount of time these take to edit managed to delay things. But now, finally, at long, long last here it is: the Kid Canaveral Toad Session. This was another relatively [...]

In honor of SXSW 2012, we'll be doing our own SXSW Advent calendar, of sorts.

Bizarro world continues to expand , this time it involves J Mascis and Built to Spill bassist Brett Nelson's Electronic Anthology Project. As Pitchfork reports , the two are currently working together to rework past Dinosaur Jr. anthems into synth-pop tracks. Try and swallow that one for a second...okay, let's continue. Due out Record Store Day (ahem, April 21st), the nine-track project will receive a limited-edition run of 500 purple vinyl records, to be followed with a proper digital, CD, and vinyl release later. For a first taste of the mayhem, head [...]

J Mascis recording electro-pop takes of old material with Built to Spill.

On Doug Martsch and Brett Nelson's inaugural release as the Electronic Anthology Project , the Built to Spill duo took on music by their own band, re-recording popular BTS tunes in an '80s electro-pop style. The result was both an oddly appealing experiment and entertaining way to deconstruct the guitar-driven work for which they're better known. Now EAP is back with perhaps the best indie-rock guitarist ever in tow: J Mascis and Nelson have teamed up to electrify the Dinosaur Jr. catalog with Mascis providing lead vocals on a new set due out April 21 for Record Store Day. [...]
We thought Treefort's initial line-up announcement gave enough compelling reasons to make the road trip to Boise. But the upstart music fest has made four more line-up announcements since then giving us even more reasons to be planning a visit to Idaho. In addition to Pickwick, Lemolo, Built to Spill, Of Monteral and WHY? the [...]

Brooklyn experimental pop outfit Dinosaur Feathers released its debut LP, Fantasy Memorial , in 2009. At the time, the album's tropical vibe and sunny instrumentation were right at home amongst similar-sounding acts also on the rise. Since then, the group has toured relentlessly and reconfigured their own sensibilities for their latest LP, Whistle Tips , due out April 10th via Ernest Jenning. According to press for the LP, the band haven't left the beach-esque sound behind entirely. Rather, they've infused it with influences from The Soft Boys, The Olivia Tremor Control, XTC, and Paul [...]
![[Introducing] – Family Lumber](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4002757_lg.jpg)
Tweet Family Lumber will immediately bring to mind Built To Spill (and in fact, they have opened for them before), Death Cab For Cutie and the like. What is surprising when listening to a band that is a reminder of so many Ghosts of Indie Rock Past is that it's not only good, but refreshing. Family Lumber fits right in with its musical peers, but pitches a juggernaut that more than stands on its own [...]
