Labor day weekend as i was driving through the mountains, I pulled a random BTS live show out from my collection of bajillions and found a real gem. So, here it is for you: Built To Spill 1999-07-01 Bahnhof Langendreer Bochum, Germany 01. The Plan [5:26] 02. Temporarily Blind [4:59] 03. Stop The Show [4:44] 04. In The Morning [3:15] 05. [...]

One of the things you have to realize when you're leaving a place is that you won't see some of the things you like anymore. It's pretty sad when you think about it. Though there are many things I came to loathe about Wilkes-Barre, I didn't realize how many subtle, nice things there were. I do not mean a majority of the public, the stupid government projects, or the thriving commercial industry. I mean small, subtle things, like individuals or architecture. Sometimes you have to search to find beauty in things. I believe that if I wasn't left alone so [...]

Pendant ce temps, à Vera Cruz, Built To Spill continuent à écrire des morceaux uniques. Qui charment les pires serpents de l'indé. Achetez le . Built To Spill - They Got Away

This is big news. Quite possibly the finest band in the history of rockdom (well in my opinion anyway) is touring Australia for the first time. Although my mind is all consumed with things Krug/Boeckner at the moment I haven't forgotten my musical roots. This Idaho band has created music that is dear and near to my heart. Doug Martsch can wield a guitar like no other. Oh, and that voice and those melodies and those lyrics of heart and beauty. I could go on forever, I really could. I was fortunate enough to see them live in the USA [...]

I love yappin' on about music with a few drinks at 3 or 4 in the morning. To others, I must sound like a braying megaphone repeating the words 'guided by voices' until sunrise, but from my side its a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Hah, I remember my mother used to tell me to be quiet at night, because my voice 'carries'. Well it definitely 'carries' when Mr Tuborg and Mr ipod are on the agenda. But its a great moment late at night, when the ipod is jacked into a stereo and the enthusiasm comes spilling out all over the [...]

It's been a while since I've done a new music post, so I've got a bunch of great new tracks to discuss. Let's jump right into it. Rogue Wave Asleep at Heaven's Gate is coming out September 18, buy it at Insound and get a free 7" Two new songs have been released freom the new album and to me, they sound very little like [...]

Built to Spill's sole live album, 2000's Live, achieved what a truly good live album is supposed to do: it excelled in bringing another dimension to the songs, and in the process, improved upon them. No stranger to extreme guitar wrangling, Doug Martsch lets his classic rock loving, freak flag fly, laying waste [...]
This week I wanted to do more of a theme, so I picked some of my favorite guitar heavy songs. Hope you enjoy them as much as I do. Kings Of Leon - Knocked Up Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - American X Built To Spill - Mess With Time Explosions in the Sky - Welcome, Ghosts Panda Bear - Good Girl / Carrots The Mars Volta - L'Via L'Viaquez John Butler Trio - Old Man (Live From 9:30 [...]

"Broken Chairs" by Built to Spill which clocks in at 8:40 This song doesn't belong here. It's an impostor. A charlatan - a pretender. A fraudster. The Ferdinand Waldo Demara of long songs. A faker, like... like Faker . Like one of those false coral snakes that gets by in life by fooling the world into thinking it's dangerous. "Ohh look at me, I'm making people frightened! I'm the killer snake, from deadly land, in a red, yellow, and black house on [...]

I was poking around the internet and found NME's list of the 50 greatest indie anthems ever. It's not a bad list, a little heavy on the Oasis maybe and I'm not sure what definition of "indie" they're using but an ok list nonetheless. Here are their top ten: 1.Oasis - 'Live Forever' 2. Nirvana - 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' 3. Pulp - 'Common People' 4. The Smiths - 'There Is A Light That Never Goes Out' 5. The Libertines - 'Don't Look Back Into The Sun' 6. The Libertines - 'Time [...]

Where do you call home? A humble little dorm room in New Haven, Connecticut. What was the first concert you attended? Self's 2005 farewell show in Nashville, Tennessee. I was four years under the age limit at the time and managed to sneak into the "Fort Knox" of Nashville venues (the Exit/In) by pretending to be the bass player for one of the opening acts. I also just had my first kiss with my first girlfriend a couple hours prior; it was a good day. [...]
Two things people never want to hear you talk about are what you dreamt last night and the size of an insect that you killed. Take for example the other day. I was telling my mom about this flying mutant roach creature I killed that was scaring the shit out of me in my mom's lobby. This was one of those huge water bug/cockroach things that can fly. If you don't live in a big metropolis you might not know what I'm talking about, but trust me, these suckers are freak-a-leeky. I was like, "Jeez Louise, that thing was huge." [...]

I'm about to hop in my car and drive to Las Vegas for the weekend. There will be no update tomorrow to this site, and maybe not on Sunday, depending on what time I return and how exhausted I am. Thankfully, by next week, things should return to normal around here. Lots of exciting concerts coming up, maybe another "Adventures in Dating" story, and my good friend Sam recommended a new theme/series that I am going to undertake as soon as I can. It's sure to be hilarious. That said, here's a brief Friday Top Ten. This is [...]
To kick off my live review posts on IA, I will be starting with the Built To Spill show at the 9:30 Club a couple of Sundays ago. The Stay Lows This show kicked off my run of 4 shows in 7 days, so I was pretty excited. The 9:30 Club isn't as personal as Black Cat is and the drinks cost more, but it fits more people and [...]

From "Alight Trio" by Betsy Popp "Listen, Listen" by THE MERRY-GO-ROUND: Thanks to an anonymous response to my previous post on Emitt Rhodes, I now have a few extra Rhodes song in my digital collection, including a handful of songs from Rhodes pre-solo career band, The Merry-Go-Round. "Listen, Listen" is one of those new (to me) songs, and it's a rocking nugget of California pop via filtered through the Beatles (Rhodes never denied his love for the Beatles in interviews). "I Am Not Willing" by MOBY GRAPE [...]
Heinrich Manoeuvre – Interpol When I heard this song, it got my hopes up for Interpol's upcoming album. However after listening to the whole thing, I'm saddened to report that it's the only song that really sticks out. Hopefully time will change this. Vitriol – Bluejuice Bluejuice are right up there on my list of bands I wanna see live. Their music is a blend of hip-hop and rock, but more importantly I'd say it's a lot of fun. I've heard reports that they're one of Sydney's most [...]
Although it does not officially drop until late August, the New Pornographers fourth LP, Challengers, has been a pretty constant jam around these parts the past few weeks. If your into indie-pop, you are most definitely already a rabid New Pornos fan, if not, well, you might want to get on that. Like, quick. Over [...]
