Frank Yang When we left off yesterday , I was biking furiously across town to get from The Rivoli to The Phoenix for Archers Of Loaf . So why not roll this show into the festival coverage? Well, although some wristbands were granted admission and the premiere of the What Did You Expect? live Archers doc was one of the big gets of the NXNE film festival, this show wasn't technically part of the festival and I am, if nothing else, a stickler for these sorts of things. [...]
The best thing I've seen all year. Interviews with Isaac Brock, Eric Judy, Jeremiah Green, Dann Gallucci, Doug Martsch, Calvin Johnson, Phil Ek, Rich Jensen, Chris Takino, Scott Swayze, Elliott Smith, and Pat Graham. To say that the first two Modest Mouse records changed my life would be an understatement. I've poured over those lyrics, sang along (including an impersonation of Isaac's lisp), confused myself with the time signature of "Dramamine," and used both albums as a soundtrack to a cross-country driving adventure. I am still enamored with these two albums, and the thesis of [...]

Although their eighth studio LP isn't due out until 2013, Built to Spill hit the road this week for a block of dates that takes them into the fall. Technically, they'll still be supporting their 2009 effort, There Is No Enemy , but with these Boise rockers, we're bound to hear some deep cuts. And for the band's die-hard fans - and really, Built to Spill is the kind of band that only seems to have die-hard fans-that's an exciting prospect. Lately, the band's more recent gigs have shown a healthy [...]

In my opinion, indie rock was at it's prime in the '90s with bands like Pavement , Dinosaur Jr. , Built To Spill , and other fuzzy, distorted musicians. That is why I was psyched to see a new release from Chapel Hill rockers, Superchunk , whose last album, 20102s Majesty Shredding proved that lo-fi was still alive and well. Superchunk 's newest single, the seasonally pertinent "This Summer" is filled with fuzzy guitar [...]

For over 20 years, Doug Martsch has carved out his trademark blend of indie rock, serving as guitarist for Treepeople in the late '80s and eventually as frontman for the now iconic Built to Spill . With seven full-lengths to date, Martsch & Co. remain strong, and next week, the Boise rockers hit the road for yet another sprawling tour. Not too long ago, Consequence of Sound had a chance to catch up with Martsch, who offered his two cents on the band's forthcoming eighth studio LP, how he once put together an obscure reggae cover [...]

Dos nuevos libros: "Big Day Coming: Yo La Tengo and the Rise of Indie Rock" , de Jesse Jarnow, y "Too High to Die: Meet the Meat Puppets" , de Greg Prato, saldrán a la venta este verano.

Some sad news as of last week. It would appear that my lady friend's car is on it's last legs. Before we go out and get a new vehicle I thought it would be respectful to post a few of my favourite car-related songs. You did well ole girl. Enjoy. Free mp3: Arcade Fire - Keep The Car Running [...]

When I sometimes look back at my earliest writing on music, I cringe. I tended to talk about things in absolutes and superlatives. Albums were often 'an album of the year', even if they were discussed in February. Indeed, almost everything was the best/ the most/ the ______est of its genre or kind. I was fond of adjectives too, and many nouns died in that tragic circumstance, the multi-adjective pile-up . "It's ugly Doc. The album review didn't stand a chance. Looks like another case of adjective asphyxiation. They say it was the word 'ethereal' [...]

While they won't have a new studio album out until next year, Built to Spill still plan on soaking up the best parts of 2012 with tour dates across the summer and into the fall. The Boise indie rockers will patrol the East coast in late June, appear at Quincy, CA's High Sierra Music Festival in July, and recollect in late August. Pretty erratic itinerary thus far, so take a peep below. Then stream a recent performance of "The Plan" at this year's South by Southwest shortly after. Built to Spill 2012 [...]
On this edition of Audiography, we feature reviews of the latest releases by former White Stripe Jack White, Spencer Krug’s experimental project Moonface, a remix of Battles' Gloss Drop , and the bass-pushing production of Bassnectar. We also include my conversation with Built to Spill's frontman Doug Martsch. I caught up with him as he and his band were preparing for a week-long stint at Austin's 2012 South by Southwest Festival. The two of us talked about the band beginning work on their latest album and looked over the history of Built to Spill, including the band's [...]

I worship at the church of karaoke. The parishoners and I are there to confess and meditate, to feel welcomed by a community, to hear a good sermon or two, to perchance see someone speak in tongues and have the words of the Lord Bon Jovi be channeled through a mere mortal. And, of course, to have some drinks and venture to make complete fools out of ourselves. Karaoke exists in a vacuum of taste, where anomalies and exceptions always seem to arise and mess with my preconceptions. Maybe, like me, this is the only time you can really tolerate a Billy [...]
