Toward the end of Ra Ra Riot's 75-minute set at Celebrate Brooklyn, an exhuberant Wes Miles hopped off the stage and went from stage right to stage left, touching the hands of thrilled fans, before vaulting over a handrail and doing a lap back to where he started. Although the turnout wasn't as staggering as [...]

It's strike day tomorrow. In celebration I was going to find something strike-related for today's SOTD, but then I remembered that virtually no-one is bothering to make music with even the vaguest of political sentiments, despite the fact that the government is presiding over the wholesale dismantling of the creative industries. Ah well, eh? So instead here is a furious track from Brooklyn duo Buke And Gass . They make an extraordinary amount of noise for two people, apparently thanks to a veritable orgy of footpedals. Through those pedals they play instruments of [...]

Last Friday night, Celebrate Brooklyn began a summer of music and art at Brooklyn's Prospect Park Bandshell with a show from the magical and mysterious Andrew Bird . For the most part, the evening was a huge success. The music was great, the accommodations were great, the sound was even great. That is, if you made it into the amphitheater. If you plan on seeing any music at Prospect Park this summer, I highly suggest you read the following list of suggestions. They will [...]

For anyone who's seen a Ra Ra Riot show, it's almost fact that the six-piece puts a lot of themselves into their stage show. In fact, it's a sight to behold their violinist Rebecca Zeller and cellist Alexandra Lawn rocking out the hardest. So, after some well-deserved rest, the group is bringing back la pasión when they start their latest North American leg. In further support of their fall 2010 release The Orchard , the New York-based indie band will team up with Guster for a two-week run along the East coast in August. Along the way, [...]

In this day and age it's rare that an artist does something truly unique. But that's what you get with Brooklyn duo Buke & Gass, who play The Horseshoe in Toronto tonight opening for tUnE-yArDs. Aron Sanchez and Arone Dyer are the members of the group, currently on Brassland, the label founded by Aaron and Bryce Dessner of The National. What sets the band apart is their instruments. The pair

All of it - philosophically, linguistically, socially, psychologically, phonetically, emotionally- "yes" is a kick-ass word. With it comes acceptance, affirmation, agreement, and allowance. tUnE-yArDs opened their set with lead singer Merril Garbus calling for the the crowd to answer "Do you want to live?", and with nary a cynic to be found, the crowd emphatically replied "YES." On screen, it's hard to convey how genuine this commencement Q&A was. On screen, it's hard to convey how genuine tUnE-yArDs were. Scoffing at Garbus' theatrical demeanor may fit some folks. Just her garb - bright tulle shoulder ornaments and a [...]
Here We Go Magic are set to deliver The January EP on May 10 via Secretly Canadian. Produced by Jen Turner and recorded live to analog tape in a band-built living room studio, the new material was created around the same time as their last full-length, Pigeons . Download a track from the six-song EP, "Hands in the Sky." The band are also touring for two months starting in May, and will be assisted by a rotating cast of bands throughout the dates, including Aroara, Caveman, Citizenship, Porcelain Raft, NT, Bizi Gara, [...]

[photos by Johnny Fried Chicken Boy] Buke and Gass (that's pronounced byeewk and gayse, in case you were wondering) are the exciting new Brooklyn duo of Arone Dyer, on vocals and the buke (a self-modified six-string ukelele) and Aron Sanchez on the gass (a guitar-bass hybrid), all of it blown through homemade amps. The band uses this unorthodox instrumentation to make similarly unorthodox and unexpected rock music, with rapidly shifting tempos and lyrics that range from the lovelorn to the whimsical. The effect, in the live setting, is magical, as you wonder, first, how the hell [...]

Baltimore - I'm going to start a new series. Switching gear is something that engineers do as often as teenagers employ the word "like". And until I find an easy way to visit DC more often, these Be-more monthly will have to suffice. First up, a documentary named after Juan "Doc" Restrepo, who died in Afghanistan on July 22nd 2007, beside a quaint village hut in Korangal Valley. That, is a fairly emotional description, and a good note on which to start a documentary. Yet the film, build [...]

Deerhoof's new album, Deerhoof vs. Evil , is good not great. It sounds a lot like Deerhoof, obviously, but doesn't exactly have that wow factor that made me fall in love with Friend Opportunity back in college. Man, could I have played that on my junior year radio show more? Anyways, they've got a pretty good new album, and they're always fantastic to see. And, shockingly, there's still tickets left to this show, so try to make it out to Europa this Tuesday if you can. MP3: "Must Fight Current" - [...]

Café Video is a nice little café in Ghent and whilst I was still living there, I spent many good times there. With friends or alone, I almost always had a blast. And they have a pretty awesome selection of bands plaing throughout the year (all for free!). My favourite shows from the past year there were She Keeps Bees , Veronica Falls and Wild Nothing . Unfortunately I can't visit as much as I used to as all the shows start late and I wouldn't be able to get home again. But still, [...]
