C Spencer Yeh, better know to some as Burning Star Core, released easily my favorite record of 2008 with Challenger. The album sounds pretty much exactly how the cover art looks. As so many of his confederates in the avant-garde, Carter Thornton puts in work at a handful of projects, each seemingly composed of a lineup of names picked out of a hat. In addition to playing guitar and manipulating electronics, Thornton builds instruments, makes field recordings and organizes sounds. On Sunday I made the long trek from Brooklyn up to Morningside Heights. I knew it was a bad omen when I realized that the 2/3 wasn't running between Manhattan and Brooklyn only once I got to the station. After taking the 4 to the 1 to the 2, I finally made it up to Columbia. I was initially excited for this event, but the rain moved it into the Barnard Gymnasium, which definitely wasn't the most inspiring place to see bands. It also didn't help that being surrounded by college kids made me hyper-reflective about my I-can't-believe-it-was-already -two-years-ago college existence. [...]
