Talib Kweli's Prisoner of Conscious is a play on both his own reputation as a socially conscious rapper and on the term "prisoner of conscience" created by Peter Buchanan in his 1961 London Observer article "The Forgotten Prisoners." That article became a rallying cry of sorts for organizations committed to eliminating imprisonment based on race, religion, or political views. Kweli is well known for his politics, having been a vocal contributor to the Occupy Wall Street movement, while keeping his Twitter followers abreast of his latest social [...]

As the release date for Daft Punk ’s highly anticipated new album Random Access Memories draws nearer, we’re reminded of all those rappers who’ve borrowed the French electro duo’s sounds in the past. (Ten bucks says will.i.am is currently trying to figure out how to make his own version of “Get Lucky” titled “#GetPower”). Some have been more successful uses of their samples than others, but one thing’s for sure: Hip-hop loves Daft Punk. Everyone from Kanye West to Janet Jackson has aped their beats and verses, and we’ve narrowed [...]

Leave it to Busta Rhymes and Pharrell to usher in summer with what will most likely be the biggest twerk t(ch)une of 2013. Off the top Busta spits his best patois for the attention grabbing single, the first of his to be released from Cash Money. No word yet whether an album will be released or not. While Busta Rhymes hasn't exactly been M.I.A., keeping himself heard with a quasi-ubiquitous presence on remixes and mixtape circuit, it has been a long minute since he blessed us with the kind of must-rewind game-changing insanity he used to effortlessly unleash throughout the '902s and much of the '002s. On his latest solo joint "Twerk It", Busta makes a much-appreciated return to the wildly kooky sensibility that made him such a beloved hip hop icon in the years between "Woo Hah! Got You All In Check" and "Touch It", the colorful, Saturday morning cartoon vibe [...]
Ah, our man Sean Kingston — he's had more than a few high-profile friendships and collaborations, from teaming up with Justin Bieber to touring with Kelly Clarkson early in his career to sharing a track with Nicki Minaj . When we sat down with Kingston to play a game of Pop Associated , he had some revealing things to say about his industry colleagues — especially what Wiz Khalifa makes him think of. (It's not surprising, necessarily, but it is pretty funny.) Watch Kingston [...]

In which Busta explores his yard (Jamaican) roots. Is he on E1 records now 'cos that's who sent me this record??
Before Kanye West ever got his hands on "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger," hip-hop all-stars had made use of Daft Punk 's robotic sound. Dating back to 2005, Busta Rhymes found the duo's "Technologic" to sample for the lead single from his album The Big Bang. Produced by Swizz Beats, "Touch It" contains a snippet of the original's vocal, used as the chorus to support Busta's verses. Properly crediting Thomas and Guy-Man, "Touch It" is one of the few noteworthy Daft Punk samplings in hip-hop. You just finished reading Weekend Rewind: Busta Rhymes [...]

Only places like Antarctica and Russia endure things as unreasonable as blizzards in May, right? Wrong. In fact, our favorite midwest metro is expecting another inch of the white stuff today. In case you don't know, today is MAY 3RD. That's not going to stop the fine folks at RSE and Rose Presents though; the guys just dropped the official lineup for their annual festival of hip hop and commerce: Soundset. This is the sixth year in a row Atmosphere's own Rhymesayers Entertainment empire curated the event in which he'll headline and the bill [...]

Busta Rhymes and Pharrell always have the potential to create something interesting and unique when they link up. Busta’s high-energy approach, commanding vocal presence and willingness to take risks blends perfectly with Pharrell’s boundless creativity. “Twerk It” draws from Busta’s Jamaican roots, as he chats, in a throaty patois, things that would make Vanessa Del Rio blush. Pharrell’s production is typically effective, pairing tectonic plate shifting bass with effects straight from an old school 80s cabinet video game. The hook takes the track over the top with a frenetic increase in BPMs and Max Headroom [...]

Busta Rhymes has unveiled the Pharrell-produced 'Twerk It', or '#TwerkIt' if you wanna give a high five to the marketing men. As Rap Radar points out, Rhymes has really tipped his hat to his Jamaican roots on this one.

Here's a collabo that seems straight out of 1998 with Talib Kweli, Busta Rhymes and RZA all coming together on a new track that will appear on Talib's new album which is only a few short days away. And even though "Rocket Ships" appears that it is 15 years too late, the song really brings forth a new sound that will have your head nodding about 20 seconds into it. Good tune that seems like an interesting twist on the Throwback Thursday concept. Stream it below and look for Prisoner of Conscious to drop on [...]
