QC Staff (edited by Chris Carpenter) "A man needs to look, not down, but up to standards set so much above his ordinary self as to make him feel that he is himself spiritually the underdog." - Irving Babbitt The 0's are over. The decade triumphantly ended, and now we're on to the teens. Still, like the end of a complicated relationship, we keep looking back. We figure if we let out [...]
I loved Butane Variations, so naturally I was psyched when I found the following in our mailbox over the weekend: Her dad plays avant-jazz guitar. His mom is a classical flautist. She plays the violin. He plays everything else. Meet New York City's Hollands , a band whose "serious music" chops and theory-head pedigree makes their sidestepping of the garish hipsterdom stalking the streets of the LES [...]
ein ausgezeichneter tipp mal wieder von p. aus b., der uns mit butane variations kommt. einem vierer aus new york. angekündigt wurde mir eine garage-punk-country- formation die "avant-intricate compositions with hooky pop tunes" zu bieten hätte. außerdem: "Sometimes the beat sounds like a tennis match and sometimes the songs wear argyle socks." das musste überprüft werden. mit verve geht es hier schon voran, aber sehnig, wie es sich für eine amerikanische, dem country anbiedernde formation geziemt. banjo, pedal steel, cello, violine, was will das americana herz mehr. und dazu [...]

Forget about the Phillies and The Mets, all the Philly vs New York action you need will be at The M Room in Philadelphia this coming Sunday, September 28th. Come on out and cap off the first official weekend of fall with a grand slam of amazing music featuring New York's I Am The Heat , Philadelphia's Creeping Weeds , New York's Butane Variations and wrapping the night up with Philly's Cheers Elephant . Last night marked another great Sunday night of music at The Manhattan Room (Ed. Note: misnomer - it's located in Philadelphia) thanks to Tom of Bag of Songs and Village Green Productions. The night began with Sheboygan, Wisc. trio Cedarwell, making waves with their beautifully melodic shoegaze evident by opening for national acts such as [...]

If you want to be busy tonight, there are definitely plenty of options. Hopefully your first choice would be attending a fabulous art opening, Society Of Mary, at space 2640 (St. John's) on 27th and St. Paul in Baltimore. It's from 7-10 and features the assemblage work of April Wood, Claes Gabriel, Kelly Walker, Alyssa Dennis, Jed Digney, Outtama Tulachahn, Charlotte Benedetto, Kathy Fahey, Matthew Craft, Liz Kasameyer, Neilie Meyer, Laurent Hrybyk (that's me), David Cunningham, Chris Taylor, and Missing Eyes. There also be some great music there as well including Cakes Of Light, Violet [...]

If you're like me, you enjoy getting in the car to drive to or from work and putting the ipod on shuffle. Just letting the music take you where it's going to take you. Recently, when I do this, a band has me frequently picking my ipod up and saying, "Who is this?" It's Monogold. Then I press repeat. Monogold is a four piece band from New York that plays dramatic indie rock that is seldom heard. The band formed in 2002, when they all met at a NY college, first being called R.U.O.K.. [...]

How many indie bands are there in Brooklyn? Ten thousand? Butane Variations is yet another band churning out tingling guitar songs with a country feel. Their untitled full length and an the simultaneously released outtakes ep Love Five Songs cover a wide range of subjects, including Goldie Hawn, angels and making mix tapes. The Brooklyn sextet is a fine addition for the alt.country crowd, a bit of an afterhours Wilco. Butane Variations and Love Five Songs are released on achord recordings [...]
Today is the second day of Culture Bully's second annual month-long Choose Your Own Giveaway contest where you have the opportunity to choose the prize you want each and every day during the month of September! It is so very nice to have my camera back (even if it doesn't quite compare to that guy's). A couple hours after picking it up at Union Square on Friday, I put it to good use, heading down to the penultimate free show at the Seaport. As has been the case all of August, the crowd was dense, which is really great to see. Although there wasn't any rain for a change, it was a bit muggy and there were some bothersome flies hovering about, but things got better more interesting as the night moved onward. [...]

Brooklyn is the new Athens or Seattle or whatever "city" is producing the hot new sound these days. Here are seven tracks from seven artists from one of the five boroughs. Dawn Landes ~ Young Folks (BJ and J cover) Bishop Allen ~ Click, Click, Click, Click (catchy indie) Joan As Police Woman ~ The Ride (moody indie) Antibalas ~ Beaten Metal (Afro-beat at its finest) Clare & The Reasons ~ Pluto (orchestral-pop at it finest) Marco Mahler [...]

Norah Jones makes an appearance on the new Talib Kweli record, Eardrum . I'm told Norah graces Talib with her vocal stylings on a track called "Soon the New Day." Other guests on the album include Justin Timberlake, Kanye West, KRS-ONE. I'm also told Norah wisely leaves the rapping to the pros. Eardrum drops August 21st. Sirius channel "Jam On" will broadcast the last show from former Phish keyboardist Page McConnel's US Tour live this Saturday July 14th at 11 pm EST, with a replay on July 19th @ 7 pm EST. Previous live broadcasts [...]
I think one of the best effects of the so-called "year indie broke" in 2004 - or whatever bullshit we were supposed to believe about how The Shins and Modest Mouse got really popular - is the acceptance of whimsy into the mainstream. And not that manufactured marketing whimsy that you see in funny commercials, but actual whimsy. People seem more open-minded regarding songs in which there is, say, "dirt on your fries, hope it's right when you die." I could even see, given a big marketing push, a song about that woman from Private Benjamin getting some attention. Butane...
