Field Music Arguably the most under-rated band in the UK at the moment, Field Music are a abnd who continue to just get better and better. They're soon going to release their new album Plumb, as a wee teaser they've posted up the track "A New Town" for free download on Stereogum . [...]

This week you're all getting an extra treat, as I have not one but two cover versions to share with you all. The reason for this being that tonight I am getting to see both Butcher Boy and Adam Stafford playing in the Southside of Glasgow. Now for any of non- weegies out there, the reason I am particularly looking forward to this one is that aside from the Academy, very rarely do we get any good gigs south of the river in sunny Glasgow. In fact I can only really think of the odd gig at [...]

Once again my inbox is over flowing with loads of newsworthy things, which means it's time for another news roundup... First off we have the pretty exciting news that Miaoux Miaoux has announced a very special live show at The Captain's Rest on the 23rd of November. The gig which is being put on to preview his new album, will see Julian (aka Miaoux Miaoux) playing with a full live band, plus some very special guest vocalists., including Profisee, Paul Carlin (Dananananaykroyd /American Men), Kris Ferguson (Mitchell Museum) and Anna Miles (Maple [...]

Butcher Boy make indiepop for grown-ups. Theirs is not a world of sugar overload, hyperactive jangle and reckless references, but rather a mannered and considered series of regretful baroque mini-symphonies. Their third LP Helping Hands is their first away from the quietly brilliant How Does It Feel to Be Loved label, coming out instead on punk bastion Damaged Goods; not quite a move up in the game, but rather a move sideways. Still, it's their first record to have been recorded with the polish that their songs deserve, and the sheen doesn't sacrifice the band's more [...]

For those new to Butcher Boy , they are a seven strong Glaswegian collective who make slightly twee, string laden indie-pop, shaded with sadness, about the pains of growing up and the awkwardness of relationships - all inspired by the city they live in. Remind you of anyone? It's all too easy to dismiss Butcher Boy as Belle & Sebastian copyists. It's also doing them a massive diservice as their third album,'Helping Hands', includes songwriting of the calibre that Stuart Murdoch (himself a fan apparently) has struggled to maintain on recent albums. Instrumental [...]

Following up on the single from last week, Butcher Boy release their third album this week. I've not had a listen to the album yet, so I can't tell you much about how good it is. Instead I'll pass you over to JC of The Vinyl Villain, who got me to pick up the first two Butcher Boy albums through his comments on them previously, who has written about Helping Hands here. JC is calling it his album of the year, and has an interview with Butcher Boy's Alison Eales, and a competition to [...]

Butcher Boy's biography makes Bowlegs expect the archetypal 21 st Century indie band, and gosh, it would be nice if they were. Formed a couple of years before the millennium, in Ayrshire, by singer and writer John Blain Hunt, the macabre moniker has stuck through years of line-up changes and a move to the big city, in this case Glasgow. There, Hunt ran the National Pop League club night. Two well-crafted and lauded albums then saw the band dropped by their label, who ought, frankly, to have known better. New album 'Helping Hands' is their [...]

Butcher Boy emerge from a quiet period with the release of a new single, Imperial, ahead of the release of their third album next week. Both songs are pretty much what you'd expect from the band, a bit twee, jangly and poppy. Also, good stuff, as you'd expect from Butcher Boy by now. Imperial is available on 7" from Damaged Goods , or to download from iTunes , with both formats including non album track Juicy Fruit.

I propose a new –cholia noun. Much like the state of depression (and, in the case of W. Basiski, gorgeous sadness) known as melancholia, the term bucholia needs to be coined. Also able to be spelled bucolia to evoke the root word better, the term shall describe the omnipresent state of pretending to live in the countryside and occasionally pretending to get a few sheep. While the buc(h)olia scene can be summed up as, "Rock with acoustic guitars and mellow vocals, usually punctuated with brushed snares and melodies harkening back to classic melodies and the pre-1980s," [...]

Nearly 12 months after the band finished recording the songs in a Glasgow studio, the much anticipated third LP from Butcher Boy is released by Damaged Goods on Monday 29 August. The previous two albums - Profit In Your Poetry and React Or Die - had been released by How Does [...]
Last night was our second DJing experience, and it was rather a contrast to the first time around. It was all rather last minute, meaning I didn't have five weeks to fret about song choices. It was in a coffee shop instead of a bar with a dance floor, and given the rain and other factors, there wasn't exactly a big turnout. Didn't matter though as I still ended up enjoying myself immensely. Here's what I played: 1. Herman Düne - Tell Me Something I Don't Know 2. Belle & Sebastian - Your Cover's [...]
It's June, so it must mean it's time for the obligatory Indietracks compilation album. Sadly this year it won't be released on CD in an attempt to reduce costs, meaning you'll have to burn your own discs for the long drive up. On the other hand, as it's a download only, you can pay whatever you like for it with all proceeds going to the lovely Midland Railway Centre . Every year they put up with us descending on them, so it's nice to be able to give them a little something back. [...]
When I first started the Peenko blog, I never set out to predominantly focus on Scottish music, it was just something that I found myself getting drawn more and more into as I kept finding a wealth of great music in my own backyard. Butcher Boy were a prime example of a band that made [...]

Butcher Boy were a prime example of a band that made me want to find out more about the Scottish music scene.
