Joel Nicholson, aka Butcher the Bar, is a Manchester-based singer-songwriter who augments a strong melodic sense with a rich instrumental palette. There's everything here from banjo and piano to harmonium, mandolin and toy instruments - the "everything playing" effect of 'Sign Your Name' reminds you of the melodic folkiness of Badly Drawn Boy. The strongest influence, however, appears to be the melancholy introspection of Elliott Smith, especially on the conversationally intimate 'Sin So Sweet' or 'Blood For the Breeze', which echoes Smith's fears: "the world's an ugly face/ a great ghastly place…a vacuum for grace". 'Alpha Street West' [...]

Tweetvaso link At the outset of Butcher the Bar's "Bobby," I thought I was listening to Feist's "I Feel It All." It has a similar feel to it, but it delves into much more hushed tones than Ms. Feist's song does. And I had to go back and look at the blog's past posts because...
I sure do feel bad for Joel Nicholson, aka Butcher the Bar , as he seemingly gets punished by every single thing imaginable. All while trying to belt out the the fantastically sweet "Alpha Street West". Butcher will be supporting DCFC on these following dates: 11-12 - Luxembourg City, Luxembourg - Den Atelier (w/ Death Cab For Cutie) 11-13 - Cologne, Germany - E- Werk (w/ Death Cab For Cutie) 11-16 [...]
It's no surprise that Manchester UK's Butcher the Bar (aka Joel Nicholson) will soon be heading out on a European tour with Death Cab for Cutie. The indie pop folk instrumentation with a whispy tenor voice and strong clucking percussion is like Death Cab crossed with Kevin Devine on Prozac. What might surprise you is that Nicholson manages not to burst out laughing in this "gravity-defying" video, where he encounters all sorts of flying objects. He does crack a smile a few times though. And so will you at this fun video. "Alpha Street West," is [...]

Ben Gibbard (of Death Cab For Cutie, duh) has a new favorite artist -- Butcher The Bar (Joel Nicholson) that he's been recommending to everyone through his twitter. Good day, everyone, can you people believe it's already October? Sheesh, Halloween is right around the corner, which means free candy, interesting costume choices (who's Quailman this year?), and plenty of horror movies on TV. Oh, October is such a great month. Even as everybody begins to get ready for the impending hibernation, we over here at Cluster 1 are still plugging away at the web to bring you the best videos. You all may be getting ready to bundle up, but chances are your computer (or laptop, or iPad, or tablet, or phone, or whatever) won't be too far [...]
Butcher The Bar: Alpha Street West from morr music on Vimeo . Check out Manchester UK artist Butcher The Bar (aka Joel Nicholson) in his gravity defying video for "Alpha Street West." Off his latest release, For Each A Future Tethered , the video comes just as he's about to go on tour with Death Cab. If you go back a few months, I posted his song Bobby from said record. I was drawn to his earnest writing, intimate vocal styling a la Elliott Smith. Buy his fantastic album, [...]
Flipping a camera around while filming can make for some interesting effects--at least that's what the new video for "Alpha Street West" from Butcher The Bar teaches us. [ download ] [tweetmeme] "Bobby" is a song you escape into as a listener. Like Moses all swaddled up for his first big adventure, it embraces you and gently carries you along its melodic currents. It's the sort of song you suddenly realize you've been listening to for three minutes without really ever having been aware, the soundtrack to a reverie. These are all intended as compliments, of course, a testimony on behalf of Butcher the Bar 's talent for concocting a finely articulated sense [...]

I whip my hair back and forth. Not because I am a teenage girl (although I sometimes act like one) but because there is a party. No, it's not in my pants. This party is in my ears, and soon it will be in yours as well. I am pleased to present to you The Indie Sabbath - more refreshing than an ice-cold soda in the middle of the desert. For me, music is the purest form of communication this world has to offer. I think I should have no other mortal wants, if I could always have plenty of music. [...]

Butcher the Bar, aka Joel Nicholson's sophomore release is filled with jaunty, feel-good tunes. His debut, Sleep at Your Own Speed, was above all very well-received. Critics recalled Sleep at Your Own Speed as an album that dealt with the intricacies of growing up – his first record was recorded in the intimacy of his bedroom. In For Each a Future Tethered, a 60s vibe and eclectic instrumentals scattered throughout the album provides for a textured feel for what is to come. Not only that, but the highly impressionistic songs juxtaposed with powerful imagery makes this release a [...]

Morr Music is one of those intelligent European labels, the kind you wish would invite you over for brunch, rescuing you from the flea-ridden hostel you're in to save money while on a continental junket. Everyone's blond, everyone's good-looking, and… why are half of them on anti-depressants? 'Cause to you the terrace adjoining their loft feels more or less like heaven. For Each a Future Tethered has sounds you imagine would be playing at a perfect volume as you bite into fresh strawberries and cream, perfectly-cooked omelets, and… [...]

So, here's the deal. A few days ago I was informed that my squad will be leaving the relief effort on the 22nd (This upcoming Wednesday). This is good for you because: A) The Indie Sabbath will be back in full force sooner than planned, bringing you that same material that has been described as "Cooler than a polar bear's toe nail" and "So fresh it'll turn your chest into a pair of class cutters." B) [There is no B. Actually there are practically no Bees anymore either . [...]
