We'll celebrate by kicking off some new residencies — and by wishing the Broken West's Ross Flournoy a happy birthday ...] Oliver Future takes another big step in its morphosis by launching a residency at the Echo, and the first night will offer Useless Keys as main support. ... At Spaceland, Castledoor — its debut album "Shouting at Mountains" barely a month old — flexes its pop muscles, with help from the Monolators [Eli [...]

If you like music and you live near LA or Orange County, June is a good month for you. Even if you don't live around here (and I must admit, I am a bit jealous if you don't), then fret not… check out a few bands you may not have heard of before, and see if they're stopping in your area. Want free mp3's of each of these songs? Then join the newsletter , and I'll send you a link. Hooray. Laura Jansen [...]

Butterfly Boucher is back, wings unbound and flying fancy in LA with a new album, Scary Fragile , produced by David Kahne (Paul McCartney, Regina spektor), due out June 2nd, 2009. She'll be playing bunches around LA all month, at Spaceland Monday, June 1st and at Hotel Cafe every Wednesday in June. Butterfly's story is interesting. Musical from a young age, she was raised on the road in the Australian Outback among six other sisters and free-spirited parents. Along the way, she became multi-instrumental. By 16, she was signed to a major, and, after a long [...]
It's been a frustrating few years for Aussie-to-Nashville singer/songwriter Butterfly Boucher , but with some of the usual "major label issues" now out of the way, her long-overdue second album Scary Fragile is now set for a June 2 release. Boucher (pronounced Bow-cher) found some success with the release of her 2003 debut album Flutterby , but her inventive music fell outside of rigid categories, a challenging situation for single minded radio programmers and label marketing execs. Tougher edged and more independent than [...]
We already told you that local singer/Elle Macho bassist Butterfly Boucher is, like, totally Mashable.* That in addition to being totally pumped about the new Ten out of Tenn tour. Now, Perez Hilton h... Continue reading "Butterfly Boucher on Perez Hilton" >

Friday's a little bit tamer than Thursday's schedule - there are eleven showcases to choose from instead of fifteen, but the festival makes up for it with the first of two official after parties at City Hall. Friday's after party is sponsored by Red Bull and features The Dynamites , and I'm pretty sure everyone's going to end up there at the end of the night. But before that, you've got your work cut out for you deciding what to see. The Cannery has a great lineup - including Kindercastle , Cortney [...]

Well I'm back from the lost land of boards preparation & am ready to move on to my 3rd year clinical rotations. During the past month I : 1) Studied my ass off. Learned a lot. Integrated knowledge I'll need to become a competent physician. Excellent. 2) Went 6 days without going outside. Three times. Not good. 3) Went __ days without a shower. Too many times to count. I can't even say how many days for fear [...]

Gonna try a new weekly feature on Wednesdays. In this fast-paced always-trying-to-out-do-the-ne xt-guy music blog world, I think people seem to forget about older music. And by that, I mean just a few years old. This is some of what I was listening to wayback in early 2005 . Citzen Cope ~ Son's Gonna Rise Butterfly Boucher ~ Another White Dash Ani DiFranco ~ Studying Stones Bright Eyes ~ We Are Nowhere And It's Now [...]

So - two weeks from today, Next Big Nashville will be in full swing, and we'll all be recovering from the second night of festivities and the first night of showcases. With over 130 local and regional artists playing the festival, there's a HUGE list of performers to digest - some of which are familiar names around town, some of which I'll admit I've never seen, heard, or maybe even heard of. That means it's about time we start looking at some of this year's performers... and by "looking at" [...]

The Old Man Was My Friend by Molly Lambert So like, Jean Baudrillard died. So he's all "dead" now. Link to his wikipedia entry or something please because I don't feel like explaining all of his obscure theories that I owe whatever the fuck thousand dollars for learning about in the sturdy brick classrooms of New England. The New York Times obit is one of the most brutal I've ever seen, ending on the note "then again, maybe all his work was total [...]

If there's anything I have learned in 23 long years on this planet, it's that any collection of music is designed to give a false impression of oneself. Here's mine. 1. "Be Mine" - David Gray "I like anything that even remotely resembles the second coming of The Police ." 2. "Say It Right" - Nelly Furtado "I'm down with mine peeps. Holla! Did you bring the croutons?" 3. "I Bet It Stung" - Tegan & Sara "I'm [...]

Do you honestly believe they'll change the name of the show to just Anatomy ? For those hiding under a rock, the life of the name on the marquee has died. Clinically speaking, that is, for at least a moment when she wakes up in ghost land between last season's two big ratings deaths: Denny Duquette (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Dylan the bomb-squad leader (Kyle Chandler of Friday Night Lights ,) like some sort of Hot Death Sandwich. And because we've got to work music [...]

Greg Brown ~ read my review of his latest album Butterfly Boucher ~ Another White Dash (easily one of the greatest songs about driving) David Bowie ~ Heroes (easily my favorite Bowie song) Andrew Bird ~ Candy Shop (easily one of Bird’s best early work that sounds nothing like his later work) Black Sheep ~ The Choice Is Yours (easily from The Commercial Music [...]
