Let's waste no time and continue onward. Next up for the midnight-and-onward festivities was Brian Borcherdt at The Garrison. Borcherdt is better known in most circles as the frontman of sound/beat manipulators Holy Fuck , but his work as a singer-songwriter [...]

Samantha Cardow With festivals come hard choices, and for this year's edition of Canadian Musicfest , getting underway with a handful of events tonight and in earnest as of tomorrow, I am choosing to eschew the club-hopping-ness that typically comes with these sorts of fest and largely plant myself in one place for each evening. Hard choice or lazy choice? A little of both. But just because I am staying put doesn't mean that I recommend others do the same. So by way of festival preview, here's a list of stuff that [...]

I'm on Fire (Bruce Springsteen cover) by TheDirty9s I heard this cover live on Friday night when The Dirty 9s played Boyles of Slane and it was immense. The Dirty 9s are close to being the best band in Ireland in my humble opinion! See them on Thursday in The Grand Social . Canadian Music Week's showcase in Toronto will [...]

I've heard from some of our readers that this was one of their favorite albums of 2010, and by listening to it only once, I could figure out why Lost Trails got all the attention it gathered: in short, it's some really good post-rock with some dreamy vocals. This 5-piece from Ireland is has gotten a lot of hype from the likes of The Siren's Sound, but in all honesty, the music was great, the vocals were decent, but putting them together just didn't really do it for me. It had some good stuff, don't get me wrong, [...]

Having formed from the remnants of a number of defunct local bands, Sleep Thieves first caught State's attention supporting Midori Hirano in early 2009, a gig the band had the initiative to set up themselves by reaching out to Hirano's management. It was a move typical of the Dubliners, who have been working their way up through the ranks ever since, promoting their subtle brand of electro through a combination of hard graft and well-earned local knowledge. The 'Thieves have been working so hard, in fact, that when State took the chance to catch [...]

DOWNLOAD: The Butterfly Explosion - "Closer" from Lost Trails DOWNLOAD: The Butterfly Explosion - "Chemistry" from Lost Trails The Butterfly Explosion is a post-rock band out of Dublin, Ireland whose music ranges from shoegazer alt-rock (Ride and My Bloody Valentine are immediate comparisons) to epic post-rock instrumental pieces (here the comparison is to bands like Sigur Ros, Tortise and Explosions in the Sky). Having released two well received EPs over the last few years, The Butterfly Explosion released their first full [...]

This is a band that is up and coming and will be hitting up SXSW shortly. They have some good epic, guitar rock kinds of songs, some instrumentals and some more ballad-y type songs on this record. They remind me a bit of Longwave or a band like that, certainly a good ear for a pop hook and a good ear for matching everything together in a very polished way. Some of the songs on the album work better than others, but I imagine their wall of sound approach would be a good one to check out [...]
