I mentioned in our first installment of Time Travel Tuesday that one of its inspirations was the fact that I had read the novel The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffennegger last December. I just finished reading it again, and I could start yet again from the beginning--it's that good. It has all the elements a great novel should have: characters who turn into people you know and care about, joy, conflict, sorrow, mystery, deep loss, and a love that endures beyond time. Niffennegger deftly describes a devoted couple [...]
The Buzzcocks, "Ever Fallen In Love?" - Normally, whenever I go about putting one of these elaborate Personal Self-Immolation Pageants & Chili Cookoffs together, I take measures to camouflage the catalyst's name, mostly because I feel bad holding people accountable for offenses they committed inadvertantly back before they'd even taken Driver's Ed. Today, however, is not one of those days; Erin Becker's name is, in fact, Erin Becker, and as far as I'm concerned she spent up any sympathy I might have for her public profile back in the eighth grade. So here goes. As I may [...]
Buzzcocks - Everybody's Happy Nowadays For a while, this was my favourite single by my favourite band. Of course, I was a teenager at the time, so "a while" felt like an eternity. So when I look back, Everybody's Happy Nowadays by Buzzcocks looms large in my own particular nostalgia. Buzzcocks (never The Buzzcocks) seemed like the consummate singles band, with every release being seven inches of hormone-fueled perfection. Instant classics, each one wrapped in its own designer jacket , courtesy of cover [...]
Many of the bloggers that TVV provides a link to are part of a great little network that produces Contrast Podcast, a weekly internet-based radio show. The results are always enjoyable, and I'm particularly looking forward to hearing next Tuesday's effort which is on the subject matter of My Favourite 45. I am not (yet) a contributor to Contrast Podcast, but I have given much thought to what I

Ah, the break-up song, the musical accompaniment for punching parking meters and showing up at an ex's workplace to beg for "just one more chance, baby." Or one could go the other route, as I once did, and crawl into a dark, dank broom closet of adolescent rage and nurse a grudge with the aid of generous helpings of Black Flag and Ministry. Magnanimity and equanimity in the face of romantic defeat is hard to come by, and most of us lack the savior faire about such matters that a certain good friend of mine (who [...]
Most of you have heard and cringed at the use of "Everybody's Happy Nowadays" by the Buzzcocks on a recent AARP tv ad. Well the Chicago Tribune talked to former Buzzcocks bassist Steve Garvey about againg and the commercial. Finally an older person that admits it sucks getting old. So Lil' Chris is some kid who was on the show "Rock School". Afterwards he put together a pop punk band and plays out under the name lil' chris or lil' emo chris. Everybody knows that I like what I like, no guilty pleasures here. I still jam to that Rufio album - "perhaps I suppose" and this lil' chris character is trying to bring a similar sound. Regardless he blatantly ripped off the buzzcocks for his second single "gettin enough". And I can't tell if I like it . Here's the video and [...]

I?d love to hear others opine on the subject. Or even share a track or two. Look for Part 2 tomorrow. From The Longest Meow: [MP3] Bobby Bare Jr. ? ?The Heart Bionic? Boggs' Bills Clink... clink... ka-chiiing!! This week, Contrast Podcast is bopping to the beat of cash tills, the sound of shaken piggy banks, and the rustle of banknotes. Yes, the theme this week is, as Abba so eloquently put it, "Money, Money, Money." And since time is indeed money, let's get on with it: you can download this musical cash cow here, or you can improve efficiency, and therefore both your profit margin and return on equity, by subscribing via this RSS feed: http://feeds.feedburner.com/Co ntrastPodcast . And so, let's [...]

Frank Black : What is going on, Peter? We’ve never backed away from anything. We’ve even faced evil incarnate. Peter Watts : Evil incarnate can’t sue. (from Millennium , “Jose Chung’s ‘Doomsday Defense’â€) I was all set with a post celebrating my reasonably successful upgrade to the new beta version of Blogger, when a certain someone lamented that no one was jumping at a recent juicy piece of celebrity gossip. It seems a former 70’s teen heart throb-turned-fading superstar actor was photographed [...]

I've spent the last two days turning my home upside down, rummaging through through my hard drive and searching through the 100's of back up cd's looking for records I was sure that I had! The original idea behind this was to find my copy of 'Spiral Scratch' which has proved to be somewhat elusive. This has really pissed me off seeing as I have already bought 2 copies the first on vinyl back in '77/'78, that I last saw in Italy, and the second was a CD reissue back when I was living in Montpellier. So what [...]

Hello all. The Rock'n'Roll Star has asked me, as a fellow band member, to contribute a summer mix for your listening pleasure. I have to say it is way intimidating to follow the most EXCELLENT mix by Adidas1, but I'll give it a whirl. So The Rock'n'Roll Star is the new music expert. Adidas1 is the Worldbeat and Hip-Hop master. What do I know? Well, give a listen and leave a comment, because I have no idea. I think I like driving guitars and shiny pop, but it's still [...]

I've had a week now of milking Summer Sundae to the max for blogging purposes, and here's one more. BBC 6 Music were the main media partners of the festival, so naturally they broadcasted quite a bit of live music from the festival. So thanks to them, here are a few choice 'live at Summer Sundae' tracks from some of the bands I saw over the weekend. Download: Calexico - El Picador Download: The Proclaimers - I'm on My Way [...]

This weekend I found myself at a hot rod show which evolved that night into a rockabilly concert at a rough & tumble bar, with a pinup girl contest as the finale. It felt like this bizarre glitch in the matrix, whereby I suddenly stumbled back 50 years and was hangin' out with the bad crowd from, like, Rydell High. It was awesomely entertaining - fishnets, pompadours, and pincurls. Oh, and lots of tattoos (guys & gals). To hear a pretty authentic live band crank out songs like "Get Rhythm" (Johnny Cash), "Peggy Sue" (Buddy Holly), and "That's All Right" [...]

I know alot of other sites do semi-regular covers features, and so far I've been resisting the urge. Now, in the steamy home stretch of summer, I fear the tension between me and cover versions is just too great to deny. I can't take all these longing gazes, sleepless nights, and petty arguments springing from nowhere, any longer. While common decency won't let me do this on a regular basis, I need a release. So here, in an abundant, unthinking burst I give you more cover love than you can possibly handle. Hopefully things won't [...]

Dear Friends, the first time I saw Buzzcocks some sixteen years ago it left me a wreck. Far too much vile tequila and rough malt liquor. A sweaty evening spent pogoing and slam dancing a go-go. Walking home in a downpour, cold rain on superheated skin. Upon returning to digs my body more or less shut down and remained in bed for twenty-four hours. Ah, the folly of youth. Fast-forward to this past Sunday night. FiL and 400 other punters waiting to see Buzzcocks play at Vancouver's Red Room. FiL, sober (he's driving, you see) older, [...]
