DR Fuckenstein

DR Fuckenstein Would be a great new name for a up-coming ghetto house project... How do you pick/find songs other than based on hearing them and liking them? What I mean is that sometimes, and not too rarely either, you're directed to songs maybe by their name. I know I am, I find myself putting weird tracks names on the Beatport search field, such as 'Monkeys' or 'Frankenstein'. I prefer track names like that, I'm not too fond of the 'everybody move your body' 'let the bass kick' -type of names. If you got bass in your track and you think [...]

Enter the Magical Mystery Chambers

Enter the Magical Mystery Chambers Tea Sea Records' Tom Caruana brings the motherfuckin' ruckus across the universe with quirky mash-up Enter The Magical Mystery Chambers , a 27-track odyssey where O.D.B. meets "Ob-La-Di." Of course, a project like this will draw many comparisons to Danger Mouse's controversial Grey Album , but other than the fact that both are Beatles/hip-hop mash-ups, the similarities stop there. Carua takes more liberty with his source material, also drawing from Beatles covers by Byron Lee & The Dragonaires, The Harvey Averne Dozen, Phoenix Authority, and others. Whereas Danger Mouse's work was a clear-cut homage [...]

Alton Ellis & Byron Lee say goodbye

RIP Byron Lee

RIP Byron Lee When I was like 12 and first started shopping in the ska/reggae collection of Charlemagne Records on Southside, I remember always being intrigued by Byron Lee records because so many of the covers were just half naked women. 12 year old boys get into that.

Byron Lee 1935 - 2008

Byron Lee 1935 - 2008 It's been a bad year for reggae legends. By my counting, at least three have passed away. Joe Gibbs a few months back, Alton Ellis last month and now Byron Lee . Most famous for his group The Dragonaires , formed in 1950, Lee was a veteran of Jamaican music and one of its more tireless ambassadors. As well as being a ska pioneer, Byron was also a studio owner, producer (producing a lot of The Maytals' music) record distributor and carnival organiser, actively active in his island's music scene right up to his passing away [...]
