For the uninitiated, Nashville's We Own This Town is one of the premier radio shows/blogs for finding new independent music in the Music City and the southeast. They've started putting up local shows at Nashville's Mercy Lounge on Tuesday nights for free (that would be uh, nothing) and this one is sure to be a rip-roarin' rockin' time: Mean Tambourines embodies that 80's synth-dance-indie pop thing really well, but with more polish. Their new EP War drops this July. Joining the mayhem is [...]

Cactus's are a three piece Nashville act who describe themselves as Tropical Punk. I'm not entirely sure what that means, though their Tropical Terror EP has done me well as of late. The EP opens with the screams and murderous guitar of "Where Is My Skeleton," then relaxes on the trauma a bit for "Daddy," displaying stair-stepping guitar lines while forshadowing the remaining work. Throughout, an intense menage of chugging riffs, spastic moods, and enough color to make it worthwhile. audio: Where Is My Skeleton [...]
This is an Interesting Ploy. In exchange for spamming 5 of your friends, the band Cactus's hooks you up with a free download of their new album Tropical Terror. They rock pretty damn hard and are playing SXSW this March. I don't think the next album will be free. So go git it . Mark Hoppus recently addressed rumors of a Blink 182 reunion. Hoppus admitted that he and Tom DeLonge have kissed and made up [...]

Boogaloo Sunset The Hype Machine`s very sharp and comprehensive end of year lists have grabbed some well deserved attention this week. Entitled ` Music Blog Zeitgeist `, you have the best music chosen by the strange breed that are Music Bloggers over the twelve month period that was called 2008. If you need a little help waking up this cold January Monday morning, we recommend checking out the Nashville trio of Cactus's . Playing a self-described style of "tropical thrash rock," we think they've got a pretty fun sound that that echoes hints and tones of the Pixies, Toadies, and Bear vs. Shark. Cactus's - "Where's My Skeleton" Stream some tunes and discover more about the band at their Myspace website . Their Tropical Terror EP was released last week and is out there for you to check [...]
With most bands and publicists in vacation mode last week and since after two holiday mixtapes , our well of indie Christmas carols and Hanukkah hymns was beginning to run dry, we didn't have much to work with for last week's Friday Mixtape. So we decided to scrap it and return with one this week that would be down right bangin'. Suffice to say, I think we accomplished our mission. Below you'll find a mix of this week's best new singles, covers, and remixes along with a multitude of mp3s from some talented up-and-comers. Enjoy! [...]

photo: Sarah Kachevas Wit a name like Cactus's you need a sound that hurts. This Nashville trio are all bout being loud and obnoxious. That's what happens if you live in a town that is famous for over sweet country fare. Their Tropical Terror EP is a demand for attention. They have songs that follow the path that was cut through the musical jungle by Soundgarden, the Pixies and the Stooges. Heady headbanging stuff, that will ruin the lawn when played during a BBQ. [...]
As a three-piece band with a progressive metal drummer, a post punk guitarist, and a thrash rock bassist and with song names as bizarre as Perverted Shark and Where is My Skeleton, Cactus's self proclaimed style of Tropical Punk is actually something fresh and different in rock. With influences ranging from XTC and The Pixies to Converge, Cactus's offer an intense and lyrically smart brand of music that can reach to the musically inclined as well as the musically blind. The three have been [...]
