"Homie" is a bangin tribute to travel and tripping back home by fellow Canadian road warriors Shad, Skratch Bastid, and Cadence Weapon. This song, along with the completed version of the demo release, "Peace", will be part of a Shad + Skratch Bastid collaborative EP entitled The Spring Up to be released online before month's end; a breezy, soulful collection completed shortly after the pair wrapped up work on Shad's upcoming full-length, Flying Colours. In addition to the Cadence Weapon guest spot, the EP will feature a production assist from Bastid's most recent touring partner, DJ Jazzy Jeff.

Two of Canada's finest MCs, Shad and Cadence Weapon , team up for "Homie", the first single off Shad's upcoming EP with producer/DJ Skratch Bastid. They're calling the project The Spring Up and apparently it's due out this month. Damn, way to sneak this one up on us, Shad! I ain't mad, though, especially considering he also has a new full-length, Flying Colours , dropping later this year. You can stream the Biggie-sampling "Homie" below. [ via ]

"In 2012, R&B got a lot darker, more intellectual, and developed a lot of feelings (more than usual, that is). 2012 was when we officially met alternative R&B players like Miguel, Frank Ocean, and The Weeknd - artists' artists who blurred the line between contemporary R&B and neo-soul. Well, 2013, it's time to meet alt-R&B's latest contender, Jarell Perry. Like so many other startup singers, Jarell got his start covering artists like Beyoncé, Coldplay, and Jay-Z on YouTube while in college at UCLA. (We should probably also mention that now Jarell's YouTube has since [...]
All that matters in the hip-hop game is talent, looks and expectations are overrated.

by Tiana Feng Wavelength Day 2 found itself in a busy crowd at The Black Box Theatre below The Great Hall. Visuals were contributed by Live Action Fezz. Kicking things off were THIGHS made up of members of Odonis Odonis , Pants & Tie and Danger Bay. They had their giant amps set up on the ground so the band could mosh with the audience if they wanted. Silly THIGHS, indie kids [...]

The Wavelength Festival and series has always made a point of showcasing the best and most innovative upcoming artists that can be found, and the acts at last night's Festival showcase proved that still holds true. I headed to The Great Hall last night to check out the second night of Wavelength, now in its 13th year. Opening the show were Toronto pre-supergroup Thighs . I know, dear reader &mdash: who are they? — but how could members of Odonis Odonis , Pants & Tie , and Danger Bay [...]
New video for the latest single from Cadence Weapon 's 'acclaimed' and Polaris-nominated , Hope in Dirty City album .

Lately, I'm constantly reminded of albums I overlooked or neglected to pay enough attention to in 2012. Cadence Weapon's Hope In Dirt City falls into the latter category. The third album by the Edmonton rapper (born Rollie Pemberton) is a bit of a mixed bag stylistically – more challenging of a listen, if not a touch incohesive. What remains a constant is Cadence Weapon's awareness of his surroundings and his ability to sharply criticize all manners of culture (he is a former Pitchfork contributor, after all). Hype [...]

Admittedly, I kind of slept on Cadence Weapon's 2012 release, Hope In Dirt City . I dug a few of the singles, but for whatever reason, it slipped by me. Well, it's time we change all that by giving dude his just due. He just dropped the great visuals for his "Hype Man" single, which dives into the rise and eventual downfall of the hip-hop hype man. The video arrives off the announcement that he's been nominated for Rap Artist of the Year by the Indies . You'll understand why he's up for the award once you peep the [...]

With his encyclopedic genre knowledge honed by time as a critic himself, Rollie Pemberton (a.k.a. Cadence Weapon) aims to put Canada on the hip-hop map via Hope in Dirt City , his innovative indie debut. Rollie Pemberton describes himself as a "student of the game" - a well-worn expression, but one that fits the young Canadian better than most. A one-time journalism student, Pemberton supplemented his education by penning rap album reviews for Stylus and Pitchfork, drawing upon his near-encyclopaedic knowledge of the genre while outlining his appreciation and criticisms of some of hip-hop's modern greats. Even in [...]
Rollie Pemberton (aka Cadence Weapon ) has teamed up with George Vale (responsible for videos for the likes of Stars , and Broken Social Scene , amongst others) for the new video to Hype Man taken from last year's Hope In Dirt City , which was shortlisted for the 2012 Polaris Music Prize .
Hype Man. Do the kids even know what a Hype Man is these days? I mean these days it seems like dudes either only perform via a youtube video of their "exclusive freestyle" directed by their friend who is, coincidentally, a hot new filmmaker, or they hit the stage with the 14 dudes they met after they put out that one song that was kind of popular. The notion of having one specific dude tasked with backing up the MC on stage seems almost quaint now, like backup dancers, or actual rapping ability. ANYWAY, enough curmudgeonly whining, this new video [...]

by Tiana Feng Cadence Weapon has a video out for his single "Hype Man" from Hope In Dirty City . Look out for him at the upcoming Wavelength Music Festival.

Believe the hype about Cadence Weapon. Fresh off being nominated for Rap / Hip Hop Artist Of The Year at the Indies Awards in Canada, Cadence Weapon , aka Roland Pemberton , has released a new video for "Hype Man" . Pemberton teamed up with award-winning director George Vale for [...]

Cadence Weapon is back with a new video for his hip hop anthem, "Hype Man," up now on Stereogum, who describe the clip as, "Cadence adapts the personas of both a star rapper and his hapless, nameless hypeman sidekick...illustrating a vast divide in the rap power dynamic." Co-directed by Rollie himself and award-winning director George Vale, the video is a compelling and cinematic look at the seedier, darker side of hip-hop, exploring the plights and demise of a hype man. The 25-year old has also been nominated for Rap / Hip Hop Artist Of The [...]
