Former lead singer of now defunct indie rock band Reiner Maria, Caithlin De Marrais is a Brooklyn based singer songwriter who doesn't always sound like a songwriter, which is a good thing. In her recent album "Red Coats" the best songs blend gentle, never banal ballads with percussive, electric and ambient elements, in ways reminiscent of early Lisa Germano or Suzanne Vega from the 99.9 F period. Enjoy this gem entitled "Belong" (streaming below), check out the video of "Birds" here and go see the lady and her band live at Glasslands on December 2.

Caithlin De Marrais – the Brooklyn-based former frontwoman of the much loved indie rock band Rainer Maria , for whom “ sonic bliss comes naturally ,” as the Boston Globe put it – has just released her sophomore solo album Red Coats on End Up Records . This luminous album is a progression beyond Rainer Maria and her solo debut My Magic City. Analogue fuzz-scapes ease the listener into sharp idiosyncratic drum loops. The softly sung vocals that invite you into the record soon turn into the primal belts for which [...]

Tina Tyrell It's saying something when Annie Clark's looks rank a ways down the list of things she has going for her as St. Vincent . If we're keeping score, then you'd have to put her angelic, crystalline coo of a voice and virtuosic, elliptical guitar skills right at the top (though which of the two should come first is grist for hours of debate). And of course neither would be anything without her songwriting acumen, which nimbly treads the terrain between odd and accessible, between abstract and evocative. But underpinning all of [...]
We just got hit with the first snowfall of the season here in NYC. Even though the weather's starting to chill out, the live shows are keeping up the heat. Check out my preview of the week's shows with some videos of my top picks, including Ween, Battles, and Steve Kimock & Friends. Monday's all [...]

When most of you hear the name Caithlain De Marrais you might draw a blank on where you've heard the name before. Well if I told you that she is the former leading lady of old school post-emo band Rainer Maria, then I'm sure your interest is sparked. The indie veteran is prepping to release her very first solo record entitled Red Coats via End Up Records on November 8th. Here's a taste of what's in store with new song "Belong". Download: Caithlin De Marrais - Belong [MP3]
"Belong" comes to us from Red Coats the striking, unpredictable new indie alt/pop album due November 8 from former Rainer Maria frontwoman Caithlin De Marrais . A combination of tense, shimmering guitar echoes, pulsing bass lines and De Marrais' soft, measured vocals, "Belong", she says, is "an allegorical song that carries a warning. If you love a sailor, you might lose him to the sea. And if you love an artist you might lose him to his art. Loss is a recurring theme in this album, and this song is [...]
Caithlin De Marrais - Birds
Ex-bassist/singer from Rainer Maria Caithlin De Marrais is back with another solo effort with the album Red Coats coming November 8 on End Up Records, and she's leading with the whispery, whimsical and dreamy-for-days single "Birds", for which there's a Super 8 stylized video above, which perfectly encompasses the ideal summer--sailing, family, the beach, celebrations and the endless shimmering sun. But summer's now over, and De Marrais also knows that this is just a natural progression of time and life, leaving the sense in her music of the bittersweet side of Rainer Maria from the past [...]
Close out the summer with some seashore imagery, and a voice you might remember from Rainer Maria . Happy Labor Day; remember it's the last day for whites and seersucker.

We here around THE CULTURE OF ME were once obsessed with all things relating to Sassy and Dirt magazines. And while those titles are long gone, the sentiment of how they covered the culture industries has indeed left its mark...
End Up Records recording artist, Brooklyn resident and former lead singer and bassist for one of our favorite bands ever (rest in peace) Rainer Maria, Caithlin De Marrais, sent us a personal message this afternoon that not only made us...

Well today is a snow day in my part of Colorado, bringing everything outside to a deadened, frozen, thickly-blanketed crawl. It's gorgeous and quiet, and perfect weather for putting the finishing touches on my annual Christmas mix. I do love Christmas music, as you might remember from past years , but I also have a picky palate and am always amazed when I turn on the radio (as I did last night while we played cards) at how many many Christmas songs should have never been made. If I have to hear "Wonderful Christmastime" again, [...]
On the fifth day of Christmas my true love gave to me, five golden rings... and a whole bunch of Christmas MP3's. Are you overwhelmed yet? I sure am. I love love love The Firebird Band's "Gift" and even though it really isn't a Christmas song (i.e. not on a Christmas specific album) I've still included it here. It's my comp3ilation so I can do what I want, including making up words that combine letters and numbers. Bah humbug! MP3: Brand New - O Holy Night [...]

The New Jersey Nets are renting out their players for US$25,000. In a program called 'Your Ticket to a Player', the NBA team are offering a bunch of exclusive tickets to basketball games, plus the chance to have one of their players appear for one hour at any private function of a fan. It is seen as the latest marketing effort by the team, who are trying to survive the sluggish US economy. Unfortunately, the players aren't to keen on the idea, and the day after the program was launched, they formed a protest group called the Basketballers And Lazy [...]

So, here we were, perusing the latest issue of New York , reading their always-excellent "Reasons To Love New York" collection, when we come across the heading "Because Our Pregnant Women Kick Ass" when we catch a glimpse of the now-pregnant Caithlin De Marrais (she's apparently due in January). And it's like, uh, what? That is just crazy. Excellent and we're super excited for her and her soon-to-be heir, yes, but, like, whoa. Cannot believe that the singer/bassist for one of the best Midwest emo threesomes that we've ever had the opportunity to see/hear/experience is knocked up. [...]
