For anyone unfamiliar, V is apparently a magazine about "fashion with a capital F and all the things that go with it." Fancy. While in New York for CMJ, young Miss Caitlin Rose was featured as one of... Continue reading "Caitlin Rose in V Magazine " >
Being that it's the only rock club in Five Points, The 5 Spot is by default the Madison Square Garden of East Nashville. Despite this distinction, the lovable establishment is, shall we say, less th... Continue reading "Lambchop to Play The 5 Spot Saturday?" >

I know I said I'd be posting only one Christmas song this year, but I didn't realize that my favorite new country signer was going to be sending a special Christmas song my way. So here's one more for ya from Caitlin: Caitlin Rose – Pretty Paper ( sendspace ) Just in case you're new to this blog, here's Caitlin's big hit: Caitlin Rose – Dead Flowers ( sendspace ) Buy Caitlin's music [...]

Caitlin Rose , purveyor of her own brand of "cosmic American music" and Bobbie's Dairy Dip ice cream , makes her annual trip from Nashville to NY for a week of shows, most during CMJ. While many New Yorkers stay away from CMJ due to it's "crowds", "hype", and "hipster kids" - Rose is a reason to make it out. Many bands during CMJ can be seen throughout the year in NY venues, but the real treats come in the form of artists like Caitlin who can really only make it to NY but once [...]

Hey everybody, this is the obligatory one-year anniversary post! Yes, my first official post appeared here one year ago today. Kind of hard to believe I 've made it for a full year, since I'm making this up as I go. Anyway, it's been lots of work, lots of fun, and very educational. Thanks to your comments and e-mails I've learned more about music in the last twelve months than ever before. And they say you can't teach an old dog new tricks... While Sunday is the official last night of the festival -closing out with a special Next Big Nashville edition of Nashville Sunday Night at 3rd and Lindsley - Saturday night is the last real night of showcases, and you have nine to choose from before the official after party at City Hall. My pick of the evening is actually that after party - The Features and Jensen Sportag ? Sign me up. But earlier in the night you have lots of great stuff to choose from - particularly the Lake Fever showcase at [...]

Starting off with an old favorite. Okkervil River , who featured on A Free Man's Top 10 last year is back next week with their fifth full length record, "The Stand Ins". I've heard a bit of it and it sounds as good or better than last year's gem "The Stage Names". If you've not heard these Texas troubadours, the time is now. Preorder "The Stand Ins" from Jagjaguwar for an early download and cover art poster. MP3: Okkervil River - "Lost Coastlines" Mash-ups and remixes are [...]
Man, it seems like only yesterday that I was jamming to that Movies With Heroes / In Clover split EP. But alas, it wasn't. It's been a few years since Theory 8 put out that CD and just about eight years since those fine folks in Nashville have been in business. Yes, eight years for Theory 8. And the label/management company likes the sound of that so much that it's adding another eight into the mix by hosting a birthday bash with eight bands on the bill at Nashville's Mercury Lounge. It's all going [...]
One of my favorite new country artists, Ms. Caitlin Rose, has a brand new limited-edition EP in the stores called Gorilla Man . The new release is a cleverly-packaged 7" vinyl EP featuring four songs, three of which appeared in different form on her debut EP called Dead Flowers . Here, on Gorilla Man , Ms. Rose is backed by a full country band. This instrumentation particularly suits the first track on side B, Answer In One Of These Bottles , which is a nice honky-tonk-style drinking song. [...]

This is my final Lebowskifest post for '08. The Rolling Stones released " Dead Flowers " in 1971, though they'd started recording it back in 1969. It's a song that's been covered a LOT -- the perfect country song for a rock band, and the perfect rock song for a country band. I've gone overboard for this edition of Multiple Mondays, with eleven versions (though I still can't claim it's even near complete) so you get to hear all-rock and all-folk versions, in addition to the various mixtures of rock and country. (I also had all-country and all-pop versions, but [...]

Ever since the economic stimulus package was announced this spring, companies have been offering all kinds of promotions to get their greedy hands on your money entice you to help consumer spending by purchasing their products. Of course the catch is that to qualify for most of these offers, you have to spend your entire check in one place. I don't know about you, but in this failing economy, there really isn't anything I'm dying to spend six hundred bucks on. However, I'd gladly spend fifteen bucks to get five great rock albums. For a limited [...]

Anastasia Cazabon - Tree (from Stories ) Holding hands with Anastasia Cazabon (whose photographs I've been featuring this week), Nashville's Caitlin Rose tells stories of an evolving country. She speaks in a new generation of American twang and "Im-a-gonnas" about another generation of young American alcoholics falling in love at backyard weddings. The stories are old themes voiced with a new ease and energetic pace . They're deliberately grainy in the same way that the black and white photographs [...]
So to commemorate Vince's relocation to Nashville, I decided to post (again) on Stark favorite and Nashville local Catlin Rose . I am straight stealing this post from the Nashville Cream , which is the blog of local publication and employer of Vince - The Nashville Scene . (Also take note of their post on our gracious bocce host Janet Timmons , who runs the blog Out the Other .) I had a chance to hang with Caitlin Rose a few weeks back and this short video does a [...]
I have been charged with dereliction of duties with regard to my blogging, and my penance is your reward, or punishment depending on whether you no likee. Prevailing wisdom would seem to suggest that getting shit-canned would free up time for my little hobby, and indeed it has. I have just been too damn lazy. I will try to do better. There are a few records on the horizon that I am mildly excited to tepid about including a Ministry covers record (see track below), a new Breeders record, the new NIN Ghosts I-II-III-IV, a new Isobel [...]

Caitlin Rose has a lot going for her. She's only 20 years old with a killer country voice. As if by instinct, she puts just the right amount of twang in just the right places. Add to that an engaging attitude and a familiar way with words and she's really onto something. While her new EP, Dead Flowers, is an ejoyable listen in its own right, its real charm lies in the promise that it holds for the future. In seven diverse songs—five original compositions and two covers—Caitlin Rose displays all the necessary elements of a country artist [...]

Hello loyal readers, last week's spree of posts has left me buried under a stack of work, so I need to catch up on my "real" job for the next few days. But don't fret, I've got a lot of interesting posts "in the pipeline." See the list at the bottom of the sidebar for a preview of coming attractions. Until then, enjoy this cheerful little pop ditty: Harry Nilsson - Good Old Desk (mp3) ( buy album ). [Thank you for subscribing! Please be sure to check [...]
