Years before Getz/Gilberto , Tjader and Getz helped take Latin jazz to the masses with this nifty one-off. Cal Tjader's name may not be one of the first that comes up in discussions of the "jazz greats". His influence, however, was huge. Critic Ron Wynn has referred to Tjader as no less than "The greatest non-Latin bandleader in Latin jazz history". Tjader got his start as drummer with the Dave Brubek Trio before taking up the vibes and joining George Shearing's band, where he played with Latin percussion legends Mongo Santamaria and Willie...

Two giants of jazz meet for a 1958 West Coast date This is a sweet 1958 West Coast jazz session that brought together vibraphonist Cal Tjader and tenor saxophonist Stan Getz. Also playing on the session is noted San Francisco pianist Vince Guaraldi, guitarist Eddie Duran, bassist Scott LaFaro and drummer Billy Higgins. Each of the side men were starting to stir up some notice, though they were each a few years away from their breakthroughs. Getz stands at the session's center, but leaves room for the others to solo; Guaraldi and Duran offer [...]

Well, it's September and summer is about to end. Personally, I think it used to take twice as more to end yet every year it seems to speed up more and more. Anyways at least it's still sunny for the time being. Here's a 4 song selection suitable for sunny summer/early autumn days. Starts off with one of the alltime best soul pieces; Gil Scott-Heron 's timeless Lady Day & John Coltrane from his 1971 Pieces of a Man album. The second piece is a latin piano piece by Cal Tjader [...]

Here's some mokin' hot latin jazz from a virtuoso of the vibes, Cal Tjader . I wasn't familiar with Tjader until I heard his live Cuban Fantasy album sometime last year, but the man was a vital component of the Bay Area jazz scene in the 50's and 60's, starting out in the Dave Brubeck Octet. Hooking up with George Shearing's popular quintet in the early 50's, coupled with the mambo craze of that time, turned Tjader on to the Latin jazz sound, which he would perform straight through to his [...]

Due to life and work getting in the way, it's taken me over a week to finally type up some thoughts about about the record club we held last week . However, it's also given me time to digest a lot of the feedback we got. First off, jds and I want to thank everyone who came to The Black Door to share some music. The turnout (about 25-30 people) was better than expected and everyone seemed to enjoy the night; myself particularly. It's always fun to share music with others and be turned [...]

LM : The breakdown of distinctions- between pop culture and "serious" culture, different genres, different art forms- seems to have had a liberating effect on writers of your generation. WG : The idea that all this stuff is potentially grist for your mill has been very liberating. This process of cultural mongrelization seems to be what postmodernism is all about. The result is a generation of people (some of whom are artists) whose tastes are wildly eclectic- people who are hip to punk music and Mozart, who rent these terrible horror and SF videos from the [...]

MONDAY.-The new creature says its name is Eve. That is all right, I have no objections. Says it is to call it by, when I want it to come. I said it was superfluous, then. The word evidently raised me in its respect; and indeed it is a large, good word and will bear repetition. It says it is not an It, it is a She. This is probably doubtful; yet it is all one to me; what she is were nothing to me if she would but go by herself and not talk. TUESDAY.-She has [...]

I loaned my vinyl copy of Cal Tjader's album Soul Sauce to a friend a few weeks ago and since then I have seen/heard it seemingly everywhere (including one of my SIRIUS shows). Must be the Tjader collective consciousness at work. You know how he do. The vinyl copy I own was originally my fathers [...]
