Children: they really do f**k you about don't they? In a week when our eldest sprat managed to eclipse his younger sister's great show of academic prowess by making us all as miserable as sin, I think I should resign defeated. I blame the parents; he seems to. Liar, liar, pants on fire. Most things in life that are worth something demand some sort of effort – sadly my darling son, that sort of self motivation is something that you have to find inside yourself. Swimming against the tide this Friday. Mrs Mackerel x [...]

The Clash's "Guns of Brixton" is probably one of the greatest rock songs ever written. Anyways, it is certainly one of the best rock tracks ever fused with another genre (considering it is maybe more reggae that rock). I love the way it just oozes defiance, rebellion and urban menace. The three covers I collected here are all pretty unique and really shine a light on different aspects of the source material. It's also just really interesting to see what the covering bands took from the original and what they discarded. Arcade Fire's live version pretty much strips the reggae [...]
As the Crow Flies , an EP with six unreleased tracks Amos Lee recorded with acclaimed Americana band Calexico during sessions for his excellent 2010 album Mission Bell , is now on the docket for a February 14 release. We think the best of the lot is "Mama Sail To Me", a beautiful tailored track filled with graceful melodic lines and perfectly nuanced production and instrumental backing from Calexico founders Joey Burns and John Cavatino -- and, of course, Lee's distinctive, sweet and soulful vocals. [...]

"Like the fat man said, if you have to be careful not to drink too much, it's because you're not to be trusted when you do." Calexico - Beautiful Fucking Day Calexico - Firestorm of Impossible Odds

It finally happened. Winter arrived. Snow fell and we woke up this past Sunday with about three inches of the stuff. I'm glad it didn't arrive earlier, as Friday saw me at KSVR for a four hour stint of music. The first two hours flirted with folk music and the latter half was full-on garage rock, garage pop and psychedelic pop. Much of the 10 to midnight show came courtesy Finest Kiss , who posted some great 2011 lists. Taking [...]

The trouble with acoustic covers of popular songs is that some earnest singer armed with a guitar will slow down Jingle Bells and whisper the lyrics as if they have a deep meaning. I have no principles that compel me to disallow the notion of whispering songstresses, but on this Christmas mix I've tried to keep them to a respectful minimum. Still, we have the doses of yuletide angst which the acoustic genre prescribes to go with the upbeat welcome of the merry season. Don't be alarmed by the inclusion of three tracks called Christmas Song: they are [...]
It's taken a few days, but I've compiled a marathon playlist that is 4.6 hours in length (just in case I fuck up miserably and need to listen to something in the "whoops! wagon" during the assisted ride to the finish line). I used songs from my own 18-week training program that seemed to have [...]

Calexico - 'Selections From Road Atlas 1998-2011' (UK Release: 21 Nov '11) // Words: Simon Opie Calexico have been playing since the mid-nineties and their two founding members Joey Burns and John Convertino – both multi-instrumentalists - have pursued a distinctive and singular musical vision from the beginning. Over the year, they have produced a series of tour-only CDs displaying their lighter side and these eight CDs have now been released as a limited edition vinyl only [...]

Calexico have released Selections from Road Atlas 1998-2011 , a collection of songs they had only released at live concerts in the past. This might be, in my opinion, one of the best things Calexico has ever put out. Personally I have always been a bit bored by their albums but this might make cause for revisiting their catalog. I especially like their long instrumental "Waitamo".
Not surprisingly, it is a thin week for new releases. Many record companies hold off on releasing albums during the week of Thanksgiving because it's so much more difficult to get the attention of media and music consumers due to the holidays. That said, there are a few albums out this week that we highly [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

Merge If you thought that it had been a while since we heard from Nashville's Lambchop , well you were right. It had. After finishing up with 20082s OH (ohio) , bandleader Kurt Wagner was content to put the orchestral country-soul outfit in mothballs for an undetermined spell while he worked on KORT , a collaborative project with singer-songwriter Courtney Tidwell . But with the passing of friend and collaborator Vic Chesnutt in 2009 and at the urging of guitarist Mark Nevers, Wagner got [...]

Traditional chamber-folk sound with a modern twist.

Summers are hell, the nut jobs are many, but I love my home state of Arizona. And in the almost 19 years I've called it home, nothing that has happened here was more shocking, sad and incomprehensible than the tragedy in Tucson on January 8th, 2011. The shooting outside a Safeway store took the lives of six, and injured 13 more, including Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. Tucson-Based music writer Eric Swedlund, who has been an online pal of mine for years (via his music blog, Catfish Vegas ), was communications director for Gabby Giffords' campaign back in 2008, [...]

The dusty desert highway of Tuscon-native band Calexico's 15-year career is dotted with a notable collection of passionate Latin infused Americana (for lack of another general category to place them). While the band may not be familiar to most, their music shows up in many places- from interstitial music in NPR to movie soundtracks and in their many collaborations (including one fantastic album with The Iron and Wine ). If only for these works, Calexico will stand as one of the important and influential American bands. Along this [...]
