For the past two weekends the Crescent City has played host to the annual New Orlean's Jazz & Heritage Festival . During their first-weekend set, Calexico paid tribute to one of New Orleans' native sons - the severely under-appreciated Bobby Charles. The late singer-songwriter, who likely best known to HT readers for his appearance on The Last Waltz soundtrack, began writing and recording songs at the age of 17. While he never quite achieved success as a solo artist, Charles' songs have been recorded by an impressive list of musicians including Ray Charles, [...]

The Internet's constant rush of new music is great. But time and time again, audiences come back to the old stuff. As of last year, catalog sales outpace new music sales . People who lived in the era of whatever that "old stuff" is seek it out for nostalgia and young people who never lived in that music's era long for a time in music history they never lived in. But how does the constant rush of quality new music get winnowed down and become “old stuff” or canon? Converting the varied ages at New Orleans Jazz & [...]
I picked up so much vinyl this year...I'm not even sure how I'm going to pay rent. And isn't that what good music is about? Living in a van...down by the river. There wasn't a release this year that I went in excited about...but I came out loving almost everything I purchased. I've had the chance to listen to most of my purchases and have heard a lot of other stuff. And the Calexico album

What do you do if you admire a musician's skill and craft, yet can't quite get behind the results of that craft? Thus is the problem with Iron & Wine , the brainchild of Sam Beam, now on its fifth full-length record and featuring an ever-expanding sound that seems to go deeper into the past. Ghost on Ghost finds Iron & Wine turning into something of a modern Van Morrison , complete with smooth horns, jaunty folk tunes, and a flair for [...]

Olivia Malone Some weeks, the inbox is a veritable cornucopia of interesting concert announcements for acts big and small. Compiling the blog posts that collect those up is a genuine delight. And easy. Generally so easy. This was not one of those weeks. Indeed, most of the news was of the "support announced" variety, which isn't necessarily uninteresting - sometimes it's more interesting than the headliner - but it is less easy. Anyways, we'll kick off with New York's

Shawn Brackbill You have to wonder in Kurt Vile ever regrets leaving The War On Drugs after touring their 2008 debut Wagonwheel Blues , considering the level of success the Philadelphia outfit would achieve with their second album, Slave Ambient . Or maybe not. Given that Vile's laid back, groovingly psychedelic guitar-rock travels a fairly parallel path to what Adam Granduciel is doing with The War On Drugs, their fanbases probably overlap pretty significantly and Vile's own 2011 effort, Smoke Ring [...]
The legacy of D. Boon's remarkable musical shorthand still matters today, as these covers - some his, some of his songs - will attest.
Five artists came dancing across the water to take on Neil Young's classic - and you can say "What a killer" about each and every version.

In the list for the Record Store Day 2013 (April 20, 2013) releases I noticed under LP's that there will be a LP + CD release of Spiritoso by Calexico . The notes say that this was originally available only as a vinyl release on tour. While I'm not sure about that, it was part of the special box set release of Algiers - Calexico's most recent album release. Here is what City Slang (Calexico's European label who put out the box set) said about it: Spiritoso [...]

Kelly for the eighth annual Pitchfork Music Festival , which will return once again to Chicago's Union Park from July 19 - 21.The Glasgow-based band , whose 1998 album If You're Feeling Sinister is the subject of a fantastic new P4K documentary, which you can watch below, have now announced a short North American tour leading up to their headlining appearance.
