Keith Klenowski While 2010 was unquestionably the year of The National with the release of their breakout record High Violet , the band haven't been entirely quiet this year, continuing to tour and also releasing a couple of new tracks for soundtracks to various things. One of them was for Portal 2 , which I'm led to understand is a video game; I'm still working on finishing Super Mario Bros so I'll have to take your word for it. But rather [...]

[Calexico - "Frontera/Trigger" live MP3] Joey Burns of Calexico is out on tour in Europe when I arrive in Tucson. He knows a thing or two about road weariness, too. When I first saw Calexico in October of 2003 he launched in a tirade (although with his quiet demeanor I'm not sure that's the correct [...]

You may not be familiar with the name Tom Russell , but you damn well outta be. A published author and respected artist, music is Russell's day job, and the years have seen his songs covered by luminaries with names like Johnny Cash, Dave Van Ronk, Jerry Jeff Walker, Doug Sahm and Ramblin' Jack Elliott. Part troubadour, part Beatnik poet, his talent is such that Lawrence Ferlinghetti (he of Go fame) asserts that Russell's characters capture, "the wounded heart of America." Not at all insignificant praise. [...]
It seems like Tom Russell has been around forever, usually rocking his country-folk approach, with hints of Americana fueled by Mexicana. He's got a new record coming out on Shout Factory in September titled Mesabi , and I've really been channeling the music of my father today, so this track definitely hits home. But, for those of you unfamiliar with the veteran, you'll find vocal reminiscent of Roky E , which is no surprise since both men have been rocking the Texas [...]

Leave it to the Calexico gang to provide the perfect soundtrack to all your imaginary westerns. Calexico - Minas De Cobre (For Better Metal) MP3
Today's installment covers 45 songs - including what Dylan has claimed is his favorite cover ever!
The second in a five-part series that features covers of every single Bob Dylan song, in alphabetical order. Today's installment goes from F through J, for a total of over 50 more covers.

An unusual double feature today, combining our two most popular focusing strategies: covers of, and covers by, a folkworld artist with whom the average folkfan is only partially or anecdotally familiar. As with all those who we tout, our feature subject deserves to rise above the constant chatter, to be celebrated for his songwriting and performance. But in this case, the man is so prolific, it seemed appropriate to go for the omnibus approach. To be fair, though I had long planned to take on the collected coverage of Bonnie [...]

Last week I posted my interview with Tony Tost about his book on Johnny Cash's American Recordings album. One of the things I like about the book is that it shares my view that some of the covers JC tackled on his later albums with Rick Rubin , quite frankly, sucked. With this in mind I asked Tony to come up with a list for Carnival Saloon of the Worst of American Recordings. Being a creative chap Tony suggested something much better. What songs should Johnny Cash have covered in [...]
It's been almost 8 years since the first time I saw Calexico. During their tour for Feast Of Wire I caught them at a small restaurant/club called NXNW in the suburbs of Philadelphia. The band put on a truly wonderful show. After that album the band released a decent collaborative EP with Iron & Wine, [...]

[It's not only Cinco de Mayo, but it's Adele's birthday. Best wishes, and here's what's up tonight ...] Great night ahead: ► It's that time of the month: The Rumble hits the Echo tonight, topped by two SoCal bands who released fine debut albums already this year. Apex Manor's pop-rock gem "The Year of Magical Drinking" came out in January on Merge; the Fling's harmony-laden "Then the Madhouses Appear" is just out [...]

Blue Note recording artist Amos Lee has scored his first-ever No. 1 single at AAA radio with "Windows Are Rolled Down." It's yet another career high for the Philadelphia-born singer-songwriter whose current album, Mission Bell , debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard album chart in February and earned Lee his best sales week yet. This podcast is, as you will already know, very, very late. Personally I blame a combination of the RNLI, gin, and the fact that Mrs. Toad is away all week, which meant that yesterday wasn't really available for blog things. It's also not very new music-orientated either, so hopefully those of you who come here pretty much just for that won't be too disappointed. I think what happened was that I got so into a handful of new releases recently that I neglected all the others, so when I came to sit down and write about [...]

"We take our own chances and pay our own dues, the silver tongued devil and I..." Or: one more shiny shiny hand picked six pack for you to explore. This time around, Kris Kristofferson confronts his devils, krautrockers La Düsseldorf float over their fair city, while Lee Clayton simply saddles up and rides. Reggae crooner Ken Boothe talks sweet (and it's not what he´s smoking), the Calexico boys spy decay of blossoms and roots well hacked, while Gene Clark takes a whiff on me. Spot a cool tune? Go ahead and buy the album. [...]
