Iron & Wine doesn't get much respect from me; they're generally sweet but contourless to my ear--it's beard music like Kings of Convenience, without the beauty. But their collaboration with Calexico is worthy of apotheosis, no doubts. The sparkle and twang that Calexico brings to the deal obscures Iron & Wine's vocal anemia and showcases their lovely harmony. For the dreamy songs they are, they're unusually sticky, and Dead Man's Will is the one that stuck today; but each track is as luminous as the next. [...]

Welcome to another podcast. As usual, the songs were put together by the fine folks at Aperture Music , who have just finished up their work on " Jackass: Number 2 ," which we are totally looking forward to seeing (and we're not just saying that). The theme for this edition is artists that are named after citites. There are a zillion choices for sure, so this is by no means a complete list. We could likely put together a dozen podcasts on this theme alone, but in hopes of not blowing up your iPods, [...]

English : Months ago I commented about this band which mixes the traditional Mexican music, mariachi, country, and the guitar sounds of California frontier.... the style of this band once was called as "Cactus Rock". For those who haven't had the chance to listen Calexico ( Cal ifornia + M exico ... duh!!!), its sound is more like an Ennio Morricone soundtrack without cowboys but with Kill Bill (Vol. 2).... with a little bit of Grim Fandango (for those of you who are abandonware lovers). I started to listen [...]

Flatline is a term I have become quite attached too these last days. I began to use this word for a specific playlist I created in my ipod, in this playlist one can find mellow music that borders on mellancollic but dosen't quite get there. I guess you have to listen to the songs to truly understand what I'm trying to explain here. But anyway, I've found myself listening incessantly to Calexico and Iron & Wine lately, I believe they're perfect 'flatline' material. The notes, rythms and textures of these two bands blend perfectly with a with a [...]
It’s been a while since the last Disco Pogo post, so here’s volume 9. Another cracker. There’s not a duff track on the CD, but I’ve managed to select six for your listening pleasure. We have James Yorkston providing guest vocals to thy Psychonauts’ nice slice of electro-folk and Calexico getting their Woven Birds given a suitably downbeat rub-down by Stratus. Elsewhere on remix action we have

Note: One of the better acoustic wednesday list, almost coherent and dictating mood. It's early chilly late summer list, imagining fall. "Acoustic Wednesday No. 30. A Piece of Bitter Chocolate" The Transmissionary Six : Black Tin Rocket , Get Down (Film Guerrero, 2004) Jolie Holland : Old Fashioned Morphine , Escondida (Anti, 2004) Michael Leviton : Summer's The Worst , My Favorite Place to Drown (Ace Fu Records, 2006) [...]
Two weeks ago I dedicated an entire radio show to Merge Records . This week (August 29, 2006) I dedicated the show to Touch and Go who are celebrating their 25th anniversary with a three day festival starting Friday September 8th in Chicago. All twenty-nine songs I played are right here as MP3s... PLAYING FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 8TH 1) !!! (Chk Chk Chk) - Hello? Is This Thing On? 2) Ted Leo & The Pharmacists - Where Have All The Rude Boys Gone? some great explosion, a metamorphosed tug clawing the imagined fall: to be dead at the dead wind’s hand, and indistinguishable as indistinguishable trees against the passive ever changing labor of thought. - J. Schneider , The Gesture of Seasons. Fall comes early. This small causes it. Originally a random filler list (between " five easy list for lovers " and " fall best of album " ), it starts to [...]
Crystal Frontier/Band Intros/Guns of Brixton (Clash Cover)-Calexico. THE LAST WORD: "No one [in my Adminstration] ever said Iraq had something to do with 9-11." -George W. Bush, August 2006

Over the summer I was anti-social and watched lots of movies. I denied this endlessly, but basically, that's the gist of it. I love Netflix like a fat kid loves cliches. Here are 3, all of which you have probably heard of, that really made an impact on me this summer. And of course, some songs that compliment them. hopefully. Mean Streets This movie fascinated me for several reasons. Most obviously, it's amazing to be [...]

I've had a week now of milking Summer Sundae to the max for blogging purposes, and here's one more. BBC 6 Music were the main media partners of the festival, so naturally they broadcasted quite a bit of live music from the festival. So thanks to them, here are a few choice 'live at Summer Sundae' tracks from some of the bands I saw over the weekend. Download: Calexico - El Picador Download: The Proclaimers - I'm on My Way [...]
As usual I'm always a little late to listen to a lot of great stuff. Luckily though, I didn't miss the latest Calexico record Garden Ruin . Hailing from Tuscon, AZ, the band manages to capture the "high lonesome sound" of their home state. Sometimes a whisper and sometimes a roar; the music is mezmerizing and darkly melodic. It is out now on Quarterstick Records . Put succinctly, 'Garden Ruin' is where Calexico fill those dusty, empty landscapes they documented with a big, big [...]
Saturday’s musical adventures started at the early hour of 2pm with Howling Bells in De Montford Hall. My prior knowledge of HB has been through some tracks off various blogs. I quite enjoyed their dark brooding rock which had a certain swagger and was perfect for the darker-than-usual interior of the Hall. The highlights came at the beginning of the set with a song that sounded like a sexier
In the second of a three-part series covering Lollapalooza 2006, we check out Wolfmother, Calexico, Sonic Youth, Blackalicious, Dresden Dolls, and the Flaming Lips. And we've got photos of New Pornographers and Kanye West, too.

I've been bit slow with these but better late than never. A couple of RIPs. Firstly and most famously, Arthur Lee of Love . Laterally, since his release from prison in 2001, the rejuvenated Arthur was Love. I'm kinda wishing now I'd got to see him, as Forever Changes is a particular favourite of mine. Give me that any day over yer Sergeant Peppers and the likes. Classic stuff. There's really no need for me to say much more, as plenty has been said already (for one, read this obituary [...]

We're at the last month of the summer here folks, as August is right around the bend. There's a bunch of really top notch concerts coming up in August so here's what I'm planning on seeing. As always feel free to send me free tickets, especially to the sold out shows. I'm going to list them a little bit differently this month, instead of chronologically I'm sorting it by price so you can plan according to your budget like I am. Hope to see you guys at some of these shows. Free Shows: August 2nd - Jens [...]
Things have obviously been too cheerful around here lately - no American music Club for months and months, so in the spirit of temperance (and dullmen.com) here are Calexico covering American Music... [[ This is a content summary only. Visit MyWebsite.com for full links, other content, and more! ]]
Calexico will be playing at Mississippi Nights on Saturday, September 23. Unfortunately, I won't be able to make it, as I will be in Las Vegas for a bachelor party, but you should definitely try to check it out. Calexico - All Systems Red Calexico - Across The Wire (acoustic) Calexico - Cacabel (live)
