It's hard for me to believe that Califone are on their ninth album. They've been releasing material for just over 10 years now, yet it's been 3 years since their last album "Roots & Crowns". To clarify how they can do 9 albums in 11 years with what was just a 3 year gap, well, they released 2 albums apiece in 2002 and 2003. And assuming you've not been following the great Chicago band for these past 11 years (few people have), you should know - every Califone album is excellent (save for maaaybe one...I'm looking at you, "Sometimes Good [...]

It was such a big day for album releases , I couldn't cram everything into one post (though I see some blogs handled it just fine). As one of my blogger brothers said, there are probably a number of new albums out today that will end up on year-end, best-of lists. Way too much to absorb in one week. Besides the bands I mentioned in my last post , there are interesting offerings out from Kurt Vile , Califone , Daniel Johnston and whole bunch of other folks. [...]

Wow there is a lot of great music being released this week. The early highlight for me is the new Built to Spill album but I also feel confident recommending the new Air, XX, and Mountain Goats albums. This has been a tremendous year for music and it doesn't look like it's going to slow down anytime soon. What yet to come 2009 releases are you looking forward to? Check out the new releases, album art, streams and mp3's after the jump... [...]

New Wax Chicago's Califone, now signed to Dead Oceans, which is home to the likes of Bowerbirds, Akron/Family, Phosphorescent, and John Vanderslice among others, follows up their wonderful 2006 album Roots & Crowns with a new album entitled All My Friends Are Funeral Singers . While the album stand's on its own musically, it is also a companion piece to Califone lead singer Tim Rutili's first feature film, which shares the same title and is about a psychic woman who lives in the woods alone. [...]

Califone All My Friends Are Funeral Singers (2009, Dead Oceans) RIYL = Phosphorescent, Castanets, Gowns Two short, innocuous somethings written under the influence of All My Friends Are Funeral Singers : (1) Truncated elefant walks into forest – mechanized chaos patter (murmur murmur) – yells: "You anti-irridentites!" and the birds flush from the trees. She eyelashes them(!), her ear feathers bristling and shuttering at the thought of being birdly. He is the first in that history to climb down from the tree -(monkey)- walk to the corner of the forest, buy [...]

Califone - "Alice Marble Grey" This is delicious soup. It's tomato with a bit of chive and it's warm because I left it in the sun an hour. To go with this I have a pair of salt crackers in a plastic wrap. I lick the wrap clean and lick the bowl clean and spit wash it. Tomorrow I'll use the cucumbers as they'll go before anything else, so I'd better eat them first even though I don't like cucumbers much, especially so many all at once. Then the brocolli will be the following week, water should [...]

Hi! Did you have a good weekend? We sure did! Chicago, though not very fruitful for the Tsuru Nation Domination (not the biggest sales and the photoshoot ended up being a no go), but it was certainly a success as far as Baby & Me time goes! Had a blast hanging out in Chicago -- though lard knows the parking & traffic situation there leaves MUCH to be desired. Oh well, big city life I s'pose. While there, two things happened that I'd like to share with [...]

Califone - Funeral Singers Mycket bra akustisk rock med en gnutta folk över sig. Låten är från bandets nya album All My Friends Are Funeral Singers . Det kommer även en film med samma namn som kommer att visas på festivaler nästa år.

Oooh, just in time for Autumn, new music from Califone! I am usually not a big fan of experimental stuff, my stupid pop sensibilities are always getting in the way, but something about the haunting, somewhat muted tones of this Chicago band have always gotten through to me. And this new record, slated for an October 6th release, has what will definitely be one of my favorite album titles of 2009 - 'All Of My Friends Are Funeral Singers.' Enjoy the killer title track... * 'Funeral Singers' - MP3

i should probably visit either a. stereogum b. brooklyn vegan c. pitchfork or d. dead oceans more often cause they all info on the upcoming califone record that i had no idea was coming out. i am very psyched to say the least. its called all my friends are funeral singers and its due out on 10.6 on dead oceans. if you pre-order it via dead oceans you get a bunch of goodies including an advance download of the record. check their site for their upcoming tour dates. sadly, no nola show announced as [...]

Put down the potato salad and deviled eggs for just a few minutes and click on THIS LINK to read my esteemed colleague Brian's post about the five-album stretch R.E.M. dished out from 1988-1998 for a few minutes. Brian came out swinging yesterday in his Lazy Saturday post, and a good portion of today will be spent arguing or, possibly, cementing his bold statement that no other band recorded five records of material as noteworthy as Michael Stipe and crew during this time period. Likewise, as the concept of the album fades away in [...]
![[mp3] Califone - "Funeral Singers"](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/1962925_lg.jpg)
As I mentioned a few weeks back, Califone has a new album coming out October 6. All My Friends Are Funeral Singers is the first new material from the Chicago art-folk contingent since 2006's splendid Roots & Crowns, and the 14-song set doubles as a sort-of film soundtrack to band leader Tim Rutili's directorial debut of the same name. Stereogum premiered the abbreviated title track, "Funeral Singers", yesterday morning. It features a familiar bed of rickety, fret-buzzing acoustic guitars and Rutili's creaky [...]
