I've been digging through my old records lately and I can't believe just how awesome music was between 2003 and 2007. This awesomeness has inspired a new series, The Throwback Mix Series , which will be a six or seven installment set of mixes each containing 20 songs that I loved during that time span - and each mix will be completely rad. Spread the word and be sure to support the artists you enjoy. Neutral Milk Hotel - "Holland, 1945" [...]
At least one man - maybe scores of men - once said that music is not your friend in the immediate aftermath of a negative life-changing event. I don't know who said that (Thomas Hobbes? Kierkegaard? Sirhan Sirhan?) but he made a good point. Pretty much every song ever penned was done so to remind [...]
Caitlin Rose Own Side Now Released August 9, 2010 (Names Record, Import only in the US) Short Notes: A lovely, soft (but not especially delicate) piece of contemporary Americana. Brandon: A- First off, I’d like to apologize for the grade inflation I’ve been dealing in these last few weeks. Looking back, comparing my ratings with Lin’s, it’s easy to see I’ve been giving out consistently higher grades, especially to records that, in all honesty, I can’t imagine [...]
So, normally I don't look at other lists of people's favorite records because I don't want to be influenced, but inevitably I glance at some afterward and notice that I left shit off my list. Oh well. Ian told me about that Agalloch album, Marrow Of The Spirit and I thought it was good. The great, high-energy Milwaukee band Call Me Lightning put out a really good album this year too, When I Am Gone My Blood Will Be Free . Red Sparowes' The Fear Is Excruciating, But Therein Lies The Answer , Neil Young's [...]
Olá. From now on I'll be here too. Rodrigo, from Insomnia Radio: Portugal. For my first appearance here, I bring you a Chicago based band, who's name was inspired in a song from The Who. Call Me Lightning has long been one of Milwaukee’s most popular indie-rock bands, packing clubs with its roaring mix of arena-rock stomp and punk-rock energy. The band’s new album, When I Am Gone My Blood Will Be Free, is a typically hard-charging yet tuneful collection of songs—imagine if Tommy-era Who cut its teeth in the Riverwest basement scene—and is a contender [...]

by Chase Macabre (STL)Seeing Cleveland's mighty Keelhaul in concert is an interesting visual experience. The four bandmates look more like grizzled roadies than they do rock stars. If any of the dudes were your uncle, you'd probably refer to them as your "Dad's brother," in order to keep some emotional distance. You might consider skipping the show, but you'd be in error, because Keelhaul
by Chase Macabre (STL)This past Saturday evening, after playing a gig at the St. Louis venue Off Broadway, Crustcake had the opportunity to sit down with KEELHAUL's drummer Will Scheft to discuss the stupidity of touring, mainstream music, corn dogs and LeBron James.Crustcake: How long have you played drums? Will Scheft: How long have I been personally playing? Um, about 30 years.Crustcake: You

Nate Williams - We Don't Need Another Anti-Hero (2007) The Milwaukee, Wisconsin band Call Me Lightning 's billion eyes allure and billion hooks convince. The title track off their 2007 album Soft Skeletons sweeps etherial like And You'll Know Us By The Trail of the Dead's "Another Morning Stoner" until punctured by Hot Hot Heat dance guitar and shout vocals. Overall, it's an impressive piece of passionate rock that is consistently dynamic and hardcore sensitive. [...]
After a promising debut, Call Me Lightning disappoint with a routine sophomore effort.
Call Me Lightning recently signed to French Kiss and released their sophomore album, Soft Skeletons . The fact that they found a home at FK should give you a rough idea of what to expect from their sound. And if your thinking angular guitars, a danceable beat, vocals that are a little rough around the edges, and a bass line that drives the music, then your right on target. While their style may be similar to others, their execution is superb, making Call Me Lightning definitely a band worth checking [...]
I just got back from seeing Pan's Labyrinth , and let me tell you - that movie is a total laugh riot! With all the brutality and bloodshed and death, it's amazing anybody could leave the movie theater smiling. Oh, wait...I meant to type, "It's the most depressing movie I've seen in ages." I did laugh a lot watching Lindsey continually squirm through torture scenes. On a scale of ONE-to-BLOOD, I rate this movie BLOOD. It begged for the tagline, "A flood of blood bloodier than any blood bled before." Hey, Sunday Mix Tape! [...]

Call Me Lightning - Billion Eyes (2007) Call Me Lightning - Soft Skeletons / Frenchkiss After a week listening to minimalist house, wooded noise walks and icy folk wonderlands, I thought I'd warm myself up with some more traditional "rockist" stuff coming out of the periphery of the pop camp. Call Me Lightning are first up and, after apologizing to The Detachment Kit for calling them Frenchkissers (They self-released + ), I thought I'd redeem myself a bit by calling lightning out for what it is: [...]
