Kobo Town: Independence self-released buy CD/hear samples Kobo Town is the result, to some extent, of a revelation by founder and bandleader Drew Gonsalves (left). Growing up in Dieto Martin, Trinidad, he hungered for foreign status symbols like running shoes, and was ashamed when his father brought home a new pair of shoes with the label "Made in Trinidad and Tobago." In the liner notes to Independence, Gonsalves writes about the widespread dismissal of the homegrown in favor of the foreign, [...]

This is a great game, this, and perfect for a rainy Friday afternoon. It's a distraction. Seeing as I'm not going to get around to submitting for next weeks Contrast Podcast, on the theme of chickens and other birds, I thought I might as well do a bird-fruit-flower-fish for today's post. And why not? It's an easy game to play, just pick a bunch of categories then a random letter and get 10 points for a unique answer, 5 points if shared with one of the other players. Work is really productive at the moment. Note [...]
I can't remember another election in my lifetime where so many other voters agreed with me on so many things. Instead of fighting off despair on election night, I watched with a calm smile on my face, hopeful that some degree of change might be afoot. The most relished defeat was of two men not even on the ballot: Bush and Rumsfeld. Funny how quickly they changed their tune about so many things following Tuesday's wake-up call. I don't put a lot of stock in the Democrats. Just wanted to make that [...]
I was originally going to post about the Orange Sky , probably the biggest Trinidadian alt.rock band but I felt that while worthy enough, I shouldn't feel pressured into looking at music which isn't overly commercial. So, I went with the heart and chose soca. Now, I don't know a lot about soca. I know that the original of Who Let The Dogs Out was a soca track, and I know one other song (by Superblue ) from a compilation, and from that I can gather that whatever I'm doing, the people singing the [...]

Today in Music History: In 1969 the hotly anticipated, self-titled debut album by Led Zeppelin enters the album charts, ultimately reaching #10. Once upon a time I went through this huge reggae phase. Actually you couldn't even call it that. Calypso, reggae, soca, dancehall, I was soaking it all up as fast as I could get hold of it. Some of my faves are Peter Tosh, Yellowman, Jimmy Cliff, Harry Belafonte and of course Eddy Grant. Some of you may be thinking what, no [...]
