I've been sitting on this album for a while now, it's one that slipped between cracks of my bespoke tracking 'system' for music submissions, but it's surfaced now it's never too late to give a shout out to great music. Canadian Cam Penner first came to my attention through a rockin' track that appeared on the Volume 1 of the excellent What's Kickin' compilations, available at Zingg , that track Rye Whiskey appeared on Penner's 2006 album Felt Like a Sunday Night which he he followed by a more bare bones release [...]
Herohill, a Canadiana blog based out of Halifax, has warmed my Kanuk heart on this fine CANADA DAY with an ambitious project they released today in honor of one of our greatest Canadian folk heros, Gordon Lightfoot, the man behind anthems like "The Great Canadian Railroad Trilogy" and "If You Could Read My Mind". Gordie's the bomb and so are his timeless songs, so it's rad that Herohill commissioned severa l Canadian artists (+ one American) to record original covers of his songs they then collected into a compilation album titled Turning Back The Pages Of My Sweet Shattered Dreams, a [...]

Yes, it is Canada Day and here is my Canadian content. Fine. ~~~ NEW stuff from The Deep Dark Woods' upcoming album The Place I Left Behind : (album due August 2nd on Six Shooter Records) "Westside Street" (see more info on the new album and tour dates via Exclaim.ca ) ~~ Herohill vs. Gordon Lightfoot: Turning Back The Pages Of My [...]

Our friends over at Hero Hill have outdone themselves on this fine Canada Day . They put together a tribute to Gordon Lightfoot from some of my favorite Canadian indie artists including the Warped 45s , Cam Penner , and The Schomberg Fair . Turning Back the Pages of My Sweet Shattered Dreams contains 36 tracks covering nearly all of Lightfoot's career. Go over to Hero Hill and download this tribute pronto! Cam Penner [...]

So hear it is. The result of months of hard work from some of our favorite bands across this nation (and even a special cameo from one of our favorite American outfits). Basically, the idea was simple: Pay tribute to a Canadian legend on Canada Day. Oh, and get some free content for the blog of course. In all seriousness, Gordon Lightfoot has been making music for decades and his stories are passed from generation to generation. Unfortunately, when asked about the greatest Canadian songwriters, Gordon is often left off the list. [...]

Cam Penner released Trouble & Mercy a little over a year ago and I pretty much assumed he was on the fast track to, at the very least, blog darling. Blogs left and right were writing about him, heaping enough praise on him to make Lady GaGa blush. With Gypsy Summer he's released an admittedly more mature and accessible record that's also a decidedly better record than Trouble and Mercy ( which made my Top 20 albums of 2009 ), but there's barely been a ripple across the blogger community outside the [...]

In the digital age, it's almost impossible for an artist to slip through the cracks if you pay attention. Endless retweets and self-congratulating humble brags, facebook events mailed to distribution lists and emails that flood your inbox become suffocating. Thankfully, their are still a few surprises left in this big world. A few weeks ago, I logged in and realized Cam Penner had a new record ready for the masses. Starkly contrasting the stripped down Trouble & Mercy , Gypsy Summer finds Penner experimenting with [...]

I'm on vacation in the Keys so this post is not getting the attention it deserves from me but I hope that won't hinder you from giving it all of your attention and focus. Cam Penner has a new record out called Gypsy Summer that immediately struck me as both more personal and more accessible than his terrific 2009 release Trouble and Mercy (wrote about it here ). I was happy to see that Cam himself feels the same way when he stated: "Gypsy Summer is a [...]

I hope you readers are also following my other "night job" of running Yer Bird Records ...(waits while sound of crickets gets louder...)...as we have been slowly but surely announcing updates on our upcoming compilation CD set for release this Summer. I had said to myself repeatedly that I would do my best to not cross pollinate with my blogger life here at Slowcoustic - in other words, I have a pseudo financial interest in Yer Bird doing well so it is hard to promote it without feeling like I am pandering to you all to "buy my [...]

A few months ago, Craig over @ songsillinois.net started a 'finger pointing, pass the buck session' amongst a few Canadian bloggers that enjoy the roots music. " Sure, I might have missed out on Cam Penner, but so did X, Y and Z! And they live closer to him !" Since that time, it's been nice to see Cam's record - Trouble & Mercy ( review ) - show up on some best of lists and really shine a light on the amazing Alberta roots/country scene, but more importantly it's made me recalibrate my [...]

Hello Slowcousticals, I bring you a weekend playlist because I don't have a feature post (let's just be honest here). There isn't even a compromise though because there is some really great music included. If you are a regular reader or are a member of the Last.fm group, you know I am a bit of a playlist fiend. So enough with the blather and let's get to your weekend soundtrack! Slowcoustic Saturday Playlist (November Edition) ~ Wonder Stranger [...]

I absolutely hate it when super blogger Craig Bonnell beats us to the punch on little known roots artists living in the Great White North. Not because he doesn't constantly offer up DIY gems for his readers, but because I like to think we have our finger on the (Canadian) pulse here at the Hill when it comes to an incredible talent like Manitoba's Cam Penner , well, we should have been in the know. Cam's new record, Trouble & Mercy is devastating. The songs were written on a six month [...]

When I was making my internet rounds of all things roots music there was one name on the Americana charts that I didn't recognize. Mixed in with Lyle Lovett, Kris Kristofferson, Roseanne Cash and Guy Clark was Cam Penner . Cam Penner is from Southern Manitoba, his bio describes a rich life spent traveling the country performing with some of the greats (Flatlanders, John Prine, Glen Cambell). He's a completely indie artist putting out his own records and booking his own tours. In that way he's like many of the artists featured on Songs:Illinois. That [...]
