After a week spent listening to psychedelic rock n' roll, I needed something to cleanse the spirits. I just wanted something refreshing and fun, something to get me back into the mood for a relaxing week, and Allo' Darlin and the Wave Pictures definitely helped me out. Read on for thoughts on all the night's acts and sweet photos from B. Gray. No Future , the band formerly known as Leatherbag , started off the night for us all, and I think the change in name [...]

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars Allo Darlin ’ are a four piece indie/twee pop band that hail from London, and if you haven’t gotten to know their dazzlingly sweet tunes, then it is time you started. Their self-titled first album was released back in 2010, but if you want to get to know the sweet and groovy tunes of this band then look no further, Europe is an excellent place to start. [...]

San Cisco have been plugging away in their native Australia releasing a debut release and catching the eye of famed radio station Triple J along the way. The band recently released their sophomore EP 'Awkward' offering up a lo-fi, quirky and upbeat mix of tracks that have stamped a smile on my face for the past [...]
Allo Darlin’ hits a sweet spot with upbeat tunes about the in-between parts of life.

I've been digging through my old records lately and I can't believe just how awesome music was between 2003 and 2007. This awesomeness has inspired a new series, The Throwback Mix Series , which will be a six or seven installment set of mixes each containing 20 songs that I loved during that time span - and each mix will be completely rad. Spread the word and be sure to support the artists you enjoy. Neutral Milk Hotel - "Holland, 1945" [...]

This is a solid, sonically beautiful album by Katy Goodman of the excellent band, Vivian Girls.

I haven't had much time of late to write. The house project of repainting walls, painting trim, pulling up carpets, and laying down bamboo has absolutely dominated my time. That and working on my BMW, which in the past few weeks has received a full tune-up (with exception of replacing points and cleaning the carb). I'm hoping that come mid-week, I'll be back in my normal post routine. As time has been limited, I thought "Desert Island Picks" would be a good topic for the week. Unfortunately, I left off [...]
Words by Rick Moslen OK—I know the Billboard charts are pointless these days (at least to me), but when Merge Records hit #1 with Arcade Fire ’s The Suburbs album—I don’t know—I felt like a dad whose skinny unpopular son kicked the asses of the high school bullies…I was proud. The label was intended as a means to help local bands by releasing 7”s. Over twenty years later, after changing all your friends’ music taste with albums by The Magnetic Fields , Neutral Milk Hotel , Mountain Goats , [...]
Tweet Dory Previn (née Shannon) passed away Tuesday February 14th, at the age of 86. According to her husband, Joby Baker, she passed at her farm in Southfield, Massachusetts of natural causes. A dignified, peaceful passing for a woman who for years led a life colored by dark memories of a grim childhood, marital infidelity, and mental illness. Born October 25, 1925 in Rahway, New Jersey, she was the eldest daughter in the Shannon family: a strict, [...]

The Oscars are this Sunday, and 2011 was a forgettable year in cinema. I can't honestly say that I've seen a great movie in a long time, though, I've only seen four out of the nine movies up for "Best Picture." The stage appears to be set for "the Artist" to win big in which makes Harvey Weinstein look like a genius. The one movie I regret not catching while in theatres in 3D is the Martin Scorsese film not starring Joe Pesci, "Hugo," based on the children's book. "The Help's" supporting cast should win "Best Supporting [...]

We were initially apprehensive when we heard Princeton were taking a minimalist orchestral approach to the songs for their new album Remembrance of Things to Come, released yesterday. It wasn't until we heard the album via a Paste full album stream that we realized their charming west coast pop sensibilities were still intact, and in fact - better than ever. This is a more mature band, and one that has honed their song-craft for the second LP. Indeed including flashes of orchestral minimalism, their new songs still feature the wistful vocals we've come to love from [...]

Grab the spacey reworking of Princeton's new album title track.
Posted in General Clickable This week's chilled Sunday Supp is from one of my favourite bands, Camera Obscura. Glasgow's lovelorn melody makers, with the emotive voice of Tracyanne Campbell up front. Country Mile is a beautiful tune, so sit back and let your mind drift. Hope you enjoy. If you do go check out what else they got. There's [...]

Tweet As the story goes, when Frànçois Marry arrived in Bristol, England from France in 2003, he wrote a note accompanied by a picture asking for people to make music together with, taped it in his window, then proceeded to check out local car boot sales for instruments. Starting out with a hodgepodge of found instruments (including a keyboard he played with his foot), Frànçois began playing live in Bristol in early 2004. 2005 - 2007 saw him collaborating with various local [...]

S2D We don't normally publicise DJ nights but we'll make an exception with this one, as we'd go if we weren't all cockney oiks who suffer vertigo north of Watford... On Friday 24th February, London's indiepop/post-punk hosts, Scared to Dance ventures north to Glasgow for a special night where Tracyanne Campbell from Camera Obscura hits the DJ decks. Full details: Date: Friday 24th February, 9pm-3am [...]

Tweet vaso link As we usher in the new year, I find myself listening to some of my most loved records from years past that I forced myself to stop listening to after playing them out to death. Every year I perpetuate the seemingly unjust habit of deleting all the music on my computer and settling into a new year with fresh sounds. This is certainly a shame for all the records I skipped over or paid little enough attention to, but I always [...]
