Lunice, the 23-year-old Canadian taking the electronic world by storm right now, is really just making rap beats. His stuff is a little too forward thinking to have someone rapping over it, though. The Mad Decent signee occupies the unique intersection between hip-hop and dance music, and we caught up with him to find out what he's been listening to lately to try to get an inside look at what makes him tick, and what leads to the music he's been putting out. Decibel – "G.A.P." [...]

Planet Asia - Goldenstate (Prod. Dirty Diggs) Named after a 1980s Saturday-afternoon TV show and inspired by Planet Asia's favorite films, Black Belt Theatre combines the violent precision of classic kung-fu flicks with the calculated cool of classic blaxploitation movies. "I wanted to make the album like a movie, something you would see in a theater," says Asia. "That's why it has so many features. All the guests feel like different characters in the movie." These guests include veterans like Raekwon, Talib Kweli, Paul Wall, Ras Kass, Camp Lo, and [...]

One thing Knx has a knack for aside from crafting amazing beats, is reworking songs from other artists. His sound is distinct, so when you hear these remixes it breathes new life into them and they sound like completely different songs. The past few EPs have been primarily instrumentals, but this project (aptly titled WrapTaypes.Port.1 ) is a set of hip hop remixes. I pulled out a few of my favorites here. Head over to his Bandcamp and support the man. He's out here killing it. [...]

Nothing to Lose is maybe the fourth best soundtrack to a Martin Lawrence vehicle made between House Party and Blue Streak . After all, even when they were mediocre, all rap soundtracks from the 90s look pretty good in hindsight. Hip hop was supposed to have sucked since '96, but c'mon. For Nothing to Lose , Tommy Boy organized the proceedings and had the budget and foresight to tap Outkast, Camp Lo, Buckwild, Naughty By Nature, Master P & Tru, C-N-N, 8 Ball & MJG, and Latifah for their B-sides. There's also [...]

We thought we were crazy booking Camp Lo days after the Rock The Bells Boston melt-down , but turns out this is the most attention we've ever had for ANY Fresh Produce. Got damn the homie went the fuck IN on one of my all time favorite beats of all time. I posted this on our facebook fan page but forgot to make it ChiLLLLLLL official. My b. Check it out.
I had a little Tribe Called Quest moment this week, seeing the trailer for the new documentary , watching this video of Q-Tip and Kanye West doing "Award Tour" in Brooklyn , and then hearing Midnight Marauders when my brilliant wife happened to put it on. I don't really listen to hip hop that often, but this three-fer sent me down a little rabbit hole of nostalgia for some of my favorite hip hop albums of that era. Join me in the rabbit hole, won't you? A Tribe Called Quest: [...]

Camp Lo's Geechi Suede and Little Brother's Rapper Big Pooh hit the street and turn up their booming system on yet another future classic from 80 Blocks From Tiffany's. Pete Rock finds a new way to make use of David Porter's classic, oft-sampled "The Masquerade is Over" to complete the cipher. 80 Blocks From Tiffany's Feat. Rapper Big Pooh - "Booming System"
Man, Pete Rock is a busy dude. As we have heard over the past few months , he and Smif N Wessun collaborated on a full-length album, Monumental , which actually dropped today. And when he wasn't working on that, the producer-rapper was in the studio with Camp Lo. They're gearing up to release a sequel to this past March's 80 Blocks From Tiffany's soon, so if you haven't heard that mixtape yet make sure you jump on it soon. Or, you know, you can wait [...]

Two for two on the soulful joints today, with Pete Rock and Camp-Lo(ah) releasing another song under the banner of their 80 Blocks From Tiffanys project. Technically, this leaked a few weeks back, but I was sunning myself on a Mediterranean island at the time (it's what I do), so I missed it. But I like this more than today's leak from 80 Blocks, so I figure there's no harm in going for higher quality over newness , right? The tune I've gone for today - a remix of 'Pot [...]

Another week, another leak from the 80 Blocks from Tiffany's camp. This time around, Pete Rock flips a sample from one of his own classics and contributes a verse as well as some of his signature helium-induced adlibs. "No Hook (Ambassadors Theme)" is another sneak-peek at Volume 2 of the 80 Blocks mixtape series-if tracks like this are the promo material, one can only imagine what there is to look forward to on the album. 80 Block From Tiffany's (Camp Lo & Pete Rock) - "No Hook [...]
