With the introduction of new do-everything cellphones, and hacks for said phones that allow your own ringtones, it's time for us to start making our own. I'll start with some straight loops. A robotic, futuristic, George Jetson ringtone: Craig Mack - "Flava In Ya Ear (Ringtone)" Geechie Suede got cha wiiiide: Camp Lo - "Luchini (Ringtone)" 100x times better than "Axel F": Van Halen - [...]

Cal Tjader: Leyte From Soul Sauce (Verve, 1964) Camp Lo: Sparkle From Uptown Saturday Night (Profile, 1997) 45 King feat. Latee: Brainstorm From For DJs Only EP (45 King Records, 198?) Maurice Davis: Mr. Lonely From 7" (BeeGee, 197?) I've spent the last week or so slaving over an assignment involving classic funk tunes and frankly, if I hear another Commodores or Ohio Players [...]

Since day one, Camp Lo have always been Hollywood. Their technicolor tales could only fit on the big screen: blaxploitation fantasies of bloody Bronx shoot-outs, slick diamond heists and jet-black getaway cars gunning it 100 miles per on the Bronx Expressway, plane to Aruba waiting at Teterboro. All matinee style: swaggering in fly panama hats, Oscar Gamble afros, and floor-length minks. And, of course, the finest weed, wine, and women stolen money could buy. Speaking with Byzantine slang, the duo of Chiba and Suede dropped a classic on their first try, 1997's Uptown Saturday Night , a [...]

Recent posts by Gorilla vs. Bear and Passion of the Weiss on the return of Camp Lo got me sorta amped about the good ol' days, which always means digging through a little vinyl. I have two Camp Lo 12-inches from the great Uptown Saturday Night – one for Black Nostaljack (Come On) and the other for Luchini aka (This is It) . I've yet to listen to In Black Hollywood – Weiss calls it a contender for hip-hop album of the year – but damn if [...]

Camp Lo is the real deal. These cats just don't quit. It's unlikely they'll ever re-live the success of Luchini ( "This Is It, WHAT?!" ) and they will be seen as a one hit wonder because of it but SERIOUSLY... they haven't stopped or changed. They are still doing their thing, though very under the radar now. Uptown Saturday Night is a classic in my eyes. The slang was think, the beats were nuts and it was hypnotic! When that shit dropped, I had no idea what those cats were sayin [...]

As Joey aptly put it yesterday morning, the just leaked Camp Lo in Black Hollywood , is a legitimate contender for best hip-hop album of the year. Especially considering '07 has been nothing but aging veterans trying to make classics past their prime, against all the odds. Redman was solid but unspectacular and loaded with filler. Prodigy was good but honestly, that isn't the Prodigy of old, we all know that. Pharoahe was on some Andre 3000 shit. Again, good but no Internal Affairs or Stress. The entire second half of Devin the Dude was a throwaway. [...]

Break out the tims & chukkas! Camp Lo is black- er, I mean, 'back'! You know Sonny Cheeba & Geechie Suede be sippin' amaretto but did you know they are also slated to release a new album on July 24th?! This news had me buggin' as their 1997 album Uptown Saturday Night changed my vocabulary & also my life. Here's the title track off the forthcoming album (via gorilla vs bear who got it from Spine Mag ) MP3: [...]
Rest assured, Joey " Straight Bangin " and I are putting in work, trying to import the many ballots we received into spreadsheet form. Sadly, it takes a whole lot of time, so don't expect a full list until at least late next week. All apologies. In the meantime, here's a look at the next 25 that didn't make my ballot. 50. Atmosphere- Overcast! Before concluding that 2Pac was right when [...]

i fell off, i admit it. but, i'm back. no excuses... let's get on with it. Lifesavas are back from their 3+ year departure with Gutterfly . the follow-up isn't as good as i expected, but that's always the way it goes. this is still new in my rotation but there's a few standout cuts already and a few surprises. first is Double Up - and it is straight up funky and the first cut on this album that stuck out. a [...]

I don't know what your high school was like, but around '96, '97 when Wu-Tang Clan was at their finest everyone in our school was all up on the East Coasts nuts. Throngs of students were coming to school geared up in bubble jackets & ear muffs in 80 degree weather. Timberland boots all untied & pants stuffed into the top of socks. Blond haired, blue-eyed California teens, born & raised all of a sudden had New York accents & every other word that came out of their mouth was 'nawimeankid'. Here's some beats that [...]

Cause you know, big heads and soft bodies make for lousy… (photo cred: greendrz ) Being 20-something in American society these days is like entering a war zone. The list of opportunities that are being rewarded in our economy is narrowing, and the dichotomy between rich and poor is perpetually widening. For those of us pursuing careers in vocational-intensive professions, we have to face workdays becoming longer, credentials becoming more rigid, competition becoming more fierce. We are the crash-test babies of an increasingly structuralized state of capitalism. Ultimately, I believe the system is fair [...]

Here are our top 25 lists finally. Also check out the Product Shop lists: Albums , EPs , and Singles . 1) The Hold Steady - Boys and Girls in America When I first heard Boys and Girls in America , I don't think I would have predicted it would be my favorite for the year. I thought that the polished production and careful arrangements violated the realness of my favorite bar band. But Craig Finn has left his lyrical stomping grounds of [...]

Finally, I'm in my new place with electricity and internet! I appreciate all your patience and I hope you've missed me as much as I've missed you. Listening Assignments! 1. Inlets - Pictures of Trees - This dude Sebastien is in My Brightest Diamond with Shara Worden (who sings on all the Sufjan Stevens recordings) and this is his side project. Very Sufjan-esque with banjos and quivering falsetto harmonies. Still, it's got a little unique spice that keeps me pressing play. [from Vestibule | download [...]
