A coworker sent me the song "Closer" by San Francisco duo Camp Out, and I kinda dig it. It's not the most complex or experimental indie pop I've heard, but it's fun, the production is clean, and I love the lead singer's voice. [...]
Backseat Beat is a video series highlighting indie musicians and the city by the Bay. Armed with Flip cameras, we interview bands in the back seat of our '83 Volvo as we spirit them away to unexpected, forgotten corners of San Francisco, where they plug in outdoors to play a few tunes. Each band's performance transforms these urban spots from their anonymous day to day existence into surreal, magical backdrops. In episode 2 of Backseat Beat, we get up close and personal with Camp Out . [...]

DIY doesn't get much better than this. Camp Out is a fairly new addition to the Bay Area indie scene, comprised of Maddy Hanks and Jackie Law as both musicians and proficient multi-taskers. Camp Out's self-produced debut album is entitled Closer , and is out now via Swordfish Records , the band's own label that they run with fellow local musician Shaw . The music within Closer is everything you already know and enjoy from the best sources of female-led indie pop - Tegan and Sara, [...]

Eight seconds in to Closer , the new release by San Francisco pop duo Camp Out , and you are immediately dispatched to the mid-90s. And not just the mid-90s, but a very particular time and head space of that bygone decade: the girl rock that charged both coasts, but particularly the left one, and frequently dominated alt-rock radio programming and top tens. Even now, in an era where writing things like girl rock seems offensive and limiting, one cannot but help to get a positive vibe when thinking about bands like Belly, Elastica, Mazzy Star, and Garbage. [...]

Thought I should get some new music out of the way before the new year hits us (granted, I do have close to a week before that happens, but I wanted to get my best tracks and remixes lists out before the end of the decade). Anyway, tracks. There's a whole big mixture of stuff here. Just what this blog is all about i suppose...bit of everything. First up is a bit of electronica kinda stuff. Paqman are from Melbourne/Canberra (strange mix I know.). Their track Donno is a really nice kinda chilled track [...]

You've probably heard of Austin, Texas' Spoon . If not, you should go out and buy one of their albums today. Any one of 'em because they are all great. Heck, buy them all. Read one of our previous Spoon posts . Also, if you are following Musical Pairings on Twitter you are probably also aware that they have finished a new album titled Transference with a January release date. Below is the MP3 that made the rounds yesterday of the album's third [...]
All this week, I've been going through my overstuffed inbox and sorting out the best bands that sent music my way . It's been a lot funner than I expected, so I'll definitely try to do this more often. A reminder: though this has certainly showcased several bands who deserve greater exposure, this has mainly served as proof that I'm pretty awful at writing music reviews (see yesterday's entry ). If you read these and feel that – somehow – you'd like me to check out your band for possible review, head over to the Submissions section, give it [...]
