Live Video: Damien Jurado

Live Video: Damien Jurado photo by Renata Steiner ( more photos ) Since his first in-studio appearance back in 2003, Seattle songwriter Damien Jurado has been a frequent guest on the Morning Show and even wrote the "John in the Morning" theme, which you'll hear promptly at 6AM every weekday. Each of his new albums warrants tons of airplay and finds him back in-studio in a variety of configurations: solo or with a band, acoustic or plugged in. Following up his expansive new album - the excellent Secretly Canadian released Maraqopa - Jurado brought his biggest [...]

The Seattle Music Scene: "Something In The Water"

Something in the Water (trailer) | KCTS 9 Documentary
At least half of the music I post about these days is from Seattle, partly because that's what I'm surrounded with, but also because it's a great spot for music. I was inspired by a short PBS documentary about modern Seattle music. It's only 13 minutes long and gives you a quick rundown of Seattle [...]

City Arts Fest 2011 - The Long Winters, Pickwick, Sons of Warren Oates

City Arts Fest 2011 - The Long Winters, Pickwick, Sons of Warren Oates John Roderick of The Long Winters at the Showbox, October 20, part of City Arts Fest 2011 My recap and photos from my limp around City Arts Fest 2011 are up over at Bumpershine right now . Highlight was easily the set from The Long Winters. Having John Roderick backed by high school students (Seattle's School of Rock) might be the best indie rock idea since the 4-track. Other performances captured include Pickwick, Campfire OK, Cobirds Unite and a transcendent set from Sons of Warren Oates.

City Arts Festival 2011 Recap (Seattle, WA)

City Arts Festival 2011 Recap (Seattle, WA) John Roderick of The Long Winters at City Arts Festival (10/20/11) Words and Photos : Drake Lelane Heineken City Arts Festival 2011 (Seattle, WA) After a fairly disorganized first year, the second annual City Arts Fest is starting to look more like an actual festival instead of a weekend of shows tied together in signage only. Many shows were located at least in the same neighborhood, so there was at least the opportunity this year to jump between some venues. Sadly, I had [...]

Recommendations: City Arts Fest on Thursday

The second annual City Arts Fest gets the weekend started early this Thursday with something for just about everybody: punk rock at the Comet, a soulful sold out show at The Triple Door, some of Seattle's finest songwriters at the Showbox, a dance party at The Paramount and more. We'll be sharing our daily City [...]

Cathedrals Show: Bryan John Appleby and Gold Leaves etc.

Bryan John Appleby - Backseat
Last night I enjoyed one of my favorite shows in a long time. Picture this: myself and my friend Kelsey lying on a bright colored hippie blanket, ten feet away from the stage where 6 different performers do an acoustic set with impeccable sound, and all this taking place in the gorgeous St. Mark's Cathedral [...]

Cathedrals One featuring Bryan John Appleby, Mark Pickerel, Grant Olsen of Gold Leaves & More

Bryan John Appleby "Noah's Nameless Wife"
There are two reasons I go to church: weddings and funerals. But thanks to the folks from The Fremont Abbey, it looks like I'm going to have to add a third reason: concerts. With incredible acoustics. By some of my very favorite artists. On October 1st the folks behind The Round are taking their inspiring [...]

Festival Review: CoS at Capitol Hill Block Party 2011

Festival Review: CoS at Capitol Hill Block Party 2011 The block party on my pathetic block in Chicago is pretty much a glorified bake sale with a shitty bouncy castle which I'm not even allowed to bounce in. So the leap from my wholly depressing, completely sober, and awkward neighborhood reunion to the Capitol Hill Block Party is a paradigm shift to be sure. And to boot, it's less of a block party and more of a bona fide music festival that just happens to take place on Pike Street between 10 th and 12 th . But the focus on the Seattle/Capitol Hill district community [...]

Campfire Ok Brings The Folk

Campfire Ok Brings The Folk Photo courtesy of Laurie Clark Seattle, Washington was once known for its producing of grunge acts such as, Nirvana, Soundgarden and Pearl Jam. Now, Seattle has placed their attention on the ever-growing indie rock movement; you have the ethereal, multi-instrumentalists in Fleet Foxes, and very soon you will have Campfire OK invading your ear canals. Yes, Campfire Ok borrows a little bit from their older brother Fleet Foxes, but the band is absolutely all their own. Thumping drums, spine-tingling harmonies and spontaneous explosions of staccato, brass goodness, make Campfire Ok a band that will reel [...]
