The Boy Scouts of America, generally concerned with explicitly heterosexual activities such as wearing jaunty uniforms and tying fancy knots, decided that they may now consider allowing some of the gays in, so everyone will just shut up already about what jerks they're being. More specifically, they are considering a resolution stating that "no youth may be denied membership in the Boy Scouts of America on the basis of sexual orientation or preference alone." It hasn't passed yet and won't be voted on until May 20th. Let's all stop for a second [...]

They say it’s all in the name, an adage that Chicago-based indie outfit Campfires seems to have taken to heart. Their debut full-length album, Tomorrow, Tomorrow , with its self-tagged lo-fi noise-pop billing, screams rusticity with every note and flickers as warm and balmy as the namesake of the band who created it. The album’s sound is fairly consistent — something that band member Jeff Walls readily owns up to as a deliberate move, describing the album as having a new kind of cohesion. Each track on the album is tied together in the same fashion, featuring [...]
Somewhere in the Pacific Northwest there lives the ghost of some great folkloric deity, a celestial being that energizes the region with the gift of storytelling and individuality. When Jeff Walls, better known as Campfires , moved from Chicago to Portland, this supernatural entity embodied his music and his tales, turning homespun pop into idyllic folk illustrations. On his newest record, Tomorrow, Tomorrow , Walls refines a lot of what he infected us with on 2011’s Slaughter Tropes . Less about frantic tambourine shaking and more focused on palatable, toe-tapping rhythms, Tomorrow, Tomorrow ’s foundation [...]
by Maxwell Silver For a few years now, the In Dee Mail series has been a popular on-going feature because it introduces music lovers to obscure, but talented, alternative and indie rock artists. For many of the musicians it is their first exposure by a often for the first time, to alternative and indie rock [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

Campfires is a lo-fi project that makes jangly sunshine pop in two-minute bursts. Less experimental than Woods or Olivia Tremor Control, they won't make any big waves, but they sound down for pretty much whatever. [...]

Unabashed psych-pop can be a beautiful thing. Those who indulge in the deep end of the paisley pool have a certain openness that seems to seep through like sun through blinds on a sunny summer's morning, and judging from the fact that one of the tracks on Campfires' latest is dedicated to Bill Doss, it seems safe to assume that Jeff Walls has waded into those waters for some time. Its been a while actually since Campfires graced our ears, a 7" on Mexican Summer to be exact, but the songwriting seems to have congealed into a mix of sunny [...]

Campfires is a one man band – Jeff Walls – and this is his debut under the moniker The production is fiercely lo-fi – the short sharp bursts of energy could be likened to post-punk - though the melody drifts a good fifteen years further back. What with its scratchy rhythm guitars and 60s vintage snapshot of psychedelic sunshine; Campfire’s debut is soaked with colours from the past. Yet however heavy the debt may be the sound travels light and easy – rambling through my sub-conscious with a carefree disposition and a bag full of friendly hooks. [...]
The breadth of new 2013 music releases - albums, EPs and singles - that have been coming out in recent weeks, and those set to drop in the ensuing months, have been keeping us very busy, especially when you factor in all of the DIY releases that we receive on a weekly basis, which are [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

Tomorrow, Tomorrow exemplifies Campfires' ability to produce really good, really chill lo-fi pop, without being boring.

It's a big week for new releases, so let's get right into it. First thing on your shopping list: Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds ' latest, Push The Sky Away . Fifteen albums in and Cave & Co. still create unique stunners. As our Music Director, Don Yates, says, it's "a masterful set of brooding, minimalist rock comprised of mostly slow-burning songs with rumbling guitars, mournful keyboards, eerie violin loops, stately rhythms and dark, evocative lyrics." So not so much the heavy rock of his Grinderman project, but if you're a fan if his ballads (and the [...]

If Campfires’ (solo project of Jeff Walls) upcoming record is anything like his latest single, great things are happening. With a recent move to the music Mecca that is Portland, Oregon, Walls has come a long way from the messy, jumbled, lo-fi haze of his earlier tape recordings and has developed into the creator of [...]

Jeff Walls' Campfires is prepared to drop its debut LP Tomorrow, Tomorrow on February 19 via Fire Talk Records . I knew I recognized the name; in my collection is his 73 for "Stormy Late Fall" on Mexican Summer. Once again, here's a highly limited vinyl pressed album that will be in my hands very soon. Unlike that 73 single, which is loud and raucous to a point, the debut LP features sunny lo-fi indie pop. That is to say, traits of that earlier sound exist [...]

If you've been paying attention to music blogs for any length of time, you might have run across Campfires, the project from Portlander (by way of Chicago) Jeff Walls. The first mention of his music (at least from the blogs that are picked up by Hype Machine) is back in 2009, and he's been churning out releases ever since, with various tapes and vinyl on labels just as varied as the formats he chooses to release things in. He's put out music with label dignitaries Mexican Summer and Small Plates , and now, for his newest album, [...]

Jeff Walls' messy, blown-out 602s-style garage pop recordings aren't for everyone, especially if you like your music as clean as a surgical tool. But for those who've ever pulled a well-worn Kinks LP out of a cramped vinyl bin and jammed out to the distorted crackled pop contained in its grooves, this is very clearly for you: Campfires - Fortune Teller Oh yeah, that's the stuff. Campfires' debut LP, Tomorrow Tomorrow , is out on February 19th via Fire Talk Records. [...]
Jeff Walls reveals new project Campfires Portland, Oregon singer/songwriter Jeff Walls has announced the release of a new album, Tomorrow, Tomorrow , under the monicker Campfires . Walls blends pop melodies with lo-fi garage rock arrangements, as can be heard in the album's first single, "Fortune Teller". Download the [...]

As might be expected, slightly fewer tunes make up our final monthly mix of the best of the downloads from MM - no panic tho', the quality of new tunes on offer more than makes up for it. And as always, some new ones for you too means a top banana mix of twenty cracking songs to play in the New Year. The Cheatahs - The Swan A swirling, smoking riff and a rough 'n' ready feel is mixed with 90s slacker indie influences and a bit of shoegaze - all to more than [...]

Jeff Walls recently moved to Portland from Chicago, bringing his Campfires moniker in tow, which has left behind a long breadcrumb trail of jangly, poppy recordings that have been given the blanket term "lo-fi" but are more accurately described as homegrown. There's a heavy Kinks quality to Campfires' work—a very good thing—and while these are loud, brash guitar numbers, the emphasis is on songwriting as opposed to noise. A new Campfires record is due out on February 19 on the Fire Talk label— Tomorrow, Tomorrow will be the first full-length vinyl that Campfires have put [...]
