20. THE CLEAN | Mister Pop [Merge] A band that releases five albums in 30 years isn't exactly what you would call prolific. Still, it's hard to hold anything against the Clean. Between Robert Scott and brothers David and Hamish Kilgour, the three members have released more than 30 albums with other projects. Knowing this [...]
Back in December you might have heard me hollerin' about Philly's Canadian Invasion and their Solid rock and roll in the same vein as R.E.M. and Wilco. They've just released a new video for the track "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow" from their album Three Cheers For The Invisible Hand . You could say this has a little bit o' commentary on suburban American life... mp3: Canadian Invasion - Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow The video was put together by They're Using [...]

Last week, Philadelphia's Canadian Invasion played in the hometown's legendary North Star Bar with New Jersey's The Yarrows and Cut Off Your Hands all the way from New Zealand. The Yarrows got the show off to a slow start with their drugged out, mellow tunes. After Canadian Invasion took the stage, the energy in the room increased tenfold, thanks to the band's fun and poppy sound and front man Andy Canadian 's (guitar, vocals) fictional anecdotes, kicking off with recent release Three Cheers For [...]

Canadian Invasion 's take on American culture comes straight from the source. Yes, the five-man group hails from the City of Brotherly Love and their music chips away at the bark of the society that brought them up. Just don't expect their sound to have a strictly American feel. Three Cheers from the Invisible Hand , Canadian Invasion's latest LP, runs far from bitter as their satirical style sways with a well-thought out progression of melodic string play keyed along Andy Canadian's vocal tutelage. "Our songs are a [...]

It is time once again for the round-up of the weekends musical events coming to the IA area. Not as packed as past weekends, but it is a little front heavy. Friday is absolutely loaded, before it slows down for Saturday and Sunday. Here's who is playing Friday and those going on to other regional locales afterwards: Dinosaur Jr. Photo by Johannes Scherman When certain bands get back together and tour, it's almost tragic. I'm not going to [...]

Still hot off the release of Three Cheers For The Invisible Hand , hometown boys Canadian Invasion will be playing Philadelphia's legendary North Star Bar this Saturday with The Yarrows and Cut Off Your Hands . The fellas also recently finished a video for "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow", which you can peep here. Created by They're Using Tools, the video begins at a yard sale and turns into an animated world when a yard sale goer picks up a viewfinder. [...]

It's a mouthful, but it has to be said: today's episode of the contrast podcast finishes looking at the best of 2009 (so far) part two. My pick ( Fanfarlo ) was in last week's show but you should definitely check it out this week, too, which you can do right here . Next week we're moving on and the theme will be "Yes," so please say yes and join in the fun. I've been thinking a [...]

Some photos from this past Sunday's Bag of Songs Night @ M Room in Philadelphia with Canadian Invasion , Golden Bloom and Sudden Ensemble . Many many thanks to everyone who came out and all of the bands who trekked through the freaky early evening hail storm to get to Philly and deliver an excellent night of music. Jim Foley & Chris Morita Of Canadian Invasion George Groves(drums) And Eric Miller of Canadian [...]

I thought I would never say this, but the weekend is finally coming to an end. Fortunately (for me), Sunday is much lighter in action than the past two nights. Don't forget to check out Friday and Saturday for bands that are playing multiple dates. Canadian Invasion (via bands myspace) The M-Room is hosting a great line-up featuring indie-popsters Golden Bloom and Philly's own Canadian Invasion . Rounding out the show is Jersey City's [...]

I've been raving about Canadian Invasion 's new record, Three Cheers For The Invisible Hand to just about anyone who cares to listen ever since I got an early preview a year or so ago. It's one of 2009's best records so far, filled with darkly satirical lyrics surrounded in gorgeous chiming guitar pop.[ More ] The boys delivered a standout show to a packed World Cafe Live a couple of weeks ago at their CD Release party, so don't miss out on what promises to be a just as amazing a show in the more intimate [...]

Since we're super excited about Golden Bloom 's return to Philadelphia - they play at the M Room this Sunday, March 29th as part of Bag of Song 's monthly showcase along with Sudden Ensemble and local act Canadian Invasion - as is front man Shawn Fogel , we're giving away 3 signed copies of the band's debut 73 along with some sweet stickers. Golden Bloom - "Doomsday Devices" To enter to win one of three signed 73 by [...]

Yeah, it is about that time for bands to migrate southward towards Austin and the music festival know as SXSW. Philly and Baltimore are very sparse, DC has a bit more. Guess we will see a surge in the coming weeks as bands come home or continue their tours. Still, some great shows to see this weekend. Here is what's happening: Bell X1 (via bands myspace) With their new album Blue Lights on the Runway just released [...]

Here's one I've been listening to for quite a while now, but now it finally saw it's offical release yesterday so you can too. Canadian Invasion 's Three Cheers For The Invisible Hand is my favorite record released so far in this still young year, and one that I can pretty confidently say will have a spot in the best of 2009 list when December rolls around. It's a record filled with soaring melodic pop songs that embed themselves in your subconscious, a sound that a friend who I played it for likened to a mix of [...]
