Words by Jim First it was winter, then it was summer, and now it's spring. Doesn't make any sense, but that's ok. I'm not too worried about it, are you? The weather always sorts itself out. But what this strange fluctuating weather has reminded me of is that I really do enjoy that slow crawl into spring that we experience here in Pennsylvania. The nights are still cold. The breeze can still cut you to the bone if you're not careful. April showers bring May flowers, right? The gloom of that grey period between [...]

"Frank John James' Romanstrumentals are probably the best tranquilizer you can buy today. It soothes. It warms. It mellows. And, it makes you glow all over. When you hear a James arrangement, somehow the words of a song seem unimportant. The Romanstrumental itself is so lyrical, the phrasing and punctuation is so precise, that each sample Frank plays becomes a personal love note. In this new Romanstrumental beat tape, Frank has selected 29 beautiful beats that almost require candles, champagne and a reminiscent mood for listening. So. Turn off the lights and let Frank turn on your heart with these [...]
Rolling Stone interviews the artist behind the "Half a Person" Morrissey candle. Is it based upon a particular image of Morrissey? It's not based on any image in particular. Rather, it's a synthesis of his greatest and most iconic qualities in an idealized and heroic pose. With this in mind, I worked very closely with my sculptor friend Sean Burford. His work typically involves comic book heroes, so I thought that type of dynamism and cleanness would be perfect for "Half a Person." I knew he'd kill it on [...]

I spent twenty years in Southern California, and eventually wrote a number of articles about the fabulous summer music festivals that pop up every season: the Ojai Festival, Carmel Bach Festival, Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, not to mention all the myriad activities at the Hollywood Bowl. But looking over the 20th Anniversary season programs for the Bach Dancing and Dynamite Society (hereafter referred to as "BDDS"), I'm sure glad to be in Madison. Of course, local music lovers have supported the BDDS philosophy and performances with unbridled enthusiasm since that first concert in [...]
