You may have missed it, but no one would blame if you did because you're not alone. In March, legendary indie hip-hop group Cannibal Ox announced they were making a comeback in a big way, launch... Continue reading "Cannibal Ox Is Back, But Is Anybody Listening?" >

In February 2010, El-P announced that he was stepping down from his position as the head of Definitive Jux, the label he spawned with Amaechi Uzoigwe back in 1999. It should go without saying that things were vastly different back then, though they certainly weren't any easier. El and Amaechi know that full well, because right from the jump they had to stretch out their label's name from Def Jux to Definitive Jux following legal pressure from Def Jam. Additionally, they watched as some of their contemporaries, most notably Fondle 'Em Records, closed up shop. But it was a [...]
There was something in the water around the turn of the millennium. This week we look back at the best independent hip-hop albums released between 2000 and 2004. The idea for this column...

While Cannibal Ox’s seminal debut, The Cold Vein, was released in 2001, Vast & Vordul are also currently in the studio recording their long-overdue sophomore LP, which will be released in 2013, as Vast states “we never broke up, but the timing is now right for a new Cannibal Ox LP. Iron Galaxy Records is about to take over.” After a successful west-coast tour run, Vast and Vordul are preparing for a east-coast run and recording new material for there forthcoming sophomore LP. Today, Cannibal Ox announces the release of a new Maxi-Single, “Gotham,” which includes three new [...]

Cannibal Ox have shared their first new music since 20012s The Cold Vein. Below System will release their new single, "Gotham (Ox City)", on April 16th via Below System. Listen to all three...
It's been 13 years since the New York indie-rap duo released their instant-classic debut album The Cold Vein , and they haven't dropped anything since. But Can Ox are back together now , and after hitting their fundraising goal on a Kickstarter campaign, they've now released their first new music since then. Their "Gotham" maxi-single has three new songs, with "Gases In Hell (Inhale)" and "Psalm 823 alongside the title track. None of them have the same paranoid edge they had when El-P was producing all their music, but all of them harken back to that bent, frantic [...]

Last December, indie-rap legends Cannibal Ox resurfaced for their first show in seven years, performing at Brooklyn's Knitting Factory. At the time, the Harlem duo of Vast Aire and Vordul Mega didn't mention any solid plans for new music, but this year's a whole different story. On April 16th, following to a successful Kickstarter run, they'll release their first piece of new material in 13 years (!) in the form of the maxi-single "Gotham" , which also includes the tracks "Gases in Hell (Inhale)" and "Psalm 823. Produced by Bill [...]

The news of Cannibal Ox 's reunion seemed to come and go without much impact. They launched a Kickstarter with the goal of raising $30,000 to fund a new album and only got $5,439 from 132 people, held a live reunion show that was pretty disappointing , and the new music has been... well, it doesn't feel like the first time you listened to The Cold Vein , which is probably an unfair thing to say but it's impossible not to think. BUT fear no more, because the duo now has some new [...]

Were you one of the many hip-hop heads excited to learn that Cannibal Ox had reunited for a tour and, even better, a new album ? Well, then, you might be a prime candidate to make sure the follow-up to The Cold Vein can actually happen. The gritty Harlem duo just launched a Kickstarter with the goal of raising $30,000 by March 22. Their hope is to use the funds to pay for the creation of the album, subsequent music videos, and everything else that goes into properly releasing the LP. One half of [...]

Harlem underground hip hop duo Cannibal Ox made their live return this year at Knitting Factory Brooklyn after a long hiatus, and once again promised they'd finally release a followup to their 2001 debut, which has been delayed multiple times. Now, Can Ox member Vast Aire has taken it one step further and launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for their new record and Iron Galaxy Clik Records, the label that the duo plan to launch and release the new album on. The Kickstarter page reads: Cannibal Ox is [...]

A line that will forever stick with me is, "I'm Vast Aire Kramer, top billin'." As I played my custom skate parks (because mine were better than the game designers') on Tony Hawk's Underground , Mr. Lif's "Phantom", Deltron 3030's "Positive Contact", Quasimoto's "Low Class Conspiracy", Living Legends' "War Games" and of course Cannibal Ox's "Iron Galaxy" were on an endless loop. This was my first introduction to true underground hip-hop back in 2003 at age 15. This is where an entire quest of discovering hip-hop spawned. Vast Aire's verse on "Iron Galaxy" was so strong, it converted a [...]

Stereogum I should have seen the warning signs from the jump: duo with one classic album and a decade of rumors and unfruitful false starts on a follow-up reunite for a show with sketchy promotion and no sign of the high-profile cosigns that made them famous in the first place. I would have been more angry about last night's Cannibal Ox show if it wasn't so depressing. Read More... [...]

Last month, Cannibal Ox confirmed that they'd finally be following up 2001's The Cold Vein , an album widely regarded as an underground hip-hop classic . The reunion show went down last night at The Knitting Factory in New York City, and we went into it with a mixture of uncertainty and excitement. We left with one thing: disappointment. As much as it pains us to say, the Cannibal Ox reunion show was one of the worst concerts we've been to this year. By Jon Tanners and Confusion [...]

Back in 2001 Harlem duo, Cannibal Ox (rappers Vast Aire and Vordul Mega ) released their sonically sprawling debut LP, The Cold Vein . Listening to it now the album still has a really futuristic sound and El-P 's production is sublime. It remains one of the best things Def Jux have released. Every now and again I wondered what had happened to the duo [...]
