Knew I'd have to post this joint eventually. Can Ox. From The Cold Vein. This album used to be an every day listen for me. It's not your every day hip-hop with catchy choruses or that boom-bap sound but if you get it, I promise it'll blow your mind. El-P made all the beats on some next-level, spaced out, futuristic shit. Vast-Aire and Vordul Mega are the emcees and as far as flows go, I would say they are almost completely opposites. They compliment each other perfectly. Vast-Aire got most of the shine, but I always [...]

I posted a few these cats' tracks a couple days ago and I've received positive feedback towards them. Their latest song off The Box features Cannibal Ox's Vast Aire in the "Beatrix." GZA also happens to be featured in the album, I'll put his track up once it leaks.
The proposed Cannibal Ox reunion appears to be marching onwards, as the latest Vordul Mega solo release features 2 new tracks with fellow CanOx MC Vast Aire (who shared the favour on his own album earlier this year) trying to recapture the classic atmosphere of The Cold Vein. The full album drops on the 19th August but I've got a MP3 of "AK47", one of the reunion tracks, as a sample to tide you over. Although not produced by El-P (who incidentally does feature elsewhere on the record), it shares the same space-age [...]

"Money is cool, I'm only human But they use it as a tool to make the workers feel excluded Like the shinier the jewel the more exclusive the troop is Bullets don't take bribes stupid, they shoot shit" -Aesop Rock It's really too bad popular hip hop is filled with people like Lil Wayne, Soulja Boy, Flo Rida, and G-Unit. If only people would wake up and see how much more talented and interesting some of this underground hip hop is, the world might be just that much [...]

from roughly 1994 until 2000, hip hop was completely dead to me. it wasn't until i came across aesop rock's float and the deltron 3030 record that my interest in the genre began to flourish for a possible round two, round one being from '88 - '94. during the younger days of hip hop, i fully immersed myself into the music and it made a big impact on my later listening habits. but i got truly tired of the inconsistency. i could never depend on an artist/crew to put out two or three succesive records of good to [...]

I would argue that Cannibal Ox is the most underrated group in hip hop. Ever. The harlem-based duo released only one full-length LP (The Cold Vein) but I mean that's all they need to hold their place in rap history. The incredible instrumentals that DJ El-P basically paints are upheld by the prolific lyrics and smooth flows of MCs Vast Aire and Vordul Mega. It basically sounds like you're in a crowd of people marching into some huge machine of sound and Aire and Mega are telling you exactly what's wrong with the everything around [...]

As you may have noticed, Passion of the Weiss, East Coast President, Joey "Straight Bangin' Litman" and I have put out a call to arms for bloggers to name their 25 Favorite Hip-Hop albums of all-time. Of course, its a sorta' pointless proposition, but so is blogging, so we figured why not combine the two and see what sort of consensus we can get. Anyhow, ballots are already trickling in, if you're interested in submitting one, send an e-mail to me at passionweiss@gmail.com or straightbangin@gmail.com. Expect a full list to simultaneously be broadcast on [...]

It seems Def Jux is a little jealous of Stones Throw Records collaborations with animated panic-spreading geniuses Adult Swim so they decided to get on the free mixtape action too. It's called Definitive Swim and features tracks from Def Jukies Aesop Rock, Cage, Mr. Lif, Rob Sonic, El-P amongst others. You can download the album as a zip with the artwork and all . I know the Aesop and El-P tracks are new as they're from their forthcoming album. Before you get it though, have a look at [...]

* Cannibal Ox : Iron Galaxy (7.0 mb) | The F-Word (8.0 mb) | Pigeon (7.5 mb) From The Cold Vein : Definitive Jux : DJX07-2 With a claustrophobic, dystopian soundscape by El-P and two amazing MCs, Vordul Mega and Vast Aire, Cannibal Ox burst onto the scene in 2001 and blew hip-hop heads all over the place. The Cold Vein is an absolutely incredible album that, five years down the road, remains [...]

fun show last night at sob's , good to see the nolej crew out in force and what not. the real highlight of the night, though, was that i got to hang out in a real backstage dressing room complete with leather couches and an empty mini fridge. i kinda had no business being there. the scene was further accented by a whole bunch of kanye west tour posters on the walls and a bunch of pratt kids (?) lounging around. kanye west feat. cam'ron [...]
